Carrot Patch by Historymaker118
It's harvest time!
Play as Patch the Rabbit as he tries to collect as many carrots as possible without getting squashed by the farmer's tractor.
Instructions:
Use the arrow keys to move. Collect orange and purple carrots. Avoid grey carrots as these will make Patch ill and mess up your controls for a short time. Avoid being squished by the tractor. Get the highest score possible!

I like the source code as an image! your entry is way less verbose than mine (about 1k lines) it would not fit and would be ugly!
The black carrot mechanic makes the game!
Great job!
I got to 285 score! Love the game! Got this nostalgic theme to it, very cute!
My highest score is 205:

The game is very addictive and great in its current state, but if you're looking for suggestions:
- Maybe you could add some music tune during gameplay (the game starting jingle is nice, something along these lines.
- The tractors wheels would look cooler if animated
- Maybe it would make the game interesting if the grey carrots also gave you points? For example like 2 points? That way, you could try to collect them too, at the risk of being reversed and thus more likely to die. I don't know, maybe this is a silly suggestion, as the game currently works very well (it's brutal with 3 tractors! :))
Congrats for this excellent entry!
When the second tractor came out, it scared the heck out of me! When the third was out, I knew I was soon not long for this world. How could a farmer be so cruel as to harvest the carrots that I'm about to eat?!
I usually love PICO-8 games, and this is no exception. Nice and simple and elegant, looks nice, and pretty fun! My only complaint was moving got a bit painful after a while (too much repeated button pressing), so having a key repeat / auto-move when you held down an arrow would have been nice.
Let it be known. It took FIVE tractors to stop that pesky rabbit...!
Pretty simple idea, but I did notice some clever ways you mixed it up too. The bad carrots that invert controls, the extra tractors... heck, I had the tractors spawning on the left side of the screen too by the 400 mark. Pretty cool.
Good job, really like the retro feeling of this game, it feels finished :D
The Best.
nice game ! I love the retro look and the twists like the carrot that reverses your controller :) nice job !
BTW I think this tiny creature died because of all the food it ate in short time, instead of the trucks :eyes: :D

Great work!
Being partially colourblind, it was very difficult for me to distinguish between purple and grey carrots, which led to some confusion sometimes.
Congratulations on a very polished game!
My biggest problem was that trying to hold down direction keys there was a delay before moving, so I ended up tapping the controls and oh boy is my RSI going to regret playing this game for too long tomorrow.
The game is efficient, it works well and it's fun. I like this kind of games during game jam. It's immediate fun, I have an objective and it plays well. Very good entry, one of my favorite so far.
140 points yea!
It'd be cool to maybe have a heart restoring carrot, once every new difficulty wave - or bonus points for the drunk carrots that reverse the controls - if you survive

But it's pretty cool to make a game in just 12 hours, wow! I think for that amount of time it's pretty cool. It looks complete and has everything it needs, which makes it feel polished. I like the tiny look of the game and the cute bunny/rabbit/hare whoever he is. Graphics are simple but cute <3
P.S. Played again and maybe it's gray carrot doing this? I ate it once and nothing happened. Then ate it and got movement reversed. Or was it a coincidence?
Love the game! Very nostalgic with the art and audio and everything. Great job first COMPO entry!!!

I'm partial to games with rabbits, and yours was simple, but well executed with nice pixel graphics. Congrats!
I think there could be more grey carrots for increased confusion and to balance that maybe a little warning sign that shows the incoming tractor on a lane ahead of time so that you are less likely to fall into playing it safe in the middle of the map.
Great work!

Also, the source code is a mind-blow! :O
Maybe you could add more effects! I liked that one of the carrots confused you, I'm sure the game would benefit from more effects! Speed up/down, extra life, score multiplier, faster trucks... lots of different carrots with many effects!
Also, maybe movement should be even more old-school? As in you move from carrot-position to carrot-position. That would make it quite frantic!
All in all, nice entry :) (oh, lost my last life because I spawned UNDER A TRUCK) XDDD

That said, a few accessibility notes - the shape of the gray carrot should be at least slightly different to aid distinguishing it for those with color blindness. Additionally, there should be some indication that collecting the gray carrot is a negative event - like a sound AND a visual indicator e.g. particle/animation/icon on the player character. The sound, by itself, wouldn't alert deaf players or those playing without sound.
Other than those notes, it was a fun small game!
.
Nice to see another Pico-8 game! :)
It was a fun little game to try. Maybe the intro screen could have displayed the carrots and told that the grey ones make you sick. But then again, maybe discovering it is more fun.
Great little entry!
Good job !
The gray carrot was a bit hard to spot, probably making it a shade lighter would help, but also it depends if you want it to be easily to spot. Also, it is a bit unintuitive, that the tractor takes three vertical spaces, it just looks like it would take two (at least for me).
For future ideas: maybe eating two gray carrots could cancel the effect.
Things like getting hit near the side without warning, and spawning infront of a tractor felt a bit harsh at first, but I came to enjoy that risk management side of it and the resulting carefree flow state that it calls for. Really cute graphics and well put together. I'll come back to this one for sure.
