Summoner's (photography) Apprentice by Ansible

[raw]
made by Ansible for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

You're the summoner's (photography) apprentice and the owner has left you in charge today.

A point and click game about combining seemingly random items to summon a ghost (and take their picture)!

Everyone has led a different life so each brew you make will require a different combination of items to summon them.

Brew Room:

  • Drop 3 items into the cauldron to make a Brew potion. Which items? Well that's up to you. Read the profile and make a potion that suits the person best (and see if it works)

Summoning Room:

  • Click to set the 3 summoning stones. The Rune Book will help you to understand them...

Photo Room:

  • Click the shutter and snap the picture! You'll get a glimpse of how well you did in the categories (use this to learn what Brews work for next time!!)

-- Here's my first solo jam entry for LD. Html version available via the itch.io link!

-- No audio -- Note: the blue faced stones in the summoning room don't currently have any multipliers so won't effect the game!

A bit confusing to understand at first, but when you finally get it the game is pretty fun! Good game!

hand made assets gives a personal touch.

I thought the dog's pawn was a tartigrade, which would also be fun.

Love the art!

Instructions could probably be a bit more clear but I enjoyed figuring it out anyway.

It took me a while to understand what to do but the idea is pretty fun. The art style reminds me a lot of Undertale, very nice.

Love the idea of this. Difficult to figure out the right associations though. Could be really good if fleshed out a bit more though - and adding audio would be good!

Nice game! The idea is very unique, and the gameplay reminds me a lot of Papers, Please (in a good way!). The artwork, though simple and perhaps incomplete, is somewhat charming to me, as it still captures the essence of the environment.

I do wish there was a bit more feedback when getting the results, or hints while choosing objects and placing runes. I've played this extensively and tried to figure out a consistent way to get the right potion, but I haven't been able to figure out. And I gave up on the runes entirely, as I couldn't really see a connection between them and any other aspect of the game, besides the end results. As a result, it sort of becomes a black box problem with many different possible explanations, and without any guidance on what to focus on, it becomes very difficult to solve.

But perhaps that is just the competitive, completionist, a-little-tilted-that-I-couldn't-beat-the-game side of me speaking. This game is still fun to play and quite immersive; the fact that I got hooked into trying to figure it all out speaks for itself. The different stages are cohesive and seamlessly connected, with a clear end goal. I really felt like an apprentice grinding this work out! Awesome job overall.

(Also, no need to say "sorry" for asking the player to refresh to play again! My game ended up breaking several times when adding a "play again" feature, so it's completely understandable and maybe even preferable to just ask for a quick refresh.)

very similar to an initial idea I had for a potion-making game, really cool. I really like the aesthetic I think with more time you could've really brought it to life.

Love the graphics style. I think i still don't know everything about this game, but had fun trying to discover what should i do and what the rules are. Nice entry.

Enjoyed trying to figure out which trait every item corresponded to. Its a nifty puzzle game that suites the theme well.

@anvilesque Thanks for this detailed feedback comment it's super helpful. Really cool/funny to hear you got hooked in and sorry to tilt! I was definitely playing with the black box, but really wanted to find a balance that still worked for the player. The 3rd 'photo' stage was intended to be a more rewarding/hinting loop for figuring out and confirming your suspicions of the different item associations - like you say, it needs more! But, I'm glad you saw the cohesion in general. Cheers again :)

Couldn’t figure out at all how it works :( I also barely have time to read the feedback when summoning at the last step, so it’s hard to continue.

@fractal thanks and sorry :(
I wanted to do something more there but planned poorly... I wish that I'd have at least set the timer longer for the results fadeout though, as I agree it's too quick!

Cool potion brewing game and idea here, I do agree with some other comments on how the hand drawn art is really charming, but the lack of instructions being really confusing. I didn't really understand what I was supposed to do, the potion brewing/summoning/picture was not clear to me. I think adding more explanations of what each step of the game was for would help a lot with conveying what I was supposed to do. Solid job for your first solo entry, good job with this!
