Creature Crusher by BlackCat508

[raw]
made by BlackCat508 for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Mask group (6).png You have been hired to oversee the filtering of defective tiny creatures by crushing any creature that fits the defective criteria before they fall into the pit. Be careful! If you make 3 mistakes, you will be fired (killed) immediately.

How to play-

activate crushers by either pressing their red buttons or their corresponding numbers on the keyboard(1,2,3,4)

If a creature matches any detail on the two cards it is defective and should be crushed. If a creature doesnt match either card it should not be crushed and will fall into the pit

If you crush a creature that doesnt match either card, or let a defective creature fall into the pit, you will get an X

Very engaging and tricky for being so simple. Glad you got to submit. Is there a way to fullscreen? :)

Thanks for playing so early! The lack of full screen might be from my hasty Itch page setup, so that should be fixed later

A really good game, i really liked the sound effects and gameplay loop, albeit sometimes it felt like a jumpscare if i missed a creature.
Overall though I liked it a lot

I actually really enjoy the animations, they're super clean for how short of a timeframe its made! My main feedback would just be accessibility, just because games that rely on seeing specific colors and tiny shapes can be difficult to differentiate. I found the shapes looked all too similar, which may have been the point, but I think giving them something more differentiating would have helped.

This is a great entry, super engaging and simple to get your head around. Nice work and well done finishing the jam!

A little bit of feedback:

I was *not* prepared for the level of focus it takes to keep up with the sped-up 3 track challenge! It's a pretty quick ramp-up, it might be nice to have shorter runs with less of a change in between each (or dynamically speed up as the run goes on).

I didn't realize I could get back to the explanation intertitle from the game at first, but once I did and got the hang of it, I got sucked right in. If you have the time to next time, maybe see if you can tutorialize it a little in-game (e.g. drop right in instead of doing the explanation card, but have little pauses with explanation text in the right moments)?

thanks for playing @camcomduck ! yeah the shapes and colors being similar where kind of intentional, as its meant to make you start panicking, but I could totally see how that could get frustrating for some people. If I had more time I probably would have included better accommodations but unfortunately I was a lot more busy this weekend then I had anticipated.

This game is incredibly addictive and easy to learn! 🎮 I really enjoyed the feeling of "squashing" creatures - it really feels satisfying! 🐛 The sound effects are a great addition to the gameplay and atmosphere. 🎶 Although the difficulty level spiked at times, it added to the fun. Overall, great work, especially in such a short amount of time! 🚀

Fun game, can be challanging, background music would be nice and if creatures had more distinct colors, purple and blue (I guess) was hard to tell apart especially on high speed. But overall entertaing game!

Very nice entry, if I may add a rule variation suggestion, you could look into the rules of the board game [ghost blitz](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/83195/ghost-blitz): in that game you have to get the object that matches both color and shape, but if no object matches both color and shape you have to get the only one that matches neither. Perhaps something similar could be applied to your game, so that you have to think less linearly.

Oh also I almost forgot that in the beginning I was confused because I was expecting number 4 to work on the belt it touches (so the one above it). Later I realized it made more sense the way you made it, but I was a bit confused for the first round.

Ok you need a soundtrack and you have a full game! Perfect learning curve to get to know the game. The wall of text was a bit much in the beginning but I understood it quickly. Without a soundtrack the beginning was a bit boring and I did only play it once because I did not want to start over with only 2 slow lanes. Level select and soundtrack and you can release it on Steam :D

This is really good, a little slow to start with but that's on purpose I'm sure. It look me a minute to realise the 2nd card was a colour. I was wondering why I kept getting strikes. I can see this game developed even further. I really like it!

Great use of the theme, and lots of fun for such a simple mechanic. Cheers!

Awesome concept, it's very similar to the game my team made for the jam, same focus on sorting tiny creatures by color or shape and then smashing them. The ramp up in difficulty is great and the gamefeel is on point, even getting fired is exciting. Great job!

Simple but good. The crush effect screen shake and sound, and the loss effects were very well done and impactful. I cackled the first time I squished one and the little blood splatter appeared. I only wish there was a little music, perhaps a strike-forgiveness per level, and a slow animation for the critters. Cool entry. I want to squish more creatures. Am I a bad person?

One of the best games I´ve tried so far! It´s just excellent. Great level and creature design, fun to play and very addictive. Definitely coming back to this one, congrats on such a good game! Loved it :)

Very cool entry! I wish I could start from the level I fumbled on, the begining feels tedious after the high of later levels. I had trouble discerning colors tbh, some were super similar, at least for me. Otherwise it plays great and I love the idea!
