Patient ZER0 by cudabear

[raw]
made by cudabear for LD33 (COMPO)
You wake up in a familiar hospital with no idea how you got there. It's the hospital you work at, so at first everything seems normal but then it becomes apparent that nothing really is. Explore the abandoned town you once called home, figure out what happened, and how you're still alive.

CONTROLS:
- WASD to move
- Q (hold) to check inventory/status
- E (while holding Q) to use a medkit (if currently holding one in inventory)
- Shift (hold) to aim
- Click (while holding Shift) to fire. Reloading happens automatically when your clip is empty.
- Touch glowing spots to investigate them
- Touch doors to enter buildings

POST-COMPO FIXES:
August 23rd:
- Compressed music (25mb down to 2.5mb, wow!)

August 24th:
- Prevented using a medkit that's in slot 2 from removing what's in slot 1
- Shiny spots sometimes didn't disappear

August 27th:
- Can no longer use medkits that don't exist
- fixed a soft-block that occurs when dying during the final fight
- doors with message boxes don't need to be walked into twice to enter
- music now properly resets on death
- Can no longer float offscreen after dying

KNOWN ISSUES:
- Investigating spots on the roof of mansion can potentially kill the game
- Zombies can clip out of bounds

I'm impress by the lot of work.
I have an AZERTY keyboard so i need to switch in order to play the full game.
Actually not sure why i'm the monster, but maybe it's at the end of the story. I'm always impress by people who create a full story during the compo.
I'm not an english speaker, but it's still impressive.

Sooooo much of mood. The graphics, the writing, etc, all convey an epic sense of scale.

But the game... I tried to follow the clues, and couldn't find a diner, or maybe I found it, but can't get through zombies, or whatever, I can't tell. There needs to be a better system of making the player aware of what needs to be done. And the movement speed makes for a terribly tedious time.

At least you don't lose your progress when you die.

Loved the mood the music created, surprised at how you managed to create such a story in a short amount of time. Good job on the whole thing!

This is the creepiest LD entry I've played yet. I haven't reached the end, so I'm not sure why I'm the monster yet either, but it's a great game and I'm impressed.

I finally got the key to the town hall, but for some reason the game hasn't registered this and town hall remains locked. :/

Anyway cool game. The school confused me - the first time I tried to enter it said I needed something to deal with the scream, but when I came back later without any new stuff it let me in.

Game seems laggy in random moments.

Elements of the world seemed very detailed. At the same time the screen missed such basic things as UI showing health and ammo.

Shooting is really weak, You have very detailed chairs but you haven't done animation for player shooting or zombies getting hit. There is strong contrast within game - some graphical elements are awesome while others are disappointing.

The game is strong on mood but I have mixed feeling if being patient zero makes you a monster.

Audio fits well in atmosphere.

Bug: After finding letter I went to roof, I tried to pick up object and my game died.

The game is awesome. It isnt a clone of godzilla, he he. It has a good plot, fantastic music and fx and an excellent atmosphere. The style with pixel art is good, but maybe the rooms are too big and the background is a bit empty. However, you have done a fantastic job ;-)

Interesting story, cool game. I included it in part 24 of my Ludum Dare 33 Compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/fxtKngYPsCg

I really enjoyed your game, the only thing that I think would have made it a little better is distinction between the different types of buildings, just something small like signage through visual or written means so then when on the main town screen you could navigate easier. However you may have wanted to make it harder for the player with the type of game it is :)

I've looked into sources (Action.js) and seen that final text is in mansion. I've got on top on mansion and game freezed after picking up item.
But awesome entry anyway!
