You are scientist who has been studying rifts in reality for sometime. You never thought it could get this bad...

Shot in the Dark is an action top down shooter where you are limited to your small slice of reality. Many demons lurk beyond what is real and have a thirst to terminate you. They blast you with comic energy from the shadows. You cannot see what isn't real but luckily in your research you developed a radar that detects such movements beyond what's real. You have to use what little information you have to battle these unseen threats. While using your radar you are unable to move or shoot.

How To Play:

Enemies are invisible but orbiting the player in circles, Use the Radar(Hold Right Click) to see how enemies are moving to try and figure out where they are.

  • WASD for movement
  • Mouse aims your rifle
  • Left click fires
  • Holding right click down is your radar, which pings your enemies' positions twice.

So fancy, but I don't know how to play! I can view some lighting in the dark but I just don't know what to do.

Nice atmosphere and unique idea. I would love some indicator if shooting a detected monster actually killed it - or some score text that would tell me that. Btw loved the death screenspace effect (and the effect on the text too!)

@wolkp Hey thanks for the nice words! We were heavily debating having some particles spawn on kill, but ultimately decided to have the screen and score stretch as well as a sound. (Saw your game posts and love your game so far, good luck with the jam!)

This game is awesome! I love the vibes and it fits the theme SO well. I feel so cramped in my little box as I dodge the lasers. I also LOVE the effect when you die. The way the letters in "Existence Terminated" appear looks so cool. I'd love to figure out how to do that

One suggestion I have would be to make a scoring system. This would allow you to compete against friends for a high score :p

Also! I see you made this in Godot! How long have you been using Godot? I just started learning it a couple weeks ago and I'm surprised at how easy it is to pick up. Personally, I love it so far and I can't wait to make more games in it!

Pretty awesome, I played it a 4 or 5 times to try to master the mechanic (i got it on the first playthrough but it took me a couple of tries to feel comfortable with it). It's a clever concept and a perfect way to represent the theme, congrats!

Very intense game. Being forced to split your attention between the the lasers and where the creature is at is a pretty neat idea.

The concept of radar is so cool!Just suit the theme and save bunch of resources I've made a shoot'em up also and I wish to have your laser gun in my game haha :-D

This was wonderful, felt like a badass target leading successfully on almost every shot, then things got out of hand when I missed one of them... very nice art, and sound design. Loved it!

This is a really fun game, didn't think I would like it very much but when I tried it, I had a blast and couldn't stop playing.

Exactly 5000 was my highest score.

Things started to really degrade quite quickly for me when there were lots of enemies, it was hard to keep track of all of them. Sounds were very satisfying too. Music was awesome and it really started to feel like shit was going down whenever it started playing.

The one thing I would change though is to have a little more hit feedback than the score counter increasing. It would be really nice to be able to see the enemy flash as they die real quick when you hit them with your laser thing. Awesome game, simple concept, perfect for a jam, great job!

This game snowballs really hard on you when you miss a shot. I think you have to really get into the feel of the enemy movements to have a chance. I figured them out after like two tries and its pretty fun when you get the hang of it. I'm not the biggest fan of the requirement to have to completely stop moving to use the radar though. Maybe just halfing the move speed while doing would be fine. Because in the later stages and when you miss one (or a few) enemies, attacks come from all sides and you can only dodge or die and cant stop to use the radar.

For me it's quite easy to get to 3000ish and then it gets really hard with the new stationary enemies.

A bit of music would have been nice, but i like the subtle sounds that every action causes.

I really like the artdirection with the simple style that works nicely with the environment/setting.

Really enjoyed playing it. Even tho there is nothing much to see, the radar stars were a perfect indicator where they are and which direction they were moving, the sound and music was spot on. The atmosphere was also great, everytime there was nothing on my radar for like 3 times is was afraid ill get jumped from behind!
I love how you get more ammo and enemies the more you play, because your skill is also rising with the time.
Can't stop playing it!
(Score 20.500 so far)

I only made 3800, once I understood that the enemies were spinning in orbit and that the radar was going to ping it 2 times, it became really fun to play! (Sorry, I hadn't read the description beforehand :'))

@pierre-marie Thanks! One thing I wish we made was a tutorial, since it's a bit confusing without reading the description or the how to play section. But once you get the mechanic of the radar I think it's a blast! Thanks for the feedback!

I just had doubts about knowing when I destroy a monster

Neat! I unfortunately didn't get to see any of the enemies that come into your area; maybe I just wasn't good enough to last very long? Once you figure out how to hit the enemies, it's really neat, though there could be more confirmation you hit something. Also, I feel like the two radar pings could be spaced out a bit more, giving you a little more time to react and get ready to shoot. Holding the radar button is a bit annoying, and I think it could just as easily be one click, with a cooldown for using it. This way you can focus on dodging more than holding the radar button. Overall, a really great game, very unique and an interesting take on the theme.

I love the concept and the art. Everything is stylistic and really snappy. This might change the mood of the game but seeing a rough silhouette when you shoot a monster would be really solid visual feedback. Wouldn't even have to be an actual monster, just some sort of shape indicating you hit it. I wish the music came on a little sooner because it was that good. Great job! Could expand this out into a bigger project!

A very clever game in design. Although the black scene saves resources, it does not weaken the artistic effect. On the contrary, it fits the theme in the darkness, making people exciting to play. Interesting experience

Oh my GOD that was so terrifying and so much fun. Gameplay felt super clean and fair while staying far from easy. Constantly kept me on my toes even after I got the hang of it. Extremely well done!

Once I figured out I had to lead my shots based on the radar pings this game went from a 2 to a 10. Music absolutely slams, gameplay was a decent challenge, and dodging enemy attacks and landing hits on enemies was INCREDIBLY satisfying. Excellent work! Thanks for bringing it to the stream!

cool game! spot on with the theme. the radar is a nice mechanic, i like how you can't move or shoot when using it. Adds a nice bit of challenge. Artwork is a perfect fit and makes everything clear. Well done!

The combination of darkness and limit space theme is quite good, although I was a bit confused when I first started playing without getting my head around it, but I guess it's only a matter of time, good job!

A very original concept, maybe it lacks some feedbacks, some score system or anything that make you feel like you are making progress and you are getting better at the game.

This game is magnificent. The sounds are perfect and the graphics are very well adjusted. This is more of a lesson on how to make a very short game in a demo. I'm learning a lot in this jam. I really die after a while, but at the same time I can survive for a while, then it gets a little repetitive. But I know that if they had more time, more things would be implemented. I really liked. Totally on topic

When I play this game, I feel the concept of the game, it is the soul of the game, can attract my interest and keep them interactive, I mean is really a great idea, I actually learn something form this game.

A good concept can make a game stand out. In addition, the visuals and music of the game also had a significant impact on my experience.

The visual effects of the game screen may not be so delicate but it is also characteristic enough(I love It!!), and the harmony of the music combined with the atmosphere of the game makes the whole experience more pleasant.

In addition, the difficulty and balance of the game are also key elements of the quality of the game, they can ensure that the game is challenging but not too difficult.

All in all, I think it’s a great little game that has the concept, the visuals, the music and the gameplay to keep players interested and engaged.

This is a measure of the quality of a small game, and this game gives me a lot of fun.

If you like my reviews, check out my game too! Absolutely stunning! Thank you!!

This game is incredibly captivating. It manages to create a sense of panic and excitement within the confines of a limited space, which is both creative and clever. I found myself completely immersed in it for a long time, and every time I died, I couldn't help but restart and try again. It's truly addictive. I invite you to come and experience our game as well; I think you'll really enjoy it.
