Defend your lair...

It is not as easy as one would think, being an evil necromancer in a hellish fortress. Every other day, it seems some heroic paladin or another marches in, intent on 'cleansing' the place you live.

So prepare your spellbook once more, and summon your minions to ward off this latest annoyance.

Like any evil wizard worth his salt, you can modify your spells to adapt to the challenge, using both magical prefixes and suffixes to summon the right combination of beasts for hero-slaying.

Gameplay

  • The crusader will move through your lair, cleansing ritual sites. If he gets through all of them, it's game over.
  • Use WASD to input spell combinations.
  • Take 'prefixes' from the left and 'suffixes' from the right for unique results.
  • Space bar locks the spell in, click to cast, Q to cancel.

Mechanics

  • Our shiny hero adapts to what you throw at him - swarms of weaker monsters will turn him into a reckless horde killer, and stronger ones will make him armour up. Strategise accordingly to bait him into letting his guard down. For example, try luring him into 'Hordebreaker' mode with mass zombies, then put the hurt on him with some tentacles...

Known issues

  • Weather effect is turned off by default due to causing performance issue on some machines (can turn it back on in settings)

Post-jam plans

  • Difficulty progression - a series of crusaders that get stronger each time you beat them, leading to a smoother difficulty curve as mechanics are mastered

Really fun game! Super hard (didn't even come close to knocking that guy out), but great controls and concept. Plus, mad props for getting in the nice sound and music--I never manage to get to that in my entries.

Oh my gosh, how did you guys whip up such an astounding piece in such little time? I'm head over heels for your art style – it must've been a herculean effort, right? And the game's difficulty is just perfect, exuding a vibe of total maturity. I'm so hyped, I can't wait to throw my cash at it! Shut up and take my money!!

Very fun game! It is a bit easy once you undertand the controls, but I love the gameplay!

Very cool. Love the casting system with the directional combination.

Loved it, really clever twist on some established concepts. Clean and consistent graphics, nice music and sfx. I didn't notice the Prefix list until halfway through the game XD but that's on me.

I like the Diablo vibes. Having to press Space to Confirm and then left click to summon is kind of annoying. Amazing that you pulled this off for game jam!

Loved the gameplay and the fact that you can add prefix to your summons made it fun to try out the different combinations. The different controls to confirm and summon was a bit weird at the beginning. Overall, very cool game. Well done!

Fun idea, the prefixes are a great addition, it reminded me a bit of the days of playing Magicka and trying to summon big spells :)

I have to confess that I totally missed the fact that the hero had multiple modes and was affected differently by the enemies though (I’m only reading the full description after playing the game), I won by throwing everything I had at him in the end 😅

Dang, this is impressive given the time constraints! I like the art, and the controls are pretty clever. Having an original OST is awesome as well :)

Very impressive gameplay. I enjoyed the old schooly visual style and it was satisfying to get all the summons out. It did get a little bit easy after getting more than 1 tentacle into the game but with some balancing this could be a solid indie game. Good job!

Great game! The music is banging and the effects are beautiful. It probably gave me carpal tunnel tho xD

Cool game, definitely challenging and intriguing. I also missed the hero modes, just spammed as much as I can. Also found it hard to memorize combinations so I rarely looked at the hero.

Very fun way of summoning monsters, nice music and mood. I was too concentrated on casting spells to see the difference between zombie and skeleton but tentacles where strong for sure.

First time I killed the crusader the game stopped without showing the end screen maybe there is a bug ? (the monsters where still hitting him). On the second try I got the victory screen.

A lot of potentials for more levels ! Maybe some easy one to get used to the spells first to have more time to look at the art.

what a fun game!

looks wise it was super polished and the gameplay was well thought out. the game was maybe a tad easy to clear, it would've been cool to see more levels or have the difficulty ramp up and maybe some other mechanics to add or swap the spells.

but I really loved the theme and the polish of it all! The soundtrack was the perfect mood for the game as well.

Hey mate, thanks so much for your kind words!
I put things up on Soundcloud periodically here: https://soundcloud.com/lachlan-james-music
I'll do a public upload of this little OST in a week or two once my ears are nice and fresh for it.

Thanks for your feedback around the difficulty (whether easy or hard) and ways to expand it! As can be the case with jam games, we were finalising mechanics and getting assets in right up until submission, so unfortunately weren't able to do as much group playtesting as we'd have liked to, and as you know, balance is always going to be so tough under time constraints.
If we do get a post-jam build out, that's definitely going to be the main theme - having some progression, where the enemy starts off easy to kill, and grows in strength each time you knock him over. Maybe gaining abilities over time. Thanks for playing and taking the time to give feedback!

@ffenril @daviiiiiiid @alpdogan @avareii
Yes, it's definitely easy to miss the depth of the combat system @ChewieCB ended up putting together - wouldn't be a game he touched unless it had some serious mechanics going on. We're thinking about maybe getting a bestiary (with a little info on summons) and more of a strategy guide in if we get a post-jam build. Thank you for your feedback!

@starless @kaisenthegreatone
I'm in love with the SFX too!! Crazy output from @Stead for his first jam. More to come with any luck.

@yuu @enver-arco
Thanks for the feedback! If there's a post-jam build, we'll be looking to simplify the control scheme a little (maybe eschewing the spacebar to confirm so the spells just auto lock/fail).

@avareii
Our whole team was delighted to hear you refer to the graphics as 'clean and consistent'!! One of the tricky things was getting the assets from @fireforge @redvirus and @akashdeep-hehar to all sit together nicely, but they did an amazing job converging. Add a little bit of @johnminer 's CRT shader magic and seems we pulled it all together.

@stevie257
I love the art too. Definitely really, really lucky to work with such a capable and varied art team this jam!!

Very styly game! Love the modifiers you can add to the summonings, really add an extra level of strategy. Excellent work!

This was fun. The music was a bop, and I loved the visuals. The crusader was definitely tough, but slinging together prefixes and summons helped me see (almost) all the possible combos. Seriously: great mechanical take on the theme. I'd love to see a game like this in the future!

The game looks and sounds great! I really enjoyed seeing all different monsters and exploring my realm (together with the crusader). I like the idea of being a bad guy and summoning various abominations.

But I think that if the game was longer, it would get really repetitive. Also, if you're trying to win, you're concentrated on casting as many spells as possible by providing all the correct inputs and this way you don't really pay attention to the actual battle. So if you're planning to take the game post-jam, you'll need to find a solution to these problems.

Great job! Good luck to your team with your future projects!

Your music in the game is very impressive! I've almost learned all the spell combinations, the game is actually a little more difficult than I expected. Great job guys!

Quite fun once you know what you're doing. A bit confusing at start, but after figuring out controls - quite fast-paced.

Not sure if it's supposed to be like that or softlock, but when I killed crusader while he was cleansing third location nothing happened? Also entering correct combo but getting it reset because I pressed space just a a few frames before cooldown ends was a bit annoying. And a bit of personal nit-pick: Do not use chromatic abberation on text, I beg you, it's horribly unpleasant to read when you have poor eyesight and astigmatism.

This is So GOOD! I enjoyed the music, the story, and the mechanics. Though, I think I was never able to spawn any skeleton. Unsure if its just me or not but regardless, GREAT GAME!
