Necrowizardry! by pickens-inc

[raw]
made by pickens-inc for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

An epic duel to determine the fate of necrowizardry itself!

Play the Good Wizard Justice as he faces down the Evil Wizard Malevolence atop a (conveniently flat) mountain surrounded by lava. Unfortunately, the school of necromancy basically only contains a single spell: summon basic skeletons!

However, unlike Malevolence, Justice prefers to take matters into his own hands. Summon your mindless skeletal horde, then possess them to guide their blades to the Evil Wizard, and put him down for good! Be warned though, when possessing, your frail wizardy-self is unmoving and vulnerable!

Don't just play the combat as the wizard, your skeletons are there to be possessed with Tab or E!

Tips:

  • Possessed skeletons are more powerful than their mindless brothers, don't be afraid to be outnumbered!
  • Your spell begins only summoning a couple skeletons at a time. As time goes on, more skeletons will be summoned with each spell!
  • Make sure to keep summoning skeletons when the abiltiy is off cooldown!
  • Switch back constantly between going on the offensive with your skeletons and switching back to the wizard to evade and reinforce your ranks!
  • Listen out for the evil wizard's voice cues, telegraphing his projectile attack! They kill your skeletons instantly, so be ready to dash!

Note: The music is "Fields of Fury" by TeknoAXE. Please do not rate on the music. The audio is all our own.

The art style of the game reminds me of CubeWorld. Very beautiful and original.

Visually interesting game. Voxels are unusual. (Sinking my moist desires for Cube World). But I had technical problems with Unreal Engine 5. So I give it a 4 for visuals in advance.

Very cool voxel graphics! Also I liked animations like wind applied to the hat, nice little detail.

I enjoyed voice acting very much! Was surprised when I heard it. VAs did a great job! Thanks for the game.

About the gameplay: thats a pity that I couldn't throw skeletons from the platform :( I wish there were no invisible walls...

Making 3d games look good in a game jam is near impossible, but somehow you managed! I really love the voxels with the fancy shaders, there's a fine line between looking good (kind of like Minecraft with cool shaders) and looking cheap.

There was a lot of really cool mechanics going on, as I was playing I actually found myself wanting to play this against other people. I could really see this being a great.

I liked the fact that you had to balance swapping into skeletons and back to the wizard for safety. Oh and my absolute favourite was blasting the enemy wizard into a group of my own skeletons and watch as they juggle him in the air.

Finally, audio is phenomenal, specially the superb voice acting, it gives the game so much personality.

To sum it up, I had a blast, but literally and metaphorically

PS, tried to go for flawless victory, I got close:

@meru Thank you! And you're most welcome. The LD is all in the spirit of fun and kind, constructive feedback, so I try to give it where I don't see it. You'll kind of see examples here of what I was talking about on your game! I'd really liked to have had more than just skeletons to use, but instead we focussed on making the skeletons have a lot of feedback to feel nice to use!

I really love the entire vibe of this project. The animations, the lighting and the models all come together to create a cozy vibe. I really enjoyed playing it and felt like it was appropriately balanced. Good idea to make the wizard itself not too powerful and really nudge the player to interact with the special mechanics of this game. A very good entry, well done!
