Ring It On by Conrad Etherton

[raw]
made by Conrad Etherton for Ludum Dare 55 (COMPO)

Ring the bell to summon new challengers into the ring! Fortune favors the bold, as the more times you ring the bell and defeat enemies in a short time, the higher your score multiplier will go.

Warning! Try not to hit the restart button right away (while the screen is still fading in). It's been discovered that this causes an incomplete reset of the game!

Controls

Move: ESDF(offset from WASD, sorry!), Arrow Keys, or Left Stick(gamepad)

Attack: Space, Z, or A(xbox)

Tools used: Godot 4.2.1, BFXR, Bosca Ceoil

I really liked your audio and game design. Hitting the bell and hearing that DONG felt very good to me and I just wanted to clear the enemies and get the hit the bell again. The graphics were kind of minimal but I liked it in a weird way and the audio definitely made up for it. This is for sure one of those games that I want to keep playing even after the game jam.

The audio design is great (which is perfect for a game like this). The dual-use of the main interaction as both an attack and the thing that summons enemies is great! I especially like how it means that you can sort of manipulate the difficulty.

A very well put together game! The game loop was very simple yet addicting to play. I really liked the how I could on in and repeatedly hit the bell if I wanted to be risky or I could stay back and play it safe.

This would definitely be a good game base to expand on if you wanted to put in more time.

Awesome work!

Cool little game, really enjoyed my time with it!
The only thing that screwed with me was that its not wasd movement x.x
Did you have any reason for that?

Love your choice for the disign and sound. Simple but clean and work really well.
Need a few attempt to get the hand on the controls and the timing but really fun (Highest record 370 :sunglasses: )

@thoastbot Sorry about that! I use a weird keyboard where ESDF works better, and I forgot I had it set that way until after the deadline. Arrow keys or controller are also an option if it helps.

Thanks for all the kind words and feedback everyone!

Quite the fun and fast experience with this game. It really gets you into a sort of a rythm and the music accompanies that perfectly. Enjoyed the experience. Would be cool to see some powers or complexity being added with progression.

Oooh, this is a really simple but also really entertaining game. Although it's easy to accidentally ring the bell an additional time, but it probably was intended. I like it!

I got to about 1700 points. Surprisingly fun! Definitely has an addicting game loop. Ringing the bell was really satisfying. I usually start the round by ringing it 3 times then ring it as often as I can after. I like the score multiplier being a bit of a risk reward thing in that regard!

It's a fun concept! The ability to regulate your own difficulty by ringing the bell as many times as you wish is quite unique and interesting. The game is definitely fun to play. There is not much graphics to speak of, but the color scheme is pleasant

I met a bug: my score multiplayer would stay at x1 no matter how many times I rang the bell. Played the web version on Firefox. The issue persists through game restart and even through browser restart.

@fabula-rasa Hmm I haven't seen that issue, even testing on firefox. There should be a line which encircles around the outside of the arena, starting from the top and going further around whenever you defeat an enemy or ring the bell. If that is not showing up or moving, then something is quite wrong. It is intentional for it to go back down over time if you don't hit anything though, so perhaps you are taking a more slow and methodical approach, and never reaching the new multiplier threshold? I'll admit I didn't really explain that system.

Thank you and everyone else for trying the game, rating, and leaving comments, it's great to hear people are having fun with the game!

While it's simple, it's really fun and encourages that risk for more reward.

Nice work, I love how the simple graphics, colors, and sound effects all added to the the atmosphere of the game as well as the gameplay. I'd like to see the bell ringing be tweaked up a bit with maybe a animation for the bell. Otherwise, I thought this was a lovely exploration of a mechanic and theme.

@conrad-etherton Ha! Maybe that's it. Slow and methodical could be used to describe my style of doing anything

I must be really bad at the game when I see other people highscore, as I get quickly submerged by ennemies !
Nice entry, simple and yet addictive !

This is a very nice game! The art is simple, and I really like it! The controls are also very simple, only movement and attack / use button. I don't need a tutorial and I already understand how to play the game, and that's very great!

Really want to play this game again. Great submission! :D

Nice mechanic, but I think this one is somehow too plain to be fun for me. Still good for an arcade game.
