Infernal Exorcism by Marju

[raw]
made by Marju for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Play as a priest having to exorcise a haunted house, but beware the portals continue to summon enemies until you purify them with holy light or salt.

Victory awaits after you kill all summoners, who control the portals, however each summoner is immune to damage until all their protectors are dead. start.02.png

UPDATE: We've noticed a weird glitch when playing on Linux systems! When playing on a Linux system, the files can download incorrectly. This should be fixed if you play the Linux version instead of the Windows.

Really fun concept, I like the idea of wandering around a hose clensing it of demons  I think the art was spot on but chould have used some sort of damage indicator to show how much health you have left? Other than that, really good job!

The art & mood are really top notch! I wished that the controls menu mentioned that you could hold space to use the cross, but aside from that, it was really neat! I liked the top-down perspective, and it reminded me of Darkwood quite a bit. Good work!!

I really like the art, and the tone and theming generally reminds me of FAITH. I was impressed by the enemy pathfinding. Whenever I try to set up enemy pathfinding there are innumberable issues with clipping through walls or not finding the player, and I didn't see anything like that. I also really liked how the salt seemed to be placed in ways to prevent the late-game portals from pouring enemies down onto people in the first couple rooms. Left me wanting more - more enemies, more mechanics, more! Which I think is always a hallmark of a good jam game. Strong entry!

Really solid game. I like the salt mechanic a lot, it means I can block off a doorway while I'm clearing out a room and know I have some time to be protected. Artwork is very good too, great job!

Love the art!
I think something that would really help would be some more feedback on your actions, like the enemies getting hit by the players attack.

I like the concept and the mechanic of placing salt to kill the demons! I didn't realize at first that you could carry the salt, as you placed some immediately when picking it up so it just looked like I changed the sprite. I'll also echo what others have said about having more feedback when hurting the demons, especially as they didn't die immediately

The game immerses you well into the atmosphere of mysticism and danger. At first I didn't quite understand that white spots are salt. A great adventure in the world of exorcism!

That's one stylish priest!

Concept is simple and clearly understood. I guess it could've use some indications of doing damage to demons and also salt drops instantly after pick up. Maybe you could add a tiny delay between pick up and drop of salt it would solve the issue?

Otherwise, clean and simple. Nice work. Also it's refreshing to see anti-demon game amidst other entries in this jam! :)

Cool game, I like the idea, visuals and wheezing demons. It's hard to cast away demons when their 'nests' are close to each other. I enjoyed the game, thank you!

Overall I enjoyed this game. Some notes:
- This sort of game could probably use full 360 degree movement with mouse or joystick, sometimes it's a bit tricky to get the right angle for exorcising the demons.
- The exorcism part felt a bit shallow and could require more strategy, otherwise you can almost just walk around with the cross exposed and not get hit. Maybe allowing full 360 movement and narrowing the affected arc would do this, that way you need to focus on a single enemy. Also adding more elaborate ritual for getting rid of the portals would be cool, thought maybe there just wasn't enough time for that :)
- Technical note: the game doesn't work well with different resolutions: on a 4k monitor the initial game window is tiny, and when I maximize it, I can see a much larger area, giving me an unfair advantage.

Great artwork on this one, really enjoyed it. The music was a bit repetivie overall but it really set the hectic spooky vibe none the less. The echoing footsteps are a good touch. I agree with some of the other comments that it would be good to have an indication to how much health I had remaining as I died suddenly the first time playing. Great work though :)

Interesting game. The balancing was done really good, with the automatically spawning salt patches. That way, you were not completely overwhelmed by enemies, even though the were continuously spawning, which made the whole level feel very "alive".
