The Alumnus Of Darkness by mremmele

[raw]
made by mremmele for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Young Necromancer starts his journey in a godforsaken place, where military personnel hide in every nook and cranny and will try to take him down. Help him gather an army of undead and clear the level from governmental disease!

Tips:

  1. The first corpse on your way will give you a head start. Resurrect him and meet your first enemy.
  2. Try to avoid archers on platforms! Deploy your fighters closer to them, using “Q”. Don’t forget to use “Q” whenever you have the need to lift your subordinates closer to the enemy.
  3. If you lose all your fighters, press “E” to resurrect the last fallen undead back to you. You can only do it when you have no allies left.
  4. You can have three allies simultaneously.

Updates:

I've recently updated the game. Nothing special, no new features or content. I've just adjusted the hitboxes a bit, moved the position of the first archer, and added mobile controls for the game, so now you can play on your phone. I've included an additional link at the end of the list since all these changes were made after the deadline.

Dev Notes:

We had a team consisting of one developer (myself, Mikhail) and one painter (my wife, Tatiana). We used my own game editor, Remiz (the name is a work in progress, not happy with it right now) and the editor for this game engine. No documentation included, bear with me, it’s a long process.

We used Pixquare to draw on iPad with a pencil. Overall, the game was built on Javascript + WebGL, with the help of three.js and my own code.

I love the art style! Wasn't able to hear any audio, but the use of revived ghosts is an awesome idea.

I suck at this game xD I wish there was a bit more I could do to survive or influence the fight, but I appreciate the pure summoning vibe. Movement feels great, the game looks beautiful and I am really impressed by this being done in a custom game editor. I think I'm just a bit too tired after this weekend, to make it far in the level :D

Those archers are no joke! I really love the artstyle! And that it is made in your own engine is super impressive. It felt like that the hitboxes were a little bit to big I felt like I got hit even when standing behind my guys. And I feel like the player could have some more hp as its super punishing at the moment.

@vi6six yeah I haven't added any audio for this game, it is checked out from categories. Unfortunately we don't know how to make sounds for now :)

@andreas-decker Don't worry it took me some time to deal with this first archer even if it's my game haha :)

@the-lame-brain thank you! Yeah they are the pain in the ass

@domenixius Thank you for this notice, I simply forgot to adjust hitboxes. Will look into it :)

cool drawing, pretty intrepid mechanics, especially with its own engine.

What a well-polished game! It's artistically delightful and very fun to play. Although I must admit, I find it quite challenging - a common issue I encounter in my own games, where I'm not sure how difficult they actually are, and they seem easier to me. Otherwise, the game is very entertaining. The mechanics of resurrecting units, each with different abilities, whether attacking normally, with spears, or with arrows, are fantastic. All of this set in a visually stunning environment that creates a wonderful mood. My sincerest congratulations on the game!

I was having a really hard time with the archers and the hits seemed to splash through my summoned troops. The art style and controls were very intuitive and easy to pick up. Well done. :)

Cool game! It's very impressive that the game was created on its own engine, everything is implemented quite well. The game mechanics are quite engaging, it would be great if there was more content. Great job!

Hello there : )) I beat the game. Very cute!

First off, I really respect the effort put into developing *your own* engine! Admirable. I'm also a JS dev, that's why even more from my side. Respect.

Secondly, it's a very cute-style game. It works well, is polished, looks neat. Beautiful pixel art.

Now time for the tips: the gameplay is FUN... but only *once* you get how it actually works. I tend to read instructions, but not always - I relied on the menu screen aaand `Q - Summon` was surprisingly unclear. I tried it in the beginning, nothing happened: I almost dismissed the `Q` button whatsoever and later was wondering how I should be able to proceed to kill those guys on the platforms. : )) A smaaaaall tip which could resolve this very issue, at least for my brain `Q - teleport the last resurrected` XD
It's a minor thing... but `summon` itself sounded like creating sth out of nothing, it's implicit logic to work otherwise.

Other than that, last tip - again on the point of "confusion" - it's very easy to die - some hasty people could close the game just due to that, too early - maybe have 10hp rather than 3 - give 'em more time to react. Just my 2 cents. : ))

Awesome game, besides the 2 UX things I mentioned. Full respect!!!

PS: I read you didn't know how to make audio - I am a sucker too - but you may want to check what *Sound Fonts* means / and take any MIDI-enabled software to generate some arbitrary note sequence and then just use the custom sound font to make it sound very very cool : )) ;)

Loveley artworks. The game feels good and I would like to play more, but sadly I am not able to dodge the arrow shoots good enough. The hitbox seems to be a bit large and the bowman are placed a bit frustrating. I was not able to pass the first archer without taking damage. It would be cool if you could rest at the fireplace for health and having a respawn point :)

@aweskybear, thank you for your feedback and advice!
I completely agree with you that a more detailed tutorial for this game would be good. I'll think about it and I try to create a clearer game for the next jam.
I will definitely look into the issue with sounds. I have plans to implement a sound system for my engine, and it would be helpful to have resources to simplify the audio-making process.

@a-d-chaos, my apologies. I simply forgot to adjust the hitboxes, and the archers should indeed be nerfed.
If you're still interested in playing the game, I've made some updates, fixed the hitboxes, and even added mobile controls so you can play using your phone now.
I didn't want to update the original game for LD, so I've created a new repository. Here is the link to the latest version: https://michailremmele.github.io/alumnus-of-darkness/

That is a great concept. It surely lack some audio and it was way too hard for me to play. I could figure out how to kill the archers and when I jumped on the platform I was immediately shot every time. But overall it is a great idea to summon the ones you killed
