Sorcerer's Tower by MaxDrago

[raw]
made by MaxDrago for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

You are an adventurer who set out to explore an ancient tower where people are disappearing. Having entered the tower, you fall into a trap and lose consciousness. Upon waking up you learn that you have been shrunk and trapped on a miniature island with other adventurers. To save yourself you need to get through dangerous enemies and solve the mystery of how you ended up here.

Features - First-person Dungeon Crawler game with turn- and tile-based movement. - Real-time combat using blades and magic. - RPG elements and character progression. - Ability to hire up to two adventurers into your party to advance through the island. - Secrets and dangerous enemies lurking around every corner.

Update v1.1

  • Added training!
  • Finalized the system of distribution of characteristics, as well as gaining experience for combat.
  • Finalized spells.
  • Added resting places.
  • Added pause menu.
  • Redesigned the interface.
  • Fixed several critical bugs (possibly added new ones... but it's not for sure).
  • Fixed grammatical errors and English translation.
  • Minor fixes that I won't remember. Graphics were not affected, so it's still the same game but with all the mechanics I wanted to see.

Note to the Jam version of the game!

You can improve the skills that affect you character's stats in the game. But I was unable to add the tutorial and the ability to get new skill points in time.

Press Tab to open the stats window. You have 10 points to distribute. There are 3 fully functional stats. - Strength - Increases your damage output. - Dexterity - Increases the speed of the turn bar filling up. - Luck - Gives you a chance to deal additional damage to an enemy. The other two stats are not relevant in this version.

Once you distribute the points, click on the “Distribute” button to apply the changes. Only press Tab after doing that to close the stats window.

---------------—

There will meet a man on your way to the adventurer's camp. You can talk to him by turning towards him and pressing Space. He will tell you a little bit about what is going on.

---------------—

I will release the improved version a little later, but the Jam version still remain downloadable.

Thank you for playing!

The game looks interesting (and impressive for a solo developer). Sadly, I can’t play it since I’m on Linux (and a potato PC ), and it won’t launch. I assume it’s too much hassle to make a Linux version, right?

@yancharkin To be honest, I haven't tried creating builds in Linux. I will try to learn more about how to do that. I wonder if it's difficult myself. :)
However, I do know that my game has been run once on Ubuntu 24.04.1 using Proton 8 and Lutris.

Brave to develop an RPG game for a game jam! I'm glad you took the chance to do it. 😉 I like that you added some story, and the general art style looks good. With a bit more polishing the game could have a unified look. The giant snails are absolutely funny. Congrats for the project!

Nicely made 3d dungeon crawler. It was trivial to beat though.
Ran into a bunch of issues in the jam version but looks like they were all fixed in the update.
Some attack effects would be good, the combat felt a bit lacking.
Works fine for me in Linux using Wine 8.0 (staging) and dxvk.

Love the idea and the mechanics. Sometimes the mouse disappears when trying to click UI elements

I managed to launch the game using DXVK — it's hit and miss on my potato laptop, and more often miss, but in this case, it actually works.

So here is my review:

You made a 3D RPG that is somewhat functional as a solo developer during a weekend jam. It's an achievement in itself. Congratulations! You are crazy (in a good way)! Obviously, the game is rough around the edges but looks promising. For me, the showstopper was the very long attack recharge. The graphics are charming and have an early PC 3D games vibe, which makes it stand apart from retro pixel art or PSX-style graphics. Overall, good job!

Can't believe that it's finished by a solo developer! It's a cute and interesting game, I enjoyed it ;)
