LAST CHANCE FOR BERNIE

Bernie hasn’t been doing well at work lately. The boss is very upset with him.

Bernie's job is to guard the captured princess, who is locked away just one screen to the right. Seems like an easy enough job, but Marius the princess saving hero has been slipping past every single time.

Today is the LAST CHANCE FOR BERNIE. He'd better not screw up.

---

GOAL:

Stop Marius, who comes in from the left, from reaching the right side of the screen. Touching Marius will kill him. If Marius hits you on the head however, you die.

---

CONTROLS:

Press arrow keys to move Bernie.

This is my second entry for Ludum Dare. I planned on making a real AI to go up against, but that proved too difficult for me in the short 48 hours of the compo. So instead, Marius is simply following a set path. Sadly, struggling with the AI for half of Saturday left me with no time to improve the graphics. I almost gave up entirely half way through, but I'm glad I didn't.

I've tried to create this game using what I know: HTML, CSS and Javascript. It turned out to be very difficult to make a real-time action game with these clunky tools. There are glitches and varying performance issues. I recommend using either Chrome or Firefox, but even in those browsers, it's not running all that great.

So what I've learned from participating this LD: it's better to use a real game engine for this sort of thing. I'll look into this for the next LD, so I can deliver something that gives a better experience.

This reminds me of a sparring match where you're positioning yourself for taking the advantage. I like it!

Very cool game! Especially the music is (once again) perfect.

I think Bernie is a bit to slow for the game. But I agree that it is a more realistic depiction of a platformer baddie.

Nice work!

Very good idea!
It's too bad but I think that Bernie is too slow.

Thanks for your comment in my game page (ladybirds m.)
There's a stage where the plant say that you have to retry if you don't bring to her at least one ladybird.

I agree the game is moving too slow.

Bernie is slow on purpose though. It is done to make the game a bit more challenging.

If Bernie would move faster, then it becomes easier to catch Marius.

So I should make Marius faster as well, but then I'd have to redo all the levels, because the path Marius takes is tweaked for the current speed.

All in all there just wasn't time enough to do that :(

Love the music, creates a great mood, moving is a bit slow

I quite like the idea, but with the current implementation unfortunately it doesn't make for a very fun game. Your movement is very limited, which is understandable considering you're a Goomba, but it leads to complete dependence on initial positioning. If you don't get Mario immediately, it's an instant game over as the game gives you no chance to recover. The allowed margin for error feels way too small for how long the game takes to play (you can be playing for a minute [most of which is spent waiting for Mario to arrive] and then lose the entire game due to being half a second late), a situation which is worsened by the fact there is no way to reliably predict where Mario will land other than guesswork.

Still, the idea was amusing, and the music was great. My best run was 6 points, but the game isn't replayable enough for me to improve that score.

Thanks for your feedback, VDZ :)

My top score was 12, but I just watched a friend get to 20!

Awesome concept, and fun trying to guess what "Marius" will do. Comment from the two year old watching: "Like that song !"

Cute and funny, nice clean stylized art. He moves so slowly though, it's no wonder his boss wants to fire him. :P

Awesome take on the theme. Life's unfair for those goombas - so slow! Gave me real satisfaction to kick Mario...sorry, Marius' ass. Great work!

Thanks everyone for the kind words :) I didn't feel very confident about my creation, but reading your comments makes me a little happier about this thing.

Regarding random levels, this was initially the plan, but I failed to make a proper AI. So in the end, I had to resort to manually creating levels & paths for Marius.

overall i had fun with this game. i think theres a lot to like even if it is a bit flawed in places.

the gameplay of positioning your self in such a way that the player runs into you is an interesting concept and a surprising amount of fun. i think that its a creative idea that you could probably do a lot with, but i think you'd need to flesh it out more.

my complaints are mainly that the graphics aren't great (although the players face is very charming), and the controls could use work (you move very slowly).

I move slower than a molasses and it gets a bit repetitive. Other than that, this is pretty good!

Yet another entry from you with a good sense of humor! It felt like a fun take on the theme, the whole thing ended up surprising strategic, trying to predict Marius' jumps based on the block placements and set yourself up in a good position. Once he turned up you couldn't really start making adjustments due to your slow movement speed, but it made a lot of sense, playing merely as a low level mob, presumably at an early point in Marius' journey. Funny to imagine the fictional player controlling Marius, and their frustration at this one damn mob that kept killing them over and over..

Nice work!

I can't help but feel there is some deep, important metaphor here about the importance of tripping tall people over before they bomp your noggin and steal your money. Simple and solid, fun tunes and original idea. Eleventy hundred stars

Yeah Bernie felt slow but once I got the hang of it, it wasn't bad.

I got up to 5.

I like the idea of where you are one of those easy to kill mobs (yet when I play platformers they without fail kill me), and it is your job to kill the hero.

I wish there was more interaction between you and Marius. Definitely would require more in-depth programming. But if he could juke you, and you could trick him, that would be fun. Of course this would require making it easier to control Bernie.

Also, adding names was fantastic. The music was fun, I also appreciate doing this all without the canvas.

Nice concept ! a bit easy because of the path thing, but i liked the idea :) Character is a bit slow, and level randomization makes slightly different games each time. Cool !

Really neat concept! Found it quite challenging. I included it in part 17 of my Ludum Dare 33 Compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/qmrKCmuKBqk

An off-brand Goomba simulator, awesome! Surprisingly challenging, but I managed to get up to 12 points. The initial position you choose pretty much determines how that particular encounter goes. Cool music too! I loved your entry last time around as well (showed it off to some of my family, we had a good laugh about it!)

Think I'm gonna keep an eye out if you participate in future jams. Great job!
