Bloodrites by ToC

[raw]
made by ToC for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

You are waging a constant battle against your neighbor over a land dispute and they are slowly gaining the upper hand! You are forced to meddle in unholy rituals to summon demons to fight on your side. But beware the cost of dabbling in the unknown. Sacrifice, recruit or ransom captured soldiers to gain the necessary resources. Assault the enemy keep and destroy it once and for all!

The game uses only mouse control. It is best played in fullscreen mode.

The bottom left side of the screen displays your current summoners and their health. Bottom right has clickable buttons for each of the summons. You unlock more as you gain knowledge (blue icon number in the bottom mid). When you defeat a number of enemies, you will capture a hostage. You can choose what to do with this hostage in the topleft of the screen. Sacrificing them will get you blood stock, displayed by the number at the bottom. Recruiting them will gain you can extra summoner, and ransom will unlock another summoner slot. Summoning has a certain risk in blood cost. If you don't have enough in your stock, it will drain your summoners' health. Be careful.

Made in 72 hours from scratch. All art assets are original.

Age of war with magic, blood summoning and demons. Very cool!
I didn't play on a harder difficulty, but even on easy the game was really fun!
I'm probably going to play it again in the future just to see if there are more summons

Art is great, some should effects could've been nice, the gameplay is fun.
Overall great game! Very surprised how you manage to add so much content in such a short time.

Great game idea with impressive graphics, especially considering they were all created during the game jam! I did find it a bit challenging to understand the various options when dealing with hostages (recruit, sacrifice, and ransom). Overall, though, fantastic job!

Had lots of fun, played until the "Very Hard" difficulty and got absolutely rekt (100-0) by the last buffed wave of enemies xD

I might come back and play some more later :D

Two smallish things :
- It was difficult for me to understand at first what the various options do when you get hostages, a screen with some explanations before the game starts would've been nice to have
- The UI to choose what to do with the hostage is opposite on the screen from where you summon your creatures, would've been nice to place it a bit closer :D a bit of a nitpick but it's something that came in mind while I was playing

TLDR; 11/10 gr8 game m8

Your clear time was 03:17.35 :) - fun little game. Cool graphics and nice gameplay - some music and sounds would have made it even better. But all in all good job!

Neat little game, reminiscent of Classic flash game Age of War. Impressive for 72h.

Fun game with nice art, took me back to a game I used to play when I was younger. The only feedback I would give is to give some instructions on how the game should be played. It took a moment before I understood what the options meant and why it popped up.

Fun game! The UI was a bit hard to understand initially, but had fun once that barrier was crossed. Good entry!

Really enjoyed this one, love the concept, also reminds me of Age of War. I have spent lots of time playing Flash games a bit like this so was instantly having fun! Was a bit hard to work out what everything meant initially but once it clicked it was smooth sailing.

Nice entry, the gameplay mechanic is well thought out and has potential to create interest in the game. I also enjoyed the graphics. As mentioned by other reviewers, perhaps adding explanations about the summoning or ransom mechanics would improve the game's discovery. Until the end, I didn't understand the system between the blood drop and the blue resource. The healer is overpowered haha. Congratulations on the game, it was very enjoyable to play and complete the level! (2 minutes 39 hehe)

this game reminded me of another with an alien queen... so I got lost in it until the "insane" level

As someone who loved Age of War growing up, this was such a treat. I really enjoyed this, although I was a bit confused by the ransom mechanic at first. Really solid entry!
