Crab Game 3: Shell on Earth by crispybacon

[raw]
made by crispybacon for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Due to the laboratory explosion of 2022, the world has been overrun with crabs of various shapes and sizes. These crabs have been going around attacking innocent people and causing mayhem everywhere they go. You are the sole worker of a restaurant called The Pickle Grotto located squarely in the middle of one of humanity's last remaining cities. The Pickle Grotto and the city has just come under attack. Luckily for you not all the crabs that escaped are evil, some even love pickles. Serve those crabs, hire their help, and defend your restaurant from the crab menace.

This game is composed of two phases. Phase one sees you grilling and pickling cucumbers to serve to your crabby customers. By doing so you earn money and points. These points are then used in phase two.ldjam2.png

Phase Two is comprised of a Plants vs Zombies style game, you use the money earned in the first phase to buy towers to defend the restaurant. Take a look at that bar on the top of the screen, thats the crab deck, with your growing points more shelled friends will be unlocked. ldjam1.png

Keep in mind that you must pay attention to both screens while playing as neither will pause while you look away. Have fun and good luck.

Controls:

A = Move to Restaurant

D = Move to Battleground

Leftclick = Interact with Items and Crabs

Mouse movement on both screens.

(if you grab the wrong item while cooking you can left click in empty air to clear your hand)

Cool artstyle and very unusual idea and gameplay. Honestly, I think that gameplay is pretty deep and player needs a lot of time to understand what to do. Good job :cool:

I like the artstyle and the music is cool! clearly inspired by PvZ but it is very cohesive. Nice art on the crabs!

Love cooking games, love plant versus zombies: Combination was fun and hectic! Some orders were a bit difficult to read.

It took me a while to realize what to actually do. I kind of don't like that it doesn't reset after death, however since it is so tedious to maintain the battlefield, it was the only reason I was able to play it a bit longer. A little less enemies in the beginning, so that new player has a time to breath I guess. However it is a cool medley of ganres. The setting is also cool.

The graphics are nice, and the gameplay is intriguing! 🌟 However, the game was a bit hard to understand, and every time I failed, I had to press F5 to restart, which was inconvenient. Also, the icons on the orders could be bigger for better visibility. Despite these issues, it's a great concept overall!

I loved the atmosphere of the game, especially the music, which set a great tone without being intrusive. However, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to pass a jar of pickles, but I was never able to do so. Because of this, I wasn't able to fully explore all parts of the game.

The graphics were also a little hard to read at first, as all the cucumbers visually blended into each other. It would have been helpful if they had clearer color distinctions to make things easier to understand.

Overall, the game has a lot of potential, but a few tweaks could improve the clarity and playability of the game!

Took me a while to realize I could go to the restaurant and make orders. It was pretty difficult to figure out what the orders were, though. I totally missed there was a jar you could also fill with ingredients. Maybe there could have been a way to slowly introduce elements to the player so it was less overwhelming. I also would have loved some audio indicator to know when there was something happening on the other screen I needed to pay attention to. Otherwise, the game over screen kept coming out of nowhere.

...also the crabs were a teensy bit larger than tiny LOL

Cool combination of mechanics! I had fun frantically trying to grill pickles while hoping the crabs aren't dying outside.

i like the idea, but figuring out what to do on the cooking side could be better explained/called out. Also, the UI seems non-responsive at times, I had my cooking screen "stuck" holding a jar i couldn't seem to get rid of and was unable to pick up anything for cooking.

I like the idea of doing a tower defense while also managing a restaurant. I think some of the text in game could be a bit clearer, and it could really do with a cooking tutorial. I had no idea how to use the jar to pickle things. The line reads were quite charming and I like the guys hats
