Ant-o-Morph (First ever entry) by Jernskegg

[raw]
made by Jernskegg for Ludum Dare 56 (UNFINISH)

Hello

and thank you for playing my entry in the Ludum Dare game jam!

The game's premise

is about a scientist who, due to an experiment failure, gets shrunk. To return to his normal size, he needs to build an enlarging machine. However, the parts are scattered around his backyard, and because he is now so small, he struggles to survive the dangers.

The scientist manages to capture an ant and attaches a control device to its back, allowing him to ride and control it. With the ant’s help, he can gather some of the machine parts, but not all of them.

To maximize efficiency, he can swap parts between different insects—like their heads, bodies, and backs—to give the ant special abilities.

Unfortunately, I had to throw in the towel and turn this into a showcase instead.

This is my first-ever entry to Ludum Dare. I had a lot to learn, and while I feel the scope was reasonable for the time available, several issues arose that halted development.

The biggest problem was with the terrain. My lack of experience meant I had to recreate it four times before I got the hang of it.

Another issue was enemy pathfinding. I got stuck on this and ran out of time to learn it properly because the terrain work took longer than expected.

All in all, this is a showcase of what I was able to achieve with little to no game development experience.

Features

  • explore the terrain
  • changing insect parts in the morpher
  • picking up chips

How to play

WASD to move around mouse to look around To change parts you can hop on the morpher and a menu will pop up, you can click on Ant head, Ant body, Ant back.

TL-DR

I ran into some issues and had to turn the game into a showcase. I hope you enjoy what I’ve managed to create!

Good first one! I love the style and the little bugs with the device and antenna. Movement is smooth and the idea is good too, i can see where you wanted to go. It lacks sounds to make it feel more alive.

Next jam you'll get the hang for time management a bit better. If you are stuck on something for too long in a jam, just change the scope a bit and make a simpler version of what you are stuck on.

Hope you had fun making this one.
