Don't Get Summoned! by busisen

[raw]
made by busisen for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Avoid getting summoned to your boss’ office :computer:

You work at your 9-5 office job, and while your colleagues are pleasant enough, you want as little face time with them as possible. You may get summoned for meetings or social events with coworkers, but do your very best to avoid them whilst keeping their approval of you high and finishing your other tasks on time. Otherwise you will get called to your boss’ office and it’s game over for your minimum effort office tactics.

Controls: Mouse mainly, plus wasd/arrow keys and space bar for one task. Play in fullscreen for the most authentic office experience.

This is our first time making this type of game (first game ever for one of us) and first time doing pixel art. Feedback is appreciated. Enjoy!

And just to clarify, "AW" means "After-Work" in Sweden. During development we thought this was a universal term haha

If you can't run it here, try itch: https://busisen.itch.io/dont-get-summoned

Minor fixes: adjusted some button alignments in end screen, adjusted a movement speed variable to account for webgl build bug(?), bugged window drag interaction, corrected input placeholder text in one task

Love the take on the theme and the humor! Almost a bit too realistic.

I really loved the variation of minigames, it felt like I was crunching for a deadline. Loved the psycho guy jumpscare and the geography game. I was a bit confused at the ones where you have to for example write three colors, but once I understood it was a really fun one too and felt like a real task my coworker would ask from me. Also all the small details and jokes were amazing, so much attention to detail! 5/5

The game felt so real that I actually thought I was working a 9 to 5 job. Truly terrifying.

Ditto @vantalogic's comments - this captures mindless tedium/busywork a little too accurately

Sound design was on point and matches the pixel art quite well!

What a great multitasking game, really relatable and hectic experience. I still have no idea what my job was but maybe it's irrelevant. Definitely one of my favorites now.

@jejkobb thanks for the comment! I agree that the introduction of some, especially the three words task are a bit lacking, tutorial wise. I'm glad you managed to get the hang of it!

and to everyone else, thanks for playing and the comments, glad you enjoyed it :)

This is a pretty good game, but I probably shouldn't have played this before going to work lol

@klose thank you! it was a pretty stressful weekend lol - managed to build a pretty decent window structure which made adding new things not super difficult.

This was so cool! A few things remind me almost too much of work  The art, sound, and overall vibe were all superb and I loved the sense of humor. All of the mini-games were cool and made sense, and the office psycho was absolutely terrifying. Great job!

What a creative concept. Well done on the execution too. I couldn't figure out how to answer the "enter the text on the image" prompt (there was no image). The standup invite was hilarious. Great entry!

Interesting. Hard to keep up with the tasks, though a little easier the second time. For the window where you have to tell your coworker 3 types of things, some of the words were way too long for me to finish in time. For example, 3 types of continents, or 3 types of berries (unless the game accepts just the berries prefixes, since most berries contain the word berry). Typing out Africa, Antarctica and Europe was not something I could finish before the task ended :( In comparison, 3 types of animals were easier to think up shorter words I was more used to typing -- Bird, cat, fish.

Otherwise, I liked the graphics and interface and the humor was clever.

@erik-tate thank you for the kind words! glad you enjoyed it

@frozenfire92 thanks! will do :) if you want a challenge, 7:39 is the unofficial wr for the game hahah - was lucky with getting the nuke task scripts for that to happen though

@icyyw thank you so much! was definitely a challenge trying to balance "fun" with having it feel like an office environment

@jake-g thanks jake! did the captchas not look similar to this for you? the captcha fonts just didn't load? for the captcha task, it's like any old-school captcha - you have to write the letters that show up. of course, if you can't see them at all that's a different story lol. they should definitely be included in the unity build though

![image.png](///raw/80c/94/z/644be.png)

@quinnster thanks a lot :) and we agree, some tasks are definitely harder. we tried making it so that every task didn't feel the same, sometimes you're a bit luckier than others depending on which you get

@zyntist I'm glad you found it fun :) and yeah hahah some tasks do feel a bit monotonous. tried to spice them up with space invaders (snake was also planned), but didn't have time for everything unfortunately

@kobato-games it's true that the tasks get a little overwhelming after a while. I agree that the berry task is the most difficult one, and as of right now you can't just write the prefixes, but you can write berries like acai and goji, etc. for the animal task, it actually specifically asks for animals starting with the letter S!! regardless, thank you so much for the thoughtful comment, appreciate all your feedback.

43 tasks in 5:24. What a great game! Super hectic but in the best way possible. My favorite task was the country locator. I was sometimes unsure when I actually failed or succeeded in the tasks, the sounds sometimes sounded negative, but the satisfaction bar rose. A small issue in an otherwise enjoyable experience. Also, the portraits are fantastic! Great job.

@busisen You're welcome. Good to know it accepts some shorter berry names. In hindsight, I could have done Asia instead of trying to remember how to spell Antarctica within a few seconds. Maybe some of those mini games are more doable once you replay enough times to figure out the faster options.

@jake-g I finally understood what you meant haha, I had copied the textinput from the captcha task to the three word-task and forgotten to change the placeholder text, which understandably causes confusion. I've fixed it in the latest build!

@keithswanger thank you so much keith, I really liked your game as well. and that's a very respectable score! as for the feedback sounds from task completion/failure - I kinda agree, and it was also something I didn't know how to best solve. Right now, every task/window is assigned a coworker, and they have a positive and negative sound depending on how well you did, but it's kinda hard to tell these apart. I actually changed all positive sounds to a more generic "success-sound" just now for testing, and while it's more clear, it also takes away the vibe of you doing tasks for other people in an office environment and "hearing their feedback". Not sure about the best solution, but keeping it as is for now. either way, appreciate the rating and comment :) edit: I changed the success sound to be more clear!

@kobato-games yep, you're right. it definitely gets easier over time. you learn quite quickly what every task does and requires of you and it turns into a more strategic game - which tasks to avoid, when to use the nuke scripts, and so on. but yeah, some tasks aren't always super clear.

The best game I've played so far. The idea is original and nice, the gameplay is a little too repetitive, but the idea of having the player do small tasks works well, nice job!

I love this take on the theme! And I can definitely relate as an introverted person! I like this idea of constant harassment by virtual communication in order to avoid the worse fate of face to face communication(or worse a phone call!). Well done!

@zerolarih thank you so much! I really enjoyed your game too!

@chiara-sanviti ditto, your group's game was incredible! such a fun, polished, complete experience. thanks a lot for the comment! It's true that it becomes a little repetitive, would've loved to implement a few other minigames as well, but ran out of time.

@pandalk @momod thank you :) and yes, the three word tasks are definitely the toughest ones, except for maybe the colour one. I always skip them too, when trying to score high. it's just better to focus your energy on the other tasks hahah. thanks a lot for the comments!

@nadia-pixel thanks a lot, office psycho is a fav for sure hahah

@syudzius @whenyoucantfindafriend thank you so much, glad you liked it!

Innovative concept, slick graphics, pleasing color palette, good humor. First playthrough I tried to click on things quickly and being a yes man without fully reading and died to the psycho, lol.
Funny how my game could be a fitting sequel to this one.
Loved the minigames, the captchas always get me.
Best game I played in the jam so far.
