Exorcist Pianist by Aviv Levy
Play Exorcist Pianist in your browser!
A typing game with a musical twist, about beating your inner demons by playing the piano.

Your mind is haunted by demons. They are SUMMONED by your subconsciousness. Fight them with music.
How to Play
- Fight your inner demons by playing the piano. When a demon appears, play the sequence to destroy it.
- You gradually become less sane (red bar below the piano), keep that bar low by destroying demons!
- Survive long enough to beat the game!
- Jam when you win or lose, so you win either way!
Controls
- Numpads 0-9 / Numbers 0-9 to play a sequence.
- You can use A-; instead of numbers, but it's not recommended.
- You can also use a Midi Controller **If it's not working on the web, please download the game.
- Press 'C' to toggle the crt effect.
About
- Art, Programming, Game Design, Logo and SFX by me.
- Game made with Godot 3.5, Pyxel Edit, Aseprite, Audacity and Jummbox.

@willby @darsor Currently the game is about surviving long enough to beat it. I wanted to implement proper scoring but I didn't enough time!
I wish the keys we press made some melody, that'd make the game perfect, but it's very close to perfect the way it is :) (Maybe it does and I'm just bad)
Great job !
Well done!

Some what i was missing is a high score or something to competitive against others :) like how long you had survived.
this might be some kind of notation standard i'm just not used to but both capital and lowercase letters being used in the same pattern really threw me off and most of the mistakes i made playing were from mixing up those pairs (my problem isn't with the patterns themselves, the large intervals are nicely challenging, just with the way the notes are written)
also, something i found really cool and think is something to be played around with more if you ever expand on the game is the way multiple different enemies' note patterns flow into each other if they share notes.

Really appreciate everyone who played and commented! I'll do my best to play your games soon. 😁
I definitely think the game could be a bit more melodic and maybe even have an accompanying backing track. It should probably have a high score feature and maybe more varieties.
@jm2k I wanted to differentiate between a3 and a4 etc, but ended up using capital letters for the higher notes as a workaround because I didn't have enough time to properly implement the number next to the letter without making the number an actual part of the sequence. 😅
It was pretty fun for a couple of minutes and I really liked the atmosphere you made. Wish the note combinations were a bit more melodic and music sounding though! The art is astounding as well!
Great visuals, great vibe, loved it!
LOVE IT!
Still, quite a nice entry!
The core mechanics are good, the only thing I think it lacked was melody. It would have been cool if when killing demons I unconsciously played a melody (maybe that was the intention, I just didn't get it right?). Anyway thanks, I had a good time playing the game!
@themoonrise it was a challenge to mix this game with rhythm tbh. Typing games encourage the fastest action possible and rhythm games well obviously constrain you to a rhythm otherwise they wouldn't be one. But I think this could be something I experiment with in a possible post jam update. There is the easy solution of making each demon appear rhythmically, but it should probably still be balanced with some randomness for the added typing challenge. This is something I would've definitely done if I had more time haha
BTW, the game has three different seeds for the sequences, and there's one that sounds a lot nicer than the other two.
@p-man I actually added a rain background ambience but removed it at the last moment because it was too distracting. So I totally agree. Would love to add an accompanying track in the future too!
@thimmythimble that was the goal, but unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to polish this, as I was coding until the very last moment. IMO there should definitely be more varieties of demons with different sequences
- If other software is using the midi keyboard it won't work.
- It only works on desktop.
I did find the game pretty difficult - I played it through 4 times but couldn't get to the end.
Great job!
Btw, the game randomly selects one of three seeds for the sequences and there's one that sounds a lot nicer and makes more sense. In retrospect I should've removed the other two haha
Thanks for your feedback!
I'm not sure I understand. When "ced" ghost appears, if you do "c", then change your mind and do "d,a", the "ced" sequence that started is cancelled but the "da" is successful. I just tested it to make sure...

Congratulations!
This leads me to think I should probably add (in a post jam update) an indicator of sanity being restored and how much of it. Because larger, tougher demons restore more sanity, so it can be wise to let them sit for a while until you need them.
Everything works so well together! The pixel art looks great, the mechanic is cool. I wonder if this could be used to make something a bit more melodic? But anyway, it’s a really really fun entry!
And having to freestyle to restart the game is like the cherry on top of everything! Great job! :)
Congrats .. It make we want more of it :D
I liked it.
I'm not good at playing piano, my maximum :mute:

Still, solid entry, be proud. Well done! Would love to see more games like this.
Great work and nice idea!
Once again I say nice work !
I'm a pianist and I really like it. The piano key sounds are pretty good. The graphics is also excellent! Also, I would highlight the difficulty curve. It's really good too! Maybe a bit easier than I'd like to, but anyway its' good!
So, it seems like complete polished small game! If you'll want to continue your idea, you can look at speedtyping games. for example you can use all letters for piano too, or make an organ of it. And do the same, but a bit harder and usful for peaople how learn speedtyping.
Thank you for your game! I really enjoyed it!

Very cool game!
Like many others I did feel like it would be really cool if I ended up playing a song instead of random sequences, but this was a great tech demo and really nice art!
Amazing entry
From the audio perspective, I could imagine a more frail and reverby note might add to the creepiness.
Fantastic work.
to the game, the monochrome and low-res art really adds to
that vibe, and the music of course!
I wasn't particularly good, so I never actually beat my inner demons!
Gonna try with the midi controller, later,
All Round, Great Work!
