HellWard

Pitch

Step into the role of a divine ambassador, tasked with defending against a wicked ritual that threatens to plunge the world into darkness. Confronted by a towering pentacle and an perfidious necromancer, you stand your ground knowing that the end draws near. With only the holy light within you to rely on, brace yourself for relentless waves of monstrous foes sent by the necromancer. How long can you withstand the onslaught and protect the realm from ultimate doom? Prepare for a survival-defense experience where your faith and resilience will be put to the ultimate test.

How To Play

Use the mouse to move the shield (only horizontal movement matters). When the manabar is full, press space to unleash the Holy Mantle!

The team

Me.

When starting this jam, I wanted to compete in the Compo. Unfortunatly, I am not able to produce (good enough!) art and music for games I enjoy doing and am proud showcasing to others so I didn't opt for the Compo. Though, I still decided to work alone, and to only work within 48h (In fact, I worked for ~20h) on this project as a challenge.

Great game, but what exactly does the holy mantle?

@josang1567 it makes you invincible for its duration. Every projectil is immediatly destroyed when reaching the light.

Cool game! The music is very fitting. It's a bit weird that the summoning circle has way less pixels than some other sprites that are very high quality.

@gulcar it is because I drew it myself, and that I'm not an artist. Rest is taken from 3rd party and are free to use assets (all 3rd party assets I used are mentioned in the credit on the itch & on the ludum page as I do not own them).

Pretty good entry, quite simple but it's easy to understand and you quickly want to beat your previous scores and get better at it. Though a little indicator of how long does the Holy Mantle lasts would be good, like something to tell you it's gonna disappear before it does!

The game is actually fun, I like how there is a dificulty selection option, even though Im always gonna just start with the Hardcore one lol, the textures are nice but the gameplay is too repetitive in my opinion idk, maybe its just because of my personal prefrences.

An interesting idea, however, there is a small problem (when I move the mouse cursor further away from the character, the shield stops turning)

@tryam Yes, well... at first, the 'mapping' of shield turning was from one end of the screen to an other. After few tests from friends around me, some complained that it was sometimes too hard to switch quickly from one end to the other, thus I made qol update on monday 15th where I changed the mapping from 1/4 to 3/4 of the screen width, so basically from 0 to 1/4 and from 3/4 to max_width of the screen is no use in the shield movement, in order to make the shield movement range smaller for the mouse and thus 'better'. I would argue than in a full fledged game, it would be an interesting setting to have in order to let the player chose the width's extent of the "playable" area for the mouse.

That was fun! I like the vibe, I feel it could be even more metal by syncing the attack landing on your shield (or not) with the music ^^. A solid entry, congrats!

@maxgun Thanks! Note that the pentacle is already pulsing in rhythm ;p!

A great simple to understand core mechanic, but you definitely get a lot of mileage out of it with the different levels. The pentagram syncing to the beat of the music is a really nice touch as well, definitely adds to the vibe!
