Just... Make It Yourself! by real_flamingicecubegames

A game developer is really tired. So tired he gives the player the power to complete the game.

//WARNING: This game contains: Profanity, Profanity and lots of fucking profanity.

Just... Make It Yourself! is a game where you create levels using randomized chunks. Once you are finished with placing the chunks, you gain control of the player. You must then lead the player to the goal. Over the course of many levels, more hazards will be introduced. You also have a time limit. A limit that is reduced every few levels.

You have objects like the time crate, which will give the player an additional 5 seconds to finish the level, or the coin, which gives the player 100 points. Once you run out of lives, you will be scored.

I like the polish and the voice sfx are pretty funny. Gameplay-wise, it seems a bit too easy to just build a flat surface leading to the goal?

This is a really solid game! In pretty much every game jam there is always at least one "you make the game" games, but the way that the game makes you use the preset chunks makes for an interesting gameplay loop. One annoying thing is that while the tutorial is kinda funny, it is still just a bunch of text, and it would be better to teach the player while they play. Also there doesn't seem to be any way to restart a level once you start it.

@orangeoceans Thanks for playing. Yeah, honestly I should have made the difficulty increase faster. Later on in the game, there are obstacles that interact with each-other in ways that make you divert. Introducing those obstacles faster would have probably improved the pacing.

@rorybabory Thank you for the feedback and for playing. I agree about the tutorial. I should've made a section where the voicelines were playing over gameplay, giving the player a visual and letting them feel the game before jumping in.

However, I feel letting the player restart a level would let them just get away with mistakes too much. I feel like in games, the player needs those game-overs to reinforce what they have done wrong.

Not saying restarts are wrong though. Maybe i'll make an option for that at some point.

@real-flamingicecubegames Oh that sounds cool, I'll give it another try then!

Fun game! I enjoyed the gameplay quite a bit, it was fun building levels. I think I would have liked restarts too, or the option to reroll the piece you were randomly given.

I only got 6750, some bad luck with RNG and just me being clumsy. This was a really cool concept, and well executed; the voice acting took it to the next level. I think the tutorial was fine, especially as it also served as "world building" and had humor.
If there's one addition I'd appreciate it's a "suicide" button as I often built too soon and doomed the level, but I still had to finish building it and spawn and wait/fall down to try again.

@nick-baggett Thanks for playing. Rerolling the piece could actually be a pretty cool mechanic, i'll have to keep that in mind for later.

@fredspipa Thank you for the feedback. And thank you for the compliment on the voice acting. That is one aspect I was really proud of. However, there is a suicide button. It is said in the tutorial that pressing J or Left Shift would kill you. Perhaps it wasn't clear enough? I do think I should make that button work while building a level though, just so you don't have to finish all of the creation before giving up.

@frankdev Thanks for playing. Glad you liked the voice stuff, I really liked working on it.

Great make! This game would really have benefited of music. But the time is limited... Not bad, excellent jam game and might even have some potential for further development

@unbugged Thank you for playing. Yeah... music is still my nemesis. I actually have some ideas for a potential post jam version.

Pretty funny, and fun to play! Neat little challenge and idea of creating the level with those random tiles and having to play through it. Comes with a little bit of strategy! Voices were pretty funny, but the reverb was a little much.

@vegeo Thanks for playing. It's funny, when I was making the game I thought the reverb was great, but after release I realized after playing the game for a while, that the reverb gets pretty annoying. I think i'll add a mute button or make a way to skip the audio sections in the future.

Fun to play though a little slow to get started, I was almost about to stop playing assuming I had seen it all when the death cubes and fire lines appeared, Glad I stuck with it.

This was a cool concept. I felt like it was a bit too easy to just build a relatively flat path to the end, though.

@happygamer500 Thanks for playing. As I have stated before, I feel like I introduced obstacles too late into the game. It seems like people get bored before they even need to start moving blocks more intentionally. I will keep this in mind for an updated version.

@spider-the-second Thanks for playing. Yeah, that was my biggest mistake was the pacing. I regret making those obstacles appear as late as they did.

I really like the concept of this game. I remember there was a multiplayer game in which each player would have to build the level in order to either trick the other players or get to the finish (forgot the name). A lot of potential for future development . Good entry!

@baubau Thank you for playing. I think that game was Ultimate Chicken Horse? That was an inspiration, but I was mainly thinking of No More Heroes and WarioWare at the time (I know, weird combination). Thanks for the kind words.

Alright I came back to the game after you said there were obstacles. Yeah, they should have been in there round two or three. I really like the win/fail screens. I think that the platforming could have been a bit less mobile so that there was more strategy to placing blocks, and speeding up the game to it doesn't take 20 rounds to feel rushed. Overall definitely a good game. I might play again at higher difficulty later.
