Aside from a few issues at the start, when I had no upgrades, and the occasional soft-lock leap of faith into the unknown, I quite enjoyed the game and, as others pointed out, I could see myself playing this on my phone.
Additionally, I didn't feel like the music got repetitive, even after a few gruelling segments. It also helped set the mood surprisingly well!
The game also seems to have quite a lot of content, I didn't get to explore quite all of it, so extra points for that!
Small little criticism is the placement of the shop, for me it should also appear on the restart menu as I didnt find it and the help menu in my first iterations of playing. Good job overall!
Well, I saw one month ago on YouTube about "Balls" by Dani and my game is slightly inspired by it.
@jbartelsson, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed playing the game. I think as the first game menu it should send you to the help menu (and I meant to do it, but I didn't have time).
For the visuals:
For me personally, a low res pixel art style with some 8 / 16-bitty sound effects would've fit perfectly.
Also, the Black - Neon Blue contrast is really exhausting for the eyes. I turned off post processing (thanks for including that setting!), but it was still quite intense.
Gameplay wise:
I think the upgrades felt alright, but didn't really make me wanna grind more to see their effects, if you know what I mean. Some more unique unlocks would've been great, like:
- being able to slightly steer the ball after shooting it
- some way to make more money (passive income, higher chance for money to spawn, gain 1 $ per 10 m traveled etc)
Overall a fun experience, good job!
@chrisbeck, thanks for playing my game!
I can see people playing this for quite a while, but there are a couple things that in my opinion need to be changed:
- running out of ammo and just sitting there helpless in the map feels very bad; having some kind of reload would improve things a lot (a special cell, maybe?)
- more types of cells! right now, moving from a cell to the other is very easy most of the time. but what if some of them ***moved***? now you'd need to predict where it will be when you arrive there!
Here is my playtest:

The laser mechanic is very harsh. I died just spawning a few times, or when it happened after a bunch of moves it always felt like I couldn't do anything to counter it, given how quickly it goes off. If it sent a fairly fast moving bolt instead that could feel more fair.
I had some hard time figuring out what things were, the dollar in the cell is pretty self-explanatory, but I sent myself straight into pointy death a few times at the start thinking it was some kind of upgrade.
The art is simple but clear, I played on PC and had no issues with colors, though the subtle glow gradient around the center was a little banded and some subtle use of noise might reduce that effect. The music sets a nice vibe, though I wish it didn't restart the song when you begin a new round and just keeps playing instead.
A very good core idea, I hope you keep working on it!
@mibi88 , I'm glad you discovered the secret! Congratulations!
@steffo , @flaterectomy , thanks for some ideas! I'm thinking of developing this game further for mobile (and then for PC) and you guys have come up with some great ideas! I really appreciate that! Also, @steffo , you can destroy some enemies with a physical contact with the enemy and the ball (if you don't touch the spikes)!
@icxon , I really appreciate that you put some effort in recording my game! I saw that you struggled in killing the enemies (especially the Rays). Maybe I think that I have to reduce the power of the enemies in Easy tier. Also, I saw that you wanted to use the guns, but you didn't have ammo. In a future version I will add a method to gain some ammo in the round. Overall, thank you for playing and the recording!
For this type of game, is easier on mobiles rather than on PC!
Nice work.
