Phone Booth Boxing by exofrenon

[raw]
made by exofrenon for Ludum Dare 54 (JAM)

Phone Booth Boxing (PBB) is about boxing. Inside a phone booth. It is a real thing, google it. video.

Starring the Box Pusher, the protagonist of my last box-related smash hit in Ludum Dare, PBB is a turn-based fighting game where movement is not allowed due to the limited space inside the phone booth. Pretty much both fighters are standing in the same spot and they punch each other until one phases out. You can play against the CPU in the World Cup mode in a series of fights to become the World Champion, or 1v1 against a human player on the same keyboard (see controls at the bottom)

A turn-based fighting game might be a first, but it's essentially a glorified Rock-Paper-Scissors game of 3 options: Light Punch, Heavy Punch, Blocking. Just like any other AAA game in the past decade, there is also a stamina meter. And low and high attacks. It gets complicated, but there is an in-game tutorial. If you still didn't get it even after the tutorial, look at the instructions below. Know what, just look at them before you start playing just to make sure you get it.

Instructions

  • You are always the character on the left side (the up-and-coming boxing star, The Box Pusher)
  • It is a turn-based game. At each turn, there is timer bar at the middle of the screen that shows you how much time you have to press a button (around 2 seconds). After the bar is depleted, both players will act simultaneously
  • You have 6 options (Low/High Light Punch, Low/High Heavy Punch, Low/High Block) + 1 (staying idle).
    • Light Punch defeats Heavy Punch (cost: 1 stamina point)
    • Heavy Punch defeats Block (cost: 2 stamina points)
    • Block defeats Light Punch (cost: 0 stamina points)
    • Idle leaves you open for a possible attack but replenishes 2 stamina points.
  • The above ordering is used only the actions of the two players are both on the same height (both Low or both High). But if they are at a different height, the ordering is irrelevant, both players will be hit.
  • Running out of stamina puts you in a stun mode and you are unable to act until the next turn.

Player 1 Controls: - Block (High / Low): Up arrow / Down Arrow - Light Punch (High / Low): I / K - Heavy Punch (High / Low): O / L - Idle: Left arrow (or do nothing)

Player 2 Controls: - Block (High / Low): W / S - Light Punch (High / Low): R / F - Heavy Punch (High / Low): T / G - Idle: A (or do nothing)

Final notes

At the time of submission I didn't have time to finish the graphics on time (same sprite for every opponent and that ugly looking image of the Big Ben drawn 5 minutes before the deadline). Also there are no sounds. I will see if I can patch in something quick in a following update.

Tools Used: - Engine: Unity - Pixel art: Aseprite - Sound BFXR / SFXR

All assets were created by me. You might notice some strong similarities in the player's sprite with a certain historical fighting game. I won't deny it, I did use it as a reference, but the end result is wholly original.

Enjoy.

Update 1 (Morning of October 3rd): Added the windows build. Hopefully by the end of the day I will add the HTML5 embedded version or the itch.io link.

Update 2 (Midnight of October 3rd): Added an HTML5 version, fixed the ugly background graphics and added unique sprites for each fighter, SFX for punches and a few bug fixes. You can see the revamped graphics below

Update 3 (October 4th): Some more bug fixing when spamming buttons and getting stuck on the winning screen.

I'm honest. I didn't get it. It was unclear who I was and I hadn't kazillion years to concentrate on the keys. But! I must say this game is the best fit on the theme "limited space" so far I've encountered. Also, the idea behind it is so freakingly awesome and unique, that trying out this game left a smile on my face

@unbugged Thanks for the feedback! You are always the guy on the left side. I will try to make the instructions a little bit clearer.

Super cool game, It's fit perfectly with the theme and the rock-paper-scissors mecanic is a good idea, plus the graphics are super clean, overall, I've trully enjoyed it !

I think I won the world cup thanks to a little bug (my enemy idled during the last 3 rounds). Furthermore, I've got a black screen after winning and after the tutorial (webgl version).

