I felt like there wasn't much of a difficulty curve with the randomness - my first round I only ever got one or two fireballs on the screen at once, but after that I had up to four I think. I also found out the hitbox behind the player extends far beyond the sprite, so you can be standing your own width away from a fireball and still die. A 3 lives health system might make the game feel more fair.
