Trench Warfare by mlists

[raw]
made by mlists for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

image.png A stealth turn based tactics game with both 1 and 2 player modes. Strategically control your soldiers, scouts leaders and artillery to lead them to victory against the AI or use the 2 player hot-seat mode to challenge your friends. Summon reinforcements with the bounty from your defeated foes.

Features: - Bestagons - Fog of war - 1-hit 1-kill - Units need leadership to function - Summon units near your leaders

Run TrenchWarfare.exe to play the game

Controls: - Click on unit to select - Click on unit to toggle between attacking and moving - Click on hex highlight to move/attack - q to deselect unit - enter to end turn

Known bugs: - Units don't grant vision on the last tile with leadership if they move out of it - Cash counter does not update each turn in multiplayer - Win/loss screen requires an extra end turn to appear

Music/SFX are reused from a previous jam as I ran out of time hence the opt out.

I had a good amount of fun. The vision based gameplay was pretty enjoyable and left a lot of room creating some intense moments. I see that the music was reused, but I felt that it added to the experience. I did accidentally commit some friendly fire do to the attack mode turning on automatically after finishing a move when I was intending to move another unit. The AI seemed to be able to snipe me from very long distances which felt a bit unfair at times.

Sorry about the AI snipers! The AI has the same vision mechanics as the player in the first level but they have vision hacks in the second as an easy way of changing difficulty in a jam game. I would have liked to make the AI smart enough to play on a level field but that was not possible in the time constraints.

It's pretty fun, strategy games like this are nice. I couldn't beat the 2nd stage lol. Between the cost of new units and getting sniped constantly, I could never seem to keep up, but maybe I just couldn't find the right strategy. It is a little annoying making a new unit only for them to die before you can use them.

The leader system is interesting and maybe the most intriguing part of this game, but it's also a little frustrating since you NEED to have them marching with your units, which makes it a huge hinderance if they get sniped.

Personally I think I would enjoy it more if units had more than 1 hp, or if sneaking was more viable. But overall it's pretty good, nice job!

Damn the snipers in the second level. Huge props to you, this was a really fun game! I loved the idea of not knowing if you can be seen or not which makes it super fun and strategic. I don't think giving the ai wall hacks is a good idea, the ai is challenging enough without it.

Very interesting game with good robust mechanics, only thing I wish it had was restart for when I screwed up and want to start the map over. But still I'm quite impressed with what you did. Very fun!

Gameplay is definitely cool. I would have liked if you weren't able to shoot your own units. I lost every round to misclicking on my leader or something similar. Beyond some small things like that and the volume resetting to zero randomly the gameplay was pretty interesting. The strategy mechanics are interesting and could easily be expanded on. Good entry!

This was pretty cool! I liked managing the different units and their special abilities.

Some suggestions:
- Would be nice to see the stats of each units (remaining moves, how far it shoots, etc)
- Friendly fire shouldn't be a thing, cause it's very easy to mess it up when actually trying to switch units, and there's no undoing it (I lost once by shooting my last leader :'))
- I'm not entirely sure how leadership works yet. Is it just a fixed range distance, or is there a line of sight logic?
- Unfortunately the music really didn't work for me. It's very dissonant

Still, congrats on the submission! I would love to do a hex based game at some point, but I'm a bit scared of it!

Strategy games are always welcome ! I managed to beat the 2 levels although I friendly-fired some of my units. There is also a bug where I can move on a cell where belong another of my unit, causing both units to bug and can't be selected until the next turn.

Overall a nice entry !