@donhadryel Thanks a lot, I appreciate your positive feedback! The CPU behavior is semi-random, so it might happen that it stayed idle in consecutive turns. I made some last moment changes that might have introduced the black screen bug, I will have a look later today.

Great entry. Fits the theme well, graphics are really nice.
I did have to restart the game to properly play though as the enemy just idled everyt time on the first play.

Seems very good, but the enemies never tried to punch me they just stayed idle. I'll give you good points tho cause I see the greatness in this

@achilnos @verttixpertti It is fine if the stay idle, the first matches are meant to be easy and to get harder the more you progress (in the first tutorial they are specifically programmed to stay idle).

Really fun game, we played it only on pvp and it was really good. At first we mostly spammed stuff without knowing what it will do but as soon as we got it, it was all mind game.

I think a small sheet reminding of the buttons could be usefull when we play as on a french keyboard the pattern was not obvious at all! Nice graphics and art overall

Great entry !

Great idea and I love the fact that there is 2-players mode! A bit of bugs: the sounds are too loud in the web version and World Cup opponents always idled. It's a game jam though, so no big deal. Good entry!

@magic-mike Thanks! it is good to know that someone tried the 1v1 mode and enjoyed it since I think this is the best way to play the game. I am also happy to know that you played it long enough to understand it ;).

@antarian @achilnos @verttixpertti Oh sh**t, you were right, they are really only idle-ing. I broke it in my previous hotfix. I will fix it so that they behave normally cause this is a huge bug.

It's a unique idea that fits the theme very well. I only got a chance to play the world cup, but I can definitely see the potential for mindgames/mixups in pvp. I'd recommend playing a sound or visual effect when the player presses a button, so that the input feels impactful.

@djtequila It is subtle, but when you press a button the player's animation stops jumping (it freezes).

Interesting idea for a game and fits the theme well. I like the rock, paper, scissors style gameplay. I think the timer could be a little shorter to keep it moving and more exciting.

Beautiful sprite work. I enjoyed beating the world cup and messing around. I found heavy punches to be quite a dominant strategy, they seemed a little too powerful? Though getting those last few hits with a safer light punch made sense. Would like to see this developed further, the world needs more turn based fighting games!

As a fan of boxing I liked this game. This game is the closest to the theme that I've come across, so far. Overall, quite impressive for one person.

great use of the theme, since everyone else gave good comments i think ill focus on the audio and say i tihnk having music and more sound effects would have def impacted the mood and fun of the game. great job nonetheless!

@agent-peterson I totally agree, the thing is that my initial plan was to enter the Compo and I really have 0 musical knowledge to make anything that resembles music. In the end I couldn't make it on time and I entered the Jam instead, only for the +1 day, but I still wanted to make everything on my own. Make in a few years down the line I will learn music and add it to my games...

I like this game a lot. I think it was well executed. Some more sfx sounds would have been cool.

Really great game - I loved the theme (as well as learning a little something new). I think overall great execution on a fascinating idea. You abslutely nailed theme, graphics, and sound effects - amazing work in such short a time! The one piece I would recommend is I felt like the pacing didn't quite match the theme - I may have not gotten high enough in the Word Cup, but I'd recommend a more frantic, intense pace. I feel like the idea is really consistent with button mashing madness as you scramble to fight inside such a small space. That's just opinion though - overall you did absolutely amazing work!

I gotta admit, this is the best cover I've seen for the jam overall. The graphics are incredible! The game overall could be faster paced and have the enemy give some inkling to what they'll be doing next.

Though I have been beaten by the "boss" of the tutorial for 5 times, I still believe this game to be a really cool one!

I think the controls could have been a little more streamlined which would have made the fighting faster and more engaging, however the style and concept is awesome and the character designs are great.

Loved it, but where was the backgroung music? This rock paper scissors with two levels, high and low, was fun to play! Theme of "limited space" is kinda there, but... It doesn't affect your gameplay in any way, so few minus points from that (characters could be beating each other in any environment to be real). Graphics and mood are through the roof! Amazing game, but without the music I can't feel like a proper bully! Cheers!

@septimor I wish I could have music, but this was a solo entry mate, I can't do everything on my own in a weekend :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
