Unstable Elementals by sdelaney

Unstable Elementals is a monster-summoning extravaganza unlike any other. It's a game where strategy meets silliness, and where victory hinges on your ability to unleash controlled chaos. So, hold on tight to your staff and prepare for a cacophony of chaos and calamity!

You have stolen the staff of elemental summoning from the legendary lich king Empedocles! He's not too happy about that. Now you are running for your life from his hordes of minions while you learn how to use your new staff on the fly!

Unfamiliar with the staff and how to use it, the elementals you manage to summon are unstable and violently explode on contact. While not ideal under most circumstances, perhaps you can use this to your advantage and lure the monsters chasing you into them.

3 Difficulties

Finding the game too easy? Try giving Normal or Hard mode a shot. You can even change it mid-game, though we would recommend playing the difficulty from the start.

10 Elementals

Once you've upgraded two of your primary elementals to their max level, you can get an upgrade to combine them into a new kind of elemental. Try to summon every one!

Meet your Elementals

Whirlwind Wendy

Disorient foes with a concussive blast of wind. Skeletons are particularly vulnerable. Air.gif

Drizzle Dan

Douse your enemies, making them weak to lightning damage and resistant to fire damage. Water.gif

Blaze Blane

Set fire to your foes with explosions that leave them burning over time. Explosion causes a chain reaction of explosions when making contact with gas clouds from the nature elemental. Fire.gif

Dwayne

Protect yourself from the hordes of monsters with walls of stone. Earth.gif

Sparky Sam

Zap everything and anything with an orb of high voltage electricity. Lightning.gif

Bloody Mary

Draw blood from your enemies, providing a source to replenish your own health. Blood.gif

Molten Mike

Release a torrent of hot magma, scorching the ground. Magma.gif

Sandstorm Steve

Direct dust devils along paths of destruction. Dust.gif

Brrrnie Sanders

Freeze your foes, slowing their approach. Ice.gif

Compost Conner

Release a cloud of corrosive gas. Mushrooms are unaffected. Nature.gif

This was crazy good! The two things I liked the most
- the MC's run animation, he's like a crazy magician dude summoning the homies like crazy
- the elemental combination. When the game ramps up it's super fun!

The graphics for this are incredible, but I think I would have liked a little more autonomy when it comes to guiding the summons.

Cool game! Reminded me of Vampire Survivors. Really liked the background song and it was a fun game!

Really great honestly. I particularly liked the particles and what I presume is chunk-based procedural loading for the infinite world. The elemental combination is a nice twist on the horde survival genre which I haven't seen before.

I struggled to differentiate what was an enemy and what was my summon in the chaos most of the time, anything that moved I just assumed was an enemy. Fun game, well made

Quite intense and more difficult than I first thought ! Great take on the genre itself, congrats !

Woah, this was really good! Nice animations and graphics!
I wish there were some moments where you can catch your breath, like if the monsters could target your mobs also

Super fun little game. I really dig the whole mixing element combinations, lots of cool directions you could take that. I kind of wish there was a way to heal, though maybe I never unlocked the right element for that.

Love the art. I think this is a decent execution of a survivors-style game. I wish the combination elements didn't reset your levels in the other categories (or were much much more powerful), because it made it really hard to experiment. Suddenly being 8 levels down as the enemies are scaling up meant I never really got to a place where I felt powerful.

@drahmen Thanks for playing! There is only one source of healing in the game, the blood elemental. If you can figure out the combination and build your character towards it, it can pay off if you make it.

This was a really fun submission!

This game had me hooked on its gameplay, very simple to understand yet still managed to be addicting.
Enjoyed trying out the different combinations of elements. the balancing for this game seemed great, I never felt bored by a lack of enemies or that the game was being unfair with too many enemies.

The art style and music also were incredible and paired really well together.

Overall a really polished game well done!

23200 points, nice vampire survivors flip. Was maxing fire+air, lightning + fire late game. What is current score record?

@st00nsa Thanks for playing! That's a pretty good score, I don't know what the record is, though I know some people got to over 40k. Lightning is one of my favorite elementals too, but my strategy is to go straight for blood for its healing. Did you try out the other difficulty settings? If you can survive them long enough, they have higher score multipliers.

Nice game, reminds me of vampire survivors. I kind of got overwhelmed after a few minutes, the summons took too much time to spawn and the enemies spawned too fast, this might have been a me problem maybe I didn't level up enough. But apart from that a really nice and addicting game.

@zklau Thanks for playing the game. Yes Vampire Survivors was an inspiration, I'm glad that we were able to capture it to some extent. The best gameplay tip I can offer is to find a comfortable size circle to kite the enemies around and you'll be able to pick up the XP dropped by ones you've defeated as you come back around

Graphics are nice !
Maybe it could be interesting if you had also spells you can cast yourself not only the one that automatically triggers itself.

Because right now it feels like you just have to run around.
Other then that I liked the overall design particles and monsters.
Nice entry !

I'm keep playing this game, it's very satisfactory! Also I've occasionally figured that's its' not an infinite world, but a looped one! Brilliant!

It is a very unusual and atmospheric game, the visual is quite interesting, it looks stylish and restrained! Good luck with your project, I would have played it more than once!!!

i can't find my victory screenshot :( i had like 17k points and 7 or 8 minutes, i don't remember

nice take on the vampire survivors style, i love the variety of mobs you can summon or fight (they seem to have nice graphics too but sorry i wan't really able to enjoy them since i was fleeing for my life)!

oh and adding different difficulties is a rare but cool feature to see in a jam game!

sprites are nice but they don't necessarily work well together (some have outlines other not, the style from the minion is really different from the summoner…)

but i'll probably come back anyway because i have some combinations i want to test! :D

good job, that's an overall really nice entry!

Your creatures are absolutely adorable! I wish that they were a bit bigger so I could see them!

The background ane enemy art styles did clash a bit with your creatures, but I understand that was just due to time constraints!

Really cool game with great art. I like the range of summon that really had different benefits and the multiple difficulties was a nice touch

Gameplay is really engaging. I forced myself to stop playing to write this. Art style of elementals is both cute and eerie. as mentioned above by another person, they could be a little bigger to shine. Great job!

Solid entry! Enjoyed playing it. Even tried again to unlock a combo elemental. Would maybe have preferred a slightly slower movement speed, because I got stressed out. Also felt like the enemies almost spawned on top of me sometimes. But overall, really nice.
