Sir Lancelittle by BaggerSmurf

[raw]
made by BaggerSmurf for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Sir Lancelot's son, sir Lancelittle, is not the best of summoners. While he can consistently summon an attack, he has zero control over which attack will be summoned. He still tries his best to save the world from summonsters, though!

  • First, make sure you have your sound on! :D
  • Make sure you press the 'full screen' button
  • Start with a set of weapon summons in your deck.
  • After clearing a room, you'll be rewarded with a random summon that you can choose to add to your deck.
  • Whenever you attack with your summon, your next summon will be drawn from your deck.
  • When the deck is empty, it will be reshuffled and you can draw again.
  • The goal is to use your summons and agility to clear the rooms, find the boss and kill it.

For the best experience, play the game on itch (see link below)

SirLancelittle1.gif SirLancelittle2.gif

We've been having a lot of fun making all of the code, art and sound effects for this!

Nice concept and artwork, but I feels like there aren't much strategy when I am playing.

Great job! The gameplay felt nice and there was a nice variety of attacks. Felt just right to have a sense of strategy but often just spamming clicks works fine when cornered (which is a good thing in my opinion). Good job guys!

Love it. Sound effects are hilarious. I think the hit box of each weapon can be showed in advance on the floor or sth. It's a bit difficult to aim at the moment.

This isn't the sort of thing I usually play, so I'm terrible at it and can only clear a couple rooms. But the amazing sound effects certainly motivated me to keep going!

Enjoyed the laser-eye enemies as they meant I had to keep moving and not just stand still spamming buttons and hoping for the best.

@teahands that was indeed the idea of the laser-eyes. Great to hear it worked out as intended, thanks!

lovely sound design, i enjoyed the silly attitude a lot! only issue is that i struggled with understanding hit boxes of the enemy, so some indication where i will hit before i cast my attack would have been nice, otherwise great job!

The first funny game that made me laugh out loud (the sound effects were so humorous), and while I was initially attracted to the abstract graphics and effects, the combat was just as fun and had a turn-based feel to it

SFX are awesome and the gameplay is smooth. Adding cards to the deck would sometimes cause multiple of them to be added, including the unwanted ones. It would also be nice to have a mechanic to remove cards from the deck.

Overall, pretty fun!

Nice game with brilliant weapon voice acting! It would also be nice to add some one-time use cards to the deck for healing or buffs (closer to the beginning)

As someone that does not very often play games, I loved it that I could practice moving around and casting my magic before the actual game started, much better than just reading a tutorial with the controls. I love the cute-looking art style and you have some very funny ideas for weapons. The slime was my favorite :)

Cool! If you had written the music yourself, it would be cooler! It's interesting to play. When taking new cards, the ability is triggered, which is a little frustrating. The graph is a little unclear where the doors are!

Awesome game, love the mix of genres! Also the sound effects are hilarious. It's really imbalanced in that I can just spam click without regard for which weapon is coming up since there's no cooldown to them. The idea itself is really great and I hope it gets expanded on. Great job!

The random weapon each time you attack is a lot of fun, reminds me of some mods for dark souls that equip a new weapon each second haha
At the end I had a lot of slimes to my deck and it was amusing to flood the map xD

Fun game! Reminds me a lot of Binding of Isaac. My only issue is that sometimes clicking on the UI causes an attack to go off. So if I save my next attack for the next room, by adding a new card to my deck it consumes the card I was saving previously. Overall a good game, good job!

Very interesting concept of your game. The idea of summoning powers and weapons in sequence opens up some fun possibilities. The graphics are functional, as is the sound. It's a simple project, but really fun.

Congratulations!

I didn't get to finish it (a room full of eye-monsters sealed the deal for me), but I liked it. Especially the beautifully mouthcrafted soundeffects of said eye-monsters. :D

Jokes aside: Solid entry. If you want some constructive criticism:
- I'd give some visual feedback the moment the dash is recharged, like a little flash or something; it'll make the game feel way more controllable and responsive
- When you switch rooms and are presented with your new cards, choosing one automatically casts the next card. A very minor thing, but fixable for a little more polish :)

Altogether I enjoyed it, good contribution! :)

16. Apr 2024 · 21:13 UTC
@shanzhai Thanks for your detailed feedback and constructive criticism! Indeed we were planning to do some indicator like a circle or something to indicate your dash was recharging (as well for a weapon attack as you can spam the weapon a bit too much currently). Also the fact that when you choose a new card the currently equipped card is being summoned was a bug we didn't manage to fix within the jam.
There's a whole load of other things we wanted to add/change/balance but overall we're quite happy with our result as first time jammers. Thank you so much for playing and commenting!

Difficult to understand where my damage was coming from and the deck system is not immediately obvious. Starting with nothing and getting one card and progressing through a deck would be a more intuitive way to teach people this system. I want to like it though, I hope you continue to support it to smooth out gameplay.

Fun idea, loved the sound effects. Liked the idea that every attack was a random card in a deck, it forces the player to adapt and think quickly, that mechanic could be expanded a lot. Fun that you got a boss into the game aswell. Overall good work!

Great submission!

Straightforward to understand but still managed to be very fun.
Appreciated just how much choice the player had when making their decks, really helped to make me feel like I can play however I like.

The art style and music were also pretty charming.

This one has great sound design, loving the hurt sounds. The deck building aspect feels off but I'm not really sure what else to replace it with either.

It'd be nice if the enemy spawns had a lasting marker until they have actually spawned and if the beamers had some form of anticipation right before they attack instead of an instant laser.

Cool stuff, quite enjoyable!

A good game, I would have preferred to be able to choose the cards to include in the deck and maybe even discard some of them, but I understand that programming so many things is not exactly easy. However, you can still try to improve it because there is a good starting point! Great job!

18. Apr 2024 · 22:26 UTC
Really interesting idea, fits great with the theme! I think the combat system could have been polished a bit more, since it's often difficult to understand how different weapons will move and their hitboxes.
AshKetchdem
18. Apr 2024 · 22:55 UTC
@nuanda79 @tommy Thanks for your feedback! We definitely would've loved to add more to the game, but unfortunately this jam is only 3 days! We had plans for card leveling, more attacks, some way to indeed remove cards from your deck, more enemies, and actually some run-to-run progression. Then we also wanted to add classes (start with more magic attacks or sword attack or a mix) but the weapon pool we managed to include was too little (and so was the time) to implement this. We decided to offer as much of the game in our final submission to get the general idea of the game across. Once again thanks for the feedback and congrats on your own submissions!

When you need laser sfx but haven't got access to a real eyeball laser, this works great! All your sfx make me smile like a little kid and I love it! The music is on point, too - it helps build a bit of a Monty Python-ish feel to all of this.

Fun concept! loved spamming the summons to tackle the enemies, just wished there were a bit more of a progression with the enemy types. For example I started the first room with all eyeball laser enemies and the next room was a few flies.
