Foxy Forage by Beelzeboss

[raw]
made by Beelzeboss for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

You're a small fox that can't survive the winter without stashed food.

Move around using WASD

Pick up food using SPACE

Every move is one turn, when the turns reach zero winter comes

After winter food outside the stash grows and becomes a plant, plats spawn food after winter

Stay away from bears

When on a tile with a plant the bears can't see you

Food in the farm area (upper square) is added automatically to the stash

I haven't paticipated in a LD jam for a while. This time I had help from Skatah J for most of the art and ideas. The date of the jam coincided with a work event so most of the game was made on my surface pro 4, which somehow didn't explode, in a hotel room while I was possibly drunk. In the usual fashion time wasn't enough and the readability of the level suffered. Not sure how the HTML version is performance wise, if you have issues you can try the desktop version. While testing the level a fun strategy emerged where you can place food to make a path of bushes for the next summer, it would have been cool to dig into that, but I barely had time to get the game working, will probably try to make a game with that focus :).

Really cute puzzle game! I think this needs some time to master as a player, but the entire vibe is so welcoming that you definitely stick around for a bit. One of the best games I have seen this jam so far :)

This game looks so cozy!! The wind and the leaves are a nice touch. The controls are a bit confusing because of the angle, but overall neat game!!

I was a little confused about the 'required for winter 8' thing, cuz the square fits 4
Otherwise I enjoyed this strategy game

I love this idea! It could maybe do with a super easy level though and checkpoints between rounds for noobs like me hehe

I had quite a bit of fun playing. My 'winning' strategy of covering everything under the sun(or at least in reach) scratched an itch I never knew I had. Unfortunately that run was lost due to my hubris. Far-left bear be warned, my fox-son shall avenge me.

My first playthrough I think I soft-locked myself by leading a bear back to home and then not having enough bushes to hide in to let him retreat. On the next playthrough I was a bit more strategic about using bushes to make sure bears reset (the shockwave effect on the ground when they stomp is really neat!).

I'm curious what the map was like farther away, but felt like I couldn't ever explore that far due to how many moves I was allowed and how much food I needed to bring back. When I got to 8 required I lost. I had 4 plants in the farm but couldn't figure out how to get 4 more food back. Maybe there's more strategy to this than I thought, but even the amount I found was very engaging. Nice job!

Fun game with a cool mechanic. The art reminded me a bit of the mobile games era of crossy road

Really cool game! There's is just a bug when the player try to moves outside of the map, his number of turn left also decreased. But outside of that, the particules are really nice, cool models and it's easy to understand what you have to do.

Its a nice made game but:
1. It is supposed to have some minecraft music in it for awesome atmosphere.
2. Im not sure if its dev problem, but web build is so laggy (like 2 fps rly).
3. When bear steps its a 1-1.5s pause till he ends his animation. Its annoying since the game has some vibe of speedrunning for me and when bear stops me everytime - Im mad at nature for it xD
4. Would be great to improve some enemy AI, like make bears moving themselves randomly with your own moves.
5. Lack of free camera to inspect nearby fields and create a strategy to grab what you need.

Anyways the game idea is well and cool-realized. I like the change of map after winter (also can be changed randomly but with some laws to keep cycle winnable). And also strategicly interesting. I enjoyed playing this one.

Nice game. Took some time to figure out, but I enjoyed it. Levels (if we can say so) are good, stealing food was interesting.

Great atmosphere. I really like how the ground shifts when a bear is near. Once I figured out the mechanics it was very fun to play.

The bears are really fierce! However, I found the controls a bit frustrating when moving in four directions due to the angled camera. I lost several times simply because I got confused about which way to walk and ended up right in the bears' grasp.

Additionally, it’s unclear that the storage only counts fruits in one specific cell. Fruits in the upper cell aren’t counted, and that was confusing.

With a clearer layout and more intuitive controls, the game could be a lot more enjoyable!
