Story

The Seraphic Academy is the leading school for the magically gifted. Among the recent graduates stands a promising young mage, you.

Fresh from the halls of Seraphic, you find yourself facing your first solo assignment from the Elders of the Academy. Tasked with a daunting mission, you must journey to the foreboding depths of The Midnight Hollow, a cavern shrouded in darkness and teeming with malevolent creatures known as the Withering Horde.

Once ordinary beings, the beasts of the abyss have fallen victim to a cursed affliction, transforming them into twisted abominations hungry for the essence of life. Your mission is clear: to cleanse the abyss of this blight by facing the seemingly endless onslaught of the Withering Horde.

Armed with your summoning prowess, you enter the mouth of the cavern, prepared to confront the darkness that lurks within...

Tutorial Page

A brief description of how to play the game (plus hints to some of the features we couldn't get done in time!)

Charts Page

Here is a useful list of all element types and how they interact with each other - you will need this page a lot...

Learn Page

Here you can learn new Affixes to modify your Minion in different way with different elemental types. You can learn a new affix by spending 100 Souls, Souls are gained by killing enemies in the Battle Scene.

Build Page

Here is where you customise your Summon Circle to give you minions with varying elemental types. Drag an affix from the left side page into one of the four available boxes on your Summon Circle, when you're done, drag the Summon Symbol from the bottom of the page into the centre to draw your Circle.

Drawing the Circle

Press the key prompts as the chalk passes over them to draw them into the Summoning Circle - the four outside symbols control the power of your Minion, missing some will give them a debuff making them less powerful in battle. The inner four symbols are where your elemental affixes are applied.

Press Space when the chalk hits the centre box and your Minion will be summoned.

Battle Scene

Your Minion will automatically attack the enemy with an elemental attack based on the affixes they have applied, the damage is calculated like so:

  • Base Damage - 10
  • Strong Type Damage + 10
  • Normal Type Damage + 5
  • Weak Type Damage + 0

  • Elemental type damage stacks so try to go for the big combos!

  • Enemy attacks also follow these rules so watch out for their types.

If your Minion successfully defeats the enemy, you will be awarded 20 Souls which you can spend unlocking new affixes to make your Minion even stronger - however if your Minion is defeated, 10 Souls will be taken from you.

At the end of a battle, you will be given the option to continue the fight with your current Minion with all of their applied affixes, edit your Summon Circle to try a new combination, or go to the Learn Page to gain some powerful new knowledge!

Note

Due to being short on time (as ever!) there where a few mechanics we couldn't get implemented, namely giving the enemies elemental affixes to add more challenge to the combat. We would have also liked to differentiate the elemental attacks from each other, but other than that it's fairly close to our original vision!

I really liked the graphics and mood - it is however a little hard to understand what's going on at times. It took a while for me to get a fight going because i didn't know how to start the "summoning". Idea is really cool tho and i very much like the style.

What a great concept!
It lacks polish and return on inputs, is too slow with a lot of grind, however I was really into it !
I was really wanting for more interactions and invocations types, meaning you have in your hands something worth of Pokemon XD

Two last notes:
-If you click on the "continue" button fast enough, you are able to launch several battles at the same time, up to a point where just clicking gives you souls ^^
-The drawing sequence should really launch when the player press the first input. It is too tedious if it launch directly.

Great work !

The mood and the idea is pretty cool. Super on theme as well. Gameplay wise I got a bit lost, I could complete a fight but i wasnt sure what was happening.

Neat concept, I also really like the graphics, tho its quite difficult to understand what to do a lot of times since there's no clear controls listed and feedback for your actions is also not very clear. Good effort tho!

So theres a small bug... Pressing the continue button fast lets you make lots of little minions. I liked the idea of quick time events to summon it!

Simple yet extraordinary, it's a fantastic game I really enjoy. Hopefully, one day, I can make one myself.

I really like the idea of summons circles (Kinda reminds me for Witch Hat Atelier)! There where a few technical problems, like the UI not being responsive so I had to change my screen to 1920x1080 and also I was able to start mutiple games at once. Also, once the battle has started, it's a bit slow. Would be nice if there where some stuff to do to not just wait until it's over.
Other than that, it is very nice !

As the other said the concept are quite nice. It was overall fun but maybe a bit to slow with a lack of feedback but anyway great job !

Neat game! I really like the sense of progression as you get a few different sigil's under your belt, battles get shorter and you get more and more currency to spend. Very satisfying. I also think your elemental charts are really well thought out, would definitely be curious to play a later build where the enemies have the planned elemental variety if you end up working on it.

One thing I would like to see more of is some responsiveness or feedback, "game feel" stuff like sound or visual effects particularly on the summoning circle drawing minigame. I found it quite hard to handle at first and missed half of the inputs... Well, that's mainly my fault but it would certainly add to the feel of it to have some kind of feedback.

