Breakout by tenshi42

[raw]
made by tenshi42 for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

You have been there for so much time now, it feels like something is going on on this place. You were there for a reason, a hidden skill that only a few people on the planet can handle. The power to communicate to use animals at your will !

We had a lot of expectations on this one, maybe too much. Game is incomplete, missing one level and some animals we did not have time to implement although we have animated all of them.
Animals in this version : Bird, Cat, Gorilla. Expected : Bird, cat, gorilla, mouse, boar, monkey Animations can be a little clunky and some wall on levels too. Conflicts are horrendous to solve.

Enjoy !

Was interesting! Though I found myself laughing summoning hundreds of birds most. XD

Cool art style but I fell through the floor next to the stairs xD

@zio you should try to invoke cats too ! (mouse scroll to change animal to invoke (not in instructions as it is not used for the moment))
@zablas Thanks !

It sucks that you weren't able to finish it. My first playthrough I fell through the floor trying to climb the stairs and I saw that there was a giant outside area with trees and stuff in the game, so I was kinda disappointed on my next playthrough when the game abruptly ended at the elevator.

I love the take on the theme though, very unique idea.

@skleembof Thanks !
We did not have enough time to finish all the connections but assets are ready.

I enjoyed my time with the game, but I ended up going through the map at the stairs near the fire exit, but that's to be expected during game jams

my only complaint is that the music gets very repetitive and I really wanted to cut it off after a bit

Good effort overall, congrats !

This game was fun to play. I think it could make a really interesting game if you decide to fully flesh it out!

I can see this game being very fun when it is fleshed out more. I also fell through the floor at the stairs lol. Would love to see where you take this!

Fun game, I liked the mood, humor, dialogues and music! I liked the concept, I wish I could have used the other animals. And I know you know already but, I fell under the map too at the stairs :D

Wanted to play it, but sadly the mouse cursor was leaving the game. So clicking anything basically made me tab out of it.

I don't know if the problem is on my end, but on the window's version I got an error that says "Failed to load il2cpp

I had a blast playing this game and enjoyed the unique and funny concept, especially the ability to summon animals!

The art style is cool, and the mood and dialogues added a fun touch to the gameplay.

However, I had a hard time playing with the mouse cursor being active all the time.

I see a lot of potential in this game and would love to see it fully fleshed out with more levels / gameplay!

nice job :)

Please can you vote on my game too?

Really had a ton of fun you should be proud! Game play was really enjoyable, with a few polishes here and there it would be steam ready!

Cute dialogue! A shame you didn't have the time to finish the game, but still, nice work!

@pandalk Thanks ! I tried to make a music loop long enough but did not manage to do it fully in less than 1H ^^'
@seanmercer Thanks !
@wuju Thanks !
@master-yeet Thanks ! Dialogs were even beter before we got a Git issue but yeah, we try to make them funny and light.
@coro-yy Sorry for this. I thinks it's an issue with small screen resolution and/or multi screens but it is an issue ^^'
@tamara188 No problem with IL2CPP by my side. Weird !
@d3kryption Thanks ! I will not promise that I will continue the game dev like other years, but as said upper, there is realy nothing between this version and a "more complete" one, at least for a second level with the help of other animals !
@joshua-miller-pio Thanks a lot !
@citsua Thanks !

A bit glitchy. Keeps completely crashing on me after when I follow the bird to the elevator.

The elevator doors open a bit funky too. Was this intended?

I also glitched out of the whole world when I first went to the stairs. Had to fully hard boot the game.

The movement is kinda clunky. I guess it might be kinda intentional as you seem to be in a wheelchair which I only noticed kinda late on my second run to the elevator to see if it will crash again and happened to look down by accident. I guess the bird did hint on it a bit. But gameplay wise it didn't feel great getting stuck on walls and getting through doorways was fiddly. And not being able to strafe to fix those times when you got completely blocked because walking with a too steep angle next to a wall and then had to awkwardly back up and rotate before proceeding.

The mouse leaving the screen was a bit annoying but at least you didn't need to click anywhere though so it didn't mess up completely. But in my opinion, E should be replaced by mouse click (at least as an alternative).

It ran kinda sluggishly. Of course I'm not running it in like the beefiest powerhouse in existence but didn't seem that detailed looking etc that it would cause any issues. Don't think it's just a rendering issue either. When I fell out I saw the outside section with loads of individual objects. Dunno if you have any scripts running on those at all times. A good and easy optimization trick for cases like this is to chop up your world to chunks (like could be each room), have them nested in empty gameobjects or something and then just turn them on/off as needed. That way the extra stuff don't keep running when the player isn't even anywhere near them.

Oh yeah, and needs that classic execute bit turned on to run on a mac...

Yeah I can imagine git conflicts getting outrageous with those unity meta files. For code files it's always easy enough and solvable but who knows with those meta ones. I guess my hint for it is that you should commit small changes and often. As is kinda the usual guideline with git. That way you don't face as big of a risk for conflicts and even if you do, they're easier to solve.

Anyways, good job! 👍 Too bad I wasn't able to play it fully through...

I get that you ran out of time, but I like the core concept and the graphics looks really nice, especially the level assets! Clean and detailed at the same time.

Nice work! I hope you finish it as a post-jam update
