Summonster by Poutine Studio

[raw]
made by Poutine Studio for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

You'll need to use your black magic powers to summon little to big monsters in order to escape de dangerous dungeon guarded by knights. Good luck!!

If you want to see more of Summonster in the future you can follow us on itch (see link bellow). We will keep updating the game and hopefully release it as a full game in the next year.

Wow this is the best game ever made! So amazing! (Hehe)

looks really good, nice work! I do have a suggestion to switch with TAB or some key instead of needing to press the exact number 1-5 etc to switch the summoned monster

The web version isn't working very well, if you want to play the game at its best, I would advise downloading it! Have Fun!

Great idea of using the different summons to help with platforming! The art is really good too, all of the summons are really unique from each other. I feel like some sound would help build atmosphere, even just a basic music loop. Also the jump felt very 'floaty' and imprecise but other than that, great job!

Really strong concept here, where you're basically creating your own platforms; the movement is a bit floaty and my character got stuck on a few of the edges, but I think you've created something very interesting with the theme that could very easily be expanded into a larger game.

fun idea, takes a bit to get but its fun once you get going. Great work.

@marin-davys We plan to do just that. Sorry for the couple of edges, we'll fix it promise. Thanks for the feedback.

@chrisbeck Yeah we know the movement is a bit floaty we just didn't have the time to do any better for the jam but it's getting improved soon for sure. We agree that music would have been nice for the atmosphere but just like the movement it was sacrificed due to the time limit. Thanks for trying our game!

@matt-swieboda Thanks for the idea of using TAB. We'll definitively add that in the future.

The concept is a very nice spin on platformers

Great idea, execution can still be improved... Quite happy that the controls worked immediately with my azerty keyboard (this is not always the case..!). I really like the silly designs for the characters ; just feel like they're a bit rough on the rendering but it's a jam game. Kinda buggy, got stuck and menu disappeared once, and the number keys weren't working.

Overall, quite fun and interesting idea, cute art but would have benefitted from more polish! Keep at it :>

@khelian Thanks for the feedback. We agree, it needs a lot of polishing.

Definitely neat with the summons being used to traverse! Controls were fine, same complaint that 5 and 6 is just too much, Q and E might have been better or shift or tab something.

Really unique idea that goes well with the theme! I also encountered the bug where pausing the game and resuming removes the UI, but that seems like a quick fix.

Great art too :)

@fenix131113 yup we agree but we lacked the time. Going to add them for the final game that's for sure. Thanks for trying out our game!

nice concept and fun gameplay, but very short:( it will be nice to have some open levels where i can use all of my minions and experiment with platforming

Cool concept and good execution. The art also looks charming.
Only complaint is that the camera was a bit high, I couldnt really see well in the last level where you go down.
Other then that it's great!

Hey, this is a cool game!
I love the ingenuity in concept. It really uses the theme well, and each of the monsters you summon fit such a valuable niche in platforming. The spiders were my favourite.
Nice work!

@hsg-gringo Yes, sadly we didn't have the time to do more then the tutorial, we do plan to make many more levels to let the player experiment with the mechanics. Thanks for playing and giving feed back!

@boroboro Thanks for the feedback. We'll make sure to fix that!

@jdeedubs Great to here you like our idea! Thanks a lot for playing!

Unfortunately I can't seem to launch the Windows executable, I get a window with the Unity logo and an error symbol before it just closes. (Feel free to reply at me if you want me to try a different build!)

This is a really solid concept for a game! It was a bit short and I'd love to see more :D

how many jams have you done now? (not just LD) as this feels very experienced :D

Please can you rate my game too? :)

@d3kryption Thanks! It's actually our first time doing a jam and most of us had never made a game before. Yes of course we'll rate yours!

I liked the art, unfortunately I got myself soft locked a few times in the short time I played. Was unable to progress because the summons would die or I accidentally placed them wrong, which prevented me from progressing. Would be nice if there was a way to recover the summons or something to prevent that.

18. Apr 2024 · 00:53 UTC
@deruitda That feature will definitely be added in the future, we juste lacked the time to add it for the jam. For now you can use the R key to restart the level, it's not the same we know but that's all we had time for. Thanks for trying the game and for the feedback.

Fun little game! a few small bugs here and there but nothing that impacted my enjoyment. The art style and the mechanics reminded me a bit of The Lost Vikings (one of my favorites!) - lots of potential here for a full featured puzzle game once you polish it up and lengthen the game. There's some potential for speedruns too based on the gameplay

Nicely done guys. I did encounter a few small issues, I couldn't walk left for some reason sometimes. Other than that, cool little entry!

Nice selection of monsters / mechanics. All unique. They look really good too. The bat can be a little buggy. It moves through one side of a wall, then not back through the same wall when it returns. The game could use some more levels to apply the mechanics I learned. Glad you're planning on making a full game from this. It's got a good foundation. Good luck!

I've yet to play your game but...

![Captura de tela 2024-04-22 094425.png](///raw/bdb/1/z/64ad8.png)

... your page says it has an HTML5 version and I can't see one on itch, you may want to either add such version or remove that line (otherwise it will incorrectly appear on the [list of games with HTML5 version](https://ldjam.com/tags/platform/web-html5) )

After playing it... I liked the of summoning different helpers for the platforming (I think it was one of the ideas that crossed my mind before starting my entry). I had some weird issues, like places I couldn't walk or couldn't jump. Also at some point a spider pushed me down the ground and I fell forever, couldn't click on the reset button and had to close the game.

If you're going to keep working on it, I'd recommend balancing the physics so the jumps feel less floaty.

@wendel-scardua Thanks for the heads up. We put the HTML5 link on itch but it does not seem to be playable in the browser. We will take the link out until we can figure it out. Thanks for playing!

Solid concept! I liked the variety of summons and their uses in a platformer. I liked that it was not a typical "use summons to bash other monsters". The art was very clear and communicative, too. I would love to see more levels and some sound and music! Good start!
