Phone Booth Boxing by exofrenon
Phone Booth Boxing (PBB) is about boxing. Inside a phone booth. It is a real thing, google it. video.
Starring the Box Pusher, the protagonist of my last box-related smash hit in Ludum Dare, PBB is a turn-based fighting game where movement is not allowed due to the limited space inside the phone booth. Pretty much both fighters are standing in the same spot and they punch each other until one phases out. You can play against the CPU in the World Cup mode in a series of fights to become the World Champion, or 1v1 against a human player on the same keyboard (see controls at the bottom)
A turn-based fighting game might be a first, but it's essentially a glorified Rock-Paper-Scissors game of 3 options: Light Punch, Heavy Punch, Blocking. Just like any other AAA game in the past decade, there is also a stamina meter. And low and high attacks. It gets complicated, but there is an in-game tutorial. If you still didn't get it even after the tutorial, look at the instructions below. Know what, just look at them before you start playing just to make sure you get it.
Instructions
- You are always the character on the left side (the up-and-coming boxing star, The Box Pusher)
- It is a turn-based game. At each turn, there is timer bar at the middle of the screen that shows you how much time you have to press a button (around 2 seconds). After the bar is depleted, both players will act simultaneously
- You have 6 options (Low/High Light Punch, Low/High Heavy Punch, Low/High Block) + 1 (staying idle).
- Light Punch defeats Heavy Punch (cost: 1 stamina point)
- Heavy Punch defeats Block (cost: 2 stamina points)
- Block defeats Light Punch (cost: 0 stamina points)
- Idle leaves you open for a possible attack but replenishes 2 stamina points.
- The above ordering is used only the actions of the two players are both on the same height (both Low or both High). But if they are at a different height, the ordering is irrelevant, both players will be hit.
- Running out of stamina puts you in a stun mode and you are unable to act until the next turn.
Player 1 Controls: - Block (High / Low): Up arrow / Down Arrow - Light Punch (High / Low): I / K - Heavy Punch (High / Low): O / L - Idle: Left arrow (or do nothing)
Player 2 Controls: - Block (High / Low): W / S - Light Punch (High / Low): R / F - Heavy Punch (High / Low): T / G - Idle: A (or do nothing)
Final notes
At the time of submission I didn't have time to finish the graphics on time (same sprite for every opponent and that ugly looking image of the Big Ben drawn 5 minutes before the deadline). Also there are no sounds. I will see if I can patch in something quick in a following update.
Tools Used: - Engine: Unity - Pixel art: Aseprite - Sound BFXR / SFXR
All assets were created by me. You might notice some strong similarities in the player's sprite with a certain historical fighting game. I won't deny it, I did use it as a reference, but the end result is wholly original.
Enjoy.

Update 1 (Morning of October 3rd): Added the windows build. Hopefully by the end of the day I will add the HTML5 embedded version or the itch.io link.
Update 2 (Midnight of October 3rd): Added an HTML5 version, fixed the ugly background graphics and added unique sprites for each fighter, SFX for punches and a few bug fixes. You can see the revamped graphics below
Update 3 (October 4th): Some more bug fixing when spamming buttons and getting stuck on the winning screen.

I think I won the world cup thanks to a little bug (my enemy idled during the last 3 rounds). Furthermore, I've got a black screen after winning and after the tutorial (webgl version).
I did have to restart the game to properly play though as the enemy just idled everyt time on the first play.
I think a small sheet reminding of the buttons could be usefull when we play as on a french keyboard the pattern was not obvious at all! Nice graphics and art overall
Great entry !
