Summoners's Woe: Heroic Hijinks by SvenErik

[raw]
made by SvenErik for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Welcome to Summoner's Woe: Heroic Hijinks, where the tables turn, and you take on the role of the cunning dungeon master. In this tower defence adventure, you command the forces of darkness to thwart the relentless onslaught of valiant heroes seeking to plunder your domain. Strategize, summon menacing structures, and unleash a myriad of treacherous traps to foil their righteous quest. Will you emerge victorious in this battle of wits and sorcery, or succumb to the relentless tide of heroic hijinks? The fate of your dark domain hangs in the balance as the dungeon heart needs time to repair to get to full strength, or just play the game.

Simple game, hard to play and solo ludum was a bit too harsh for me, tired me out.

You can:

Click on heroes for small damage if nothing else can be done

Summon buildings from first row, second row is non-building summons

* Pay in mind:*

Insanity loses the game

No mana, too much mana overcharged loses you the game

The dungeon heart dying is also a defeat!

I think I miss something since I definitly never succeed to make mana raise or even stabilize…

Is it asset from you? Then very good job.

I was thinking about tower-defense myself match very good summoning theme, then changed my mind.
But well… sure yours is better than what I could have come up with.

@misoukun
The third spell that creates Pylons helps with that, those raise mana, although you may need to have several at start as there's a passive mana drain thanks to the heart.

Thanks. I drew all the assets, though they were all placeholders haha, but got too tired in the end to replace them..

Oh really? Did you also think about having a dungeon to defend, or some other environment?

I love the assets, it's very clean and the game look finished, well done ! It's a little bit difficult to handle the differents "mana" but very interessting !

These are pretty good placeholders if you ask me! Very good job on the assets indeed!
My mana problem was the opposite, I was overdosed with mana and died :joy: .
Regardless, had a lot of fun, good job!

The game feels super tight and polished - you really made the most out of those pixels! Also really appreciated that you included a tutorial at the start. Losing the game due to a lack of mana is pretty punishing, but you warned us in advance I guess. Great job!

Great assets and clean design! I especially like the little summoner in the room! I feel that the balance between the different economies was a little obtuse when it came to how each unit affected the progressbars, though that might have been due to a bug + user error - only half of the summons had info text when hovered and I did accidentally skip a page in the tutorial. :laughing: I also didn't grok that I had to press space bar to be able to place the summons with klick. Either way - Excellent work and especially for a solo! Awesome submission! Great work!

@leozero Thanks! Oh yea, it's quite the hassle.. didn't think of it at start when I drew the idea on paper.. So far me and two people who tested it have finished it haha.

@leparlon Thank you! Addicted to mana~ :)

@laniph Thanks! ^^

@jlv Thank you! The tutorial should have been polished a bit though haha, it was made in bit of a hurry.

@mascoll Thanks! Yeah, the resource economy end up being quite the hassle and the tool-tip collisions were a bit off at times, if I have the time & energy I'll do a little post-ludum fix for all of those. Thanks again for the feedback! :v:

Very interesting game! Took a little while to understand some of it's mechanics and I really liked the sprite work and overall the feel of the game feels pretty unnerving, wish you luck on the Jam ^^

I struggled to understand how to play this at fist, and I'll be honest I'm still not sure I get it. Sometimes you can attack the enemies by clicking on them, sometimes you can't. Sometimes the dark spirit kills them instantly, sometimes it doesn't. Is this a bug?
I've reached very close to the end, but I will always run out of something first, and being unable to have a reliable way to kill enemies is kind of frustrating.
Nonetheless, I love the atmosphere and the graphics, and all the little animations!

@escyll Thanks! :)

@thatfirey Thanks, to you too!

@mateusboga Interesting, I didn't have it, but maybe I was going crazy testing by the end and didn't notice the clicking. The Dark Spirit kills the starting ones easily, stronger heroes comes at times. Initial plans had no clicking and visually different heroes and stuff. I can see why it would get frustrating yeah. Thanks for the feedback!

@unkilledshadow135-alex aha thanks! :

That was quite hard! :smile: But the game was a fun. There are some points I think would improve the gameplay:
* info on hover over, its hard to remember what building does what
* the current increase/decrease per second for reach resource to be able to see the impact of the buildings
* placing building not only by dragging, but also with only clicking

But great idea! :)

A tower defense game built really well, everything seems to be in the right place. Very engaging, I've played many games but I haven't managed to find the right strategy to beat even one level. Probably it's just me not being very good at this genre, but I enjoyed trying. In my opinion, you did a great job.

@karlo5o Thanks for the feedback and for the suggestions!

@nuanda79 Thank you! Oh I think it's not you.. it's that I made it a bit too hard. Balancing in such a short time is not one of my fortes haha.

Extremely cool aesthetic to the artwork! Definitely on the trickier side, and would be nice to have a bit more indication of what the resource generating bits are doing outside of the tutorial screens but I can appreciate that often comes down to time in a jam.

Definitely fun though, kept me trying again for a good while!
