Magic Falls by CaptainSpaceCat

[raw]
made by CaptainSpaceCat for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Oh no! The sacred ruins of Magic Falls are infested with Flesh Hives! It's up to you, a magical eyeball, to summon powerful spells with which to fight or flee your foes. Destroy all of the hives and enemies to win!

Use WASD to move, and the mouse pointer to cast spells. Arrow keys are for selecting your spells, which will need some time to charge up.

This was my first ever Ludum Dare, and was meant to be an entry into the Compo, but alas, I didn't quite have the time to get it functional in 48 hours. I learned a lot from this, so hey, maybe next time!

Fun little top down game. The hit sound is quite shrill I had to turn the volume off. Player moves pretty slowly. I do like the idea of having to charge up your spells and place them. Had a few minutes of fun

Great job! All 3 abilities felt important for surviving, especially the blink. Only suggestion I would make is to lower the volume of the sound effects to make them less overwhelming. Other than that, I enjoyed this quite a lot!

Great game idea - I really like the variable level spell power control, and the time to cast adds a great strategy element to what would be a simple game. Great work!

I really like the charge up and I think it's impressive how cohesive it is for a solo submission!

Interesting idea. Not sure if you're supposed to be unable to exit the starting area once you defeat all the enemies in there. Also, I noticed that you're using the characters that are input from the keyboard rather than physical key locations for controls, which can cause issues for people using layouts other than US qwerty.

@olsonexi Hey! Thank you for the feedback. If you look at the three spells you have available, there's one that gets you out of the starting area, and once you figure out how to use it, that's when the game really starts. You also raise a good point about the key locations; I'll have to update this and use a more generalized input system for future games.

@gold-daniel I appreciate the feedback! You raise a good point about the player movement. The enemies need to move faster than the player for them to be dangerous, but they need to move slowly enough that you can catch them with your spells, so the player ended up being a bit slow. I think maybe something to help would be more variety of enemies that don't rely solely on movement to be dangerous. Both you and @doc-ill make a good point about the sound effects. I didn't think to focus on those in my time crunch panic, but in the future I will try to make mixing the audio a priority!

Thank you to any and all of you who offered feedback! I've learned a lot from this jam about game balance and difficulty, and I'm looking forward to taking things to the next level.

Took me a while to realize that selecting a different spell is not possible at all on my keyboard and that I needed to switch to a QWERTY keyboard... And why do you write that arrow keys are for selecting the spells when it’s not? Also it looks like the Ludum Dare game embedding has some issues, for me the game shows up slightly smaller with scrollbars to see all of it, the fullscreen button works (after scrolling to be able to see it) but then ESC exits fullscreen... You could publish it at itch.io instead, it would work better.

@fractal Yeah, I'll have to change the inputs to be location-based rather than key-based for the next jam. It's also pretty hilarious that I wrote arrow keys, in my sleep-deprived haze I could have sworn I wrote number keys, but alas! And yeah, I didn't even know fullscreen was an option for this, and in the future I won't use esc to end the game, and I'll try and make the game request fullscreen automatically so nobody has to worry about it!

As always, thank you for the feedback!