Anyway good job I like what you have here and I appreciate the ambition of what you were going for.

I liked the idea! It seems that the battles can either be sped up, or allowed to be influenced in some way (for example through something similar to the Summoning Circle but during the fight).

@jo-bettaque Thanks for the feedback! In hindsight yeah, the summoning is a little unclear if you aren't the one thats programmed it! The controls on the LD page are more indepth than the tutorial in game so they might help to clear some things up :D Thanks for playing!

@mephistase Thanks for the feedback! We only implemeneted the continue, edit circle and learn buttons about 2 hours before the deadline so we knew there would be some bugs with it xD Thanks for playing!

@ecenizo Thanks for the feedback! Agreed, the gameplay is a bit confusing for first timers, we would have loved to add some more feedback for the play as to what was going on but time got away from us! Thanks for playing and check back in future for any updates!

@benjiehotwheels Thanks for the feedback! The lack of clear controls in game is one of the biggest flaws in the current version, the controls listed on the LD page are a lot more clear on how to play and what the objective is. Also adding some more feedback for the player like sound and other animations would help a lot in understanding what's happening! Thanks for playing!

@taximan981 Thanks for the feedback! The 'gameplay loop' of the game wasn't added in until very late on into the project so we just had to accept that there would be bugs xD Thanks for playing and check back in future for improvements!

@stowy Thanks for the feedback! The initial plan was that applying an element to a Minion would let the player attack with that type, there was also a planned shield mechanic, but unfortunately time got away from us there. Thanks for playing and be sure to check back for future updates!

@rexagon Thanks for the feedback! The initial game idea allowed the play to use elemental attacks based on what they had applied to their Minion, but unfortunately we didn't have time to fully implement it, the back end has a whole system for calculating elemental damage based on types but it sucks we didn't have chance to get it added in completely. Thanks for playing!

I enjoyed the mood, the progression and the summoning mechanic was really nice. :) One technical thing I've noticed: At one point, the Continue/Edit Circle/Learn buttons remained on the screen even after choosing the Learn option. I could then start a fight while also choosing a new affix.

Maybe I'm sleep deprived from the Jam, but I can get past the tutorial book? This can be because of the 21:9 resolution (main menu canvas is scaled weird if this aspect ratio is used).

@rugg Thanks for the feedback! Yeah we knew that the end battle buttons were going to be a bit buggy when clicking them too quickly, next time hopefully we'll have the gameplay finished before the deadline so we can squash some of the bugs! Thanks for playing!

@rokevicius Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately the game only supports 1920x1080, we would have liked to add support for other resolutions and aspect ratios but we just didn't have time. Thanks for playing!

The rhythm-summoning mechanic was a bit confusing at first and then I was kept missing the "notes", but the summoning still worked somehow. That's an interesting concept and congrats on releasing the game! :v:

@0x0961h The summoning mechanic was supposed to be based on the four outter symbols. They would affect the type of summon based on how many you got. We didn't have time to implement that though.

The inner ones are the selected affixes that add bonuses to your minions damage. We wanted the enemies to spawn with random affixes too, but ran out of time.

Once again fell to scope creep
0x0961h
16. Apr 2024 · 13:41 UTC
@nimolas Oh, I can feel the pain of the score creep in game jams. But you managed to push through it and make a game anyway, so in the end it's all that matters!

I can't edit the summoning circle after the fight :(

Also maybe I chose a bad start layout but my minion is exactly par, and I'm loosing 10 souls every battle to spawn them.
ChrisBeck
16. Apr 2024 · 14:51 UTC
@kallico Thanks for the feedback, if you've added all of your unlocked affixes in, you can't edit the circle until you have learned new affixes from the learn menu. We realised too late that we should have had a button to clear the circle! As long as you add at least one affix to the circle, your minion should be able to beat the first few enemies. Thanks for playing!

Definitely needs some polish. Fights take a long time and become quite boring very quickly. However I like the idea and with the proper updates this could become a very good project! Keep up the good work! Also like the art and music.

The concept was super interesting, mixing and matching different elements to create a perfect demon is very enticing. I had fun watching my little baby blast all those ghouls. However, I found UI to be very unintuitive at first. I was very confused by "learn" page, thinking it only provides information on elements, it wouldve been really cool if the options were a bit more highlighted to resemble a button or something like that. Overall, a very decent attempt, I had a good time!

fist of all love the game really fun to play and i found a bug when your minion (summoned monster) dies it shows the continue... buttons but if you spam the continue button really fast it spawns like many games (round) again and again and it only follows the 1 round when the 1 round is over other minions and zombies?(enemy) stay and just do nothing.

I like the concept of uncovering runes and making a circle out of them to summon things. The few areas that Id focus on is feedback and pacing. It was a slow grind. I hit him for like a 5th of his health and he got me with almost nothing, so it was obvious that I was going to win, but I still had to sit through the projectiles crawling across the screen. Congrats on the entry!
