Fellwand by Albatross

[raw]
made by Albatross for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

stormpetrel.itch.io/fellwand

A combat platformer. Find magical items and battle your way to the top of the tower while fighting maniac evil wizards whose spells defy understanding.

Forgot to mention! You can dash with left shift, though it uses stamina. You can recover stamina by picking up the green potions. The rest of the controls are on the menu page.

NOTE: I highly recommend using the itch.io download, since I'm having trouble updating the LDJam download. Windowed mode is now the default, since the screen was often partially obscured in fullscreen mode on certain monitors. This and other scaling bugs have been fixed (detailed at the bottom of the post).

Instructions for download: 1. Follow link and download the .zip file 2. Extract the contents of the file 3. Run Fellwand.exe 4. Windows might complain; I'm currently not sure how to get around this. You can click "more info" and "run anyway" however.

Made with Love2D, features hand-made pixel art and an array of custom-made soundtracks. Sorry that it's not playable in browser (that I can tell), I didn't see an option to embed .exe files in the browser. The download is only 9MB though, if that's any compensation.

I'm currently looking into a way to get a macOS download!

Bugs and fixes: - Recently fixed an issue where summoners could collide with their own summons. - Fixed an issue preventing the game from running due to engine problems on some computers. - Fixed a scaling issue causing text to be different size on different monitors. - Fixed another scaling issue causing part of the screen to be obscured on some monitors, by adding an option for windowed mode (thank you to those of you who reported this :) - Fixed an issue preventing music from looping while the window is minimized. - Fixed an issue where certain hints would appear in-game but not on the menu screen. - There is a known bug with anvil hitboxes: they are not in-line with the sprite. I would fix it, but I don't know how :/

Edge-bouncing for jumping is quite original!

I think UI go smaller on a 4K screen and its by default opening in full screen mode.![Screenshot 2024-04-16 104402.png](///raw/867/5/z/6370c.png) I tried to play the game. Jumping vertically I got the hang of it but horizontal movement I think its much slippery. I think its because of the camera that I feel scene is coming down instead of me going up.

Nice game. I made it to the boss and defeated him but didnt know where to go from there. I stayed around long for enough boss to come down adn fight me. I tried to jump up the path he came down but i could not wall jump all the way up. Cool idea with the controls. My fingers started to hurt trying to wall jump after while, maybe it would have been easier with a mouse or gamepad. Good art and sound as well.

Nice! Can definitely see this going somewhere. The enemies are a challenge to beat and the music is nice.

Very difficult to play on high resolution, and there appears to be no option for a windowed mode.

Otherwise, seems promising, and the platforming is clever. Wouldn't mind giving it another shot in windowed mode.

Re. 'Windows complaining' - note that Windows uses 'number of downloads' as one of its heuristics to determine whether a downloaded file is likely to be malware. For a game jam like this, almost all software is going to be recently uploaded and will only have a handful of downloads each. As such, many games are likely to run afoul of this - just click 'More Info > Run Anyway'.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Has anyone beaten the game? (I personally haven't lol). Though I think the way about it is using the portal wand to get in and out of the final boss's lair, and trying to get a one-shot with the anvil

movement is so chaotic, difficult to maneuver

Very cool idea and implementation. Very difficult but not frustrating. Well done!

movement took a while to get the hang of but eventually was satisfying to use. Really like the tips you give in the upper left, really helped in some scenarios lol. Music looping is a little off but very cool and thematic. Great work!

I added windowed mode, and fixed the scaling issues (that I'm aware of). Thank you all for reporting those!

I'm not sure if the LDjam download has updated yet, in that case you can use the itch.io download, which is fully updated.

I actually love how crazy the movement can get in this game, going from platforming normally to realizing you can just bounce from the far left to the far right in order to climb was cool! I also really appreciated the tips that would occasionally appear on the top left! One thing I wish was clearer in the game was understanding when I've been hit and maybe having more chances to get out of the way, rather than the health bar dropping to 0 and the game closing before I've realized what happened

There are two things that can be fixed. First is the resolution scaling, as others have noted. Second is the slippery platform physics. The setting doesn't take place in an icy field, anyway.

Overall, a pretty fun platforming game! It got a little bit confusing sometimes when there were two enemies and me on the screen with all the same player models. When I did a few high-velocity bounces and then slowed down, I had to figure out which one I was. I like the music, but sometimes it would go completely silent for a while which was weird. I really like the controls and bouncing all around. I was having a hard time with the stepping stone part, then I realized that I could just climb up one wall without using any platforms, which is cool.

Thanks everybody so much for the 20 ratings! This was my first game jam, and I've learned a lot and had a good time. I appreciate all of the good feedback :)

Really unique feeling movement, but I want it to be bigger! The combat spaces were so cramped, it was really fun but hard to keep enemies in view to dodge their attacks. The music is also really great, there's so many tracks and they're all quite different from each other, and decently mixed.

Interesting concept, I beat the game by getting to the top and just dropping anvils, so maybe you should not allow to kill enemies that you can`t see, good luck on the jam!

Immediately the game reminded me of a magical fantasy version of Doodle Jump haha.

I love the concept of a vertical platforming/rouge-like, I think it could be an amazing game.

Similar to a lot of the other reviews, the UI scaling was problematic, the controls were cut-off for me on a 1920x1080 fullscreen.

I also think the movement was way too fast and loose for a game with such tight areas. Either slower more precise movement, or a larger play area, would have felt much better I think.

Overall great work though! Keep it up!
