The Dodge Invoker by pauljs

[raw]
made by pauljs for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

The Dodge Invoker is a precision platformer (think Getting Over It or Jump King). It's hard, it might not be for you, it's a "rage game".

You can Jump, Double Jump or even Dash but each time you do, demons will be invoked! Those evil beings want to make you fall!

The game is best played with an Xbox controller but can also be played with a keyboard.

Controls: Keyboard: Arrow (move) Space bar (jump) Ctrl (Dash) F for fullscreen

Xbox controller: Joystick (move) A (jump) X (Dash) Select to restart

We made neither sound nor music (free assets).

Post Jam Update: - Added leaderboard, timer and meter counter - Added visual when creating demons - Make tutorial for dash better - Shorten slightly dash timer

very innovative gameplay! loved the "rage game" aspect where you have to be strategic with your choices, or else risk having to deal with more difficult things later on in the game. The double jumping but with increased risk was an excellent idea! I would have loved if the little slug character had a bit more animation on his lil walks and jumps, but it's such a short timeline its not really doable in that length of time. All in all, great work and super fun game!

As a fan of this type of platformers - I used to speedrun getting over it - I have to admit that your game is impressive. It plays very similarly to a game called Erased, except that Erased is in 3D. The game is almost perfect for speedrunning, but there are some random factors in it - for example, the spawn position of summoned demons.

Super fun entry, very frustrating but in a good way! Had a lot of fun learning the right timings of jumping and not spamming so as not to mess myself up. Awesome work!

This is one of those games for whom the word "Fun" just doesn't do justice. Is it fun? I don't know, but it's compelling as hell! The mood is intense and gives me a sense of mild claustrophobia. Certainly a great jam entry!

Awesome game submission!

This game was definitely challenging for me but it was super rewarding each time I would make it to a new checkpoint.

Also thought that the art style and music paired really well together giving the game a very ominous feel.

Good work!

This was fun! I almost didn't play much of it. But the more I played and the more rage I endured. The more I wanted to finish the game so that all my rage would mean something.

I missed an indicator for the dash cooldown but it was quite enjoyable.

Not a huge fan of rage games but I gave this a go. The atmosphere is great, love the grainy grayscale filter. As far as the mechanic goes I like the idea. And once I connected the pentagrams to the location of the demon spawn things made more sense and I could be more tactical. That said I think there are a few bugs like where you enter a sliding state when diagonal to a slope. Probably not the intended method of rage inducement.

@mactinite Thank you for your feedback! Red slopes are supposed to make you fall whenever you go on them (whatever the way), so it was intended but it's maybe not clear enough. And their might be some bugs we missed out on!

I like it much more than getting over it thats for sure!
At first you think the pentagrams dont do anything but in the heat of things those stray bullets make the difference sometimes.

Pretty solid game, a bit rage-y for my taste, but fun altogether!!
Good Work!

I couldn't climb the first staircase.
It might be worth lowering the difficulty level.
The style of the game is amazing. It reminded me of Limbo in some way.
Like!

Love the art as some said it really remind to Limbo, also the in game tutorial is very effective as information comes exactly when you need it without overwhelming the player.

The jump feels very good, the post processing effect is very nice and the mechanics are super nice as it makes you want to really limit the times that you double jump or do something that summons another enemy.

Great job overall, one of the best entries I played for now :)

I made it quite far several times, and each time I got knocked back down, it was just more rage-motivation to keep going higher!

It wasn't immediately obvious that the orbiting pentagrams were doing something - I think something small like flashing a different color when they shoot a projectile would have helped it read better.

Overall I really enjoyed playing this game, good work!

Love the atmosphere by colors and music. Awesome mechanic, where you need to pay the "price" for each jump and dash. Difficulty is hard, really hard (obvious for rage game), I didn't finished it. Great entry, I had much fun with it

Okay, so the Ludum Version must be bugged because I didn't had the demons, so I didn't understand it at first. Seeing the itch version had me reconsider the game difficulty ! Good idea, web versions are a bit small !

I like the visual style and atmosphere of the game, and fair warning it's not gonna be easy ;D

I tried a bit but my patience resource is scarce. Couldn't really avoid green thingies that turn me into a ball, and kept rolling down x)

However, I like what you did, that's a great concept ^-^

Not my game... But I have watched a bunch of people playing it an I must say the game does everything it does well! The level design is on point! With a bit of a graphical overhaul this could really be something I could see people buying on steam. Really well done!

I really enjoyed this, though I was not very good at it! ha!
Great work, though, it had many interesting mechanics, I was
not very good at percision jumping!
At first I didn't like the art style, but as I played I began to
appreciate the vibe and actually the art style was perfect!
All round great work!
