Colony Clash by stormburpee

[raw]
made by stormburpee for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Colony Clash is what happens when an AutoBattler and a Trading Card Game (think Super Auto Pets and Hearthstone) decide to have a baby… a scrappy, mischievous baby. And yep, you guessed it, this is that baby—but, like, with a few missing teeth. Just a bit rough around the edges, but don’t let that fool you—there's charm in every bug and glitch (pun intended!).

Screenshot 2024-10-08 at 2.03.10 am.png Screenshot 2024-10-08 at 2.04.08 am.png Screenshot 2024-10-08 at 2.04.16 am.png

In Colony Clash, you’re dealt cards each turn, and it’s your job to build the ultimate team of critters and unleash them on the battlefield! Rearrange your team, play your cards wisely, and watch as special abilities trigger epic chain reactions that can either carry you to victory or plunge you into defeat. Take the Queen Ant, for example—she loves boosting her fellow ants whenever she attacks. So, if you’re clever, you’ll craft a strategy around her royal abilities.

And here’s the fun part: Each turn, you’ll have all your mana refunded and gain 3 extra mana, letting you build up to a max of 12. This sweet, sweet mana is the key to deploying your cards (and maybe your enemies’ doom). Don’t worry—every turn, you’ll draw enough cards to keep your hand full at 7, so no shortage of possibilities there!

Oh, and did I mention? This quirky little game was entirely cobbled together in just 72 hours, live on stream (I know, right?!). If you’re curious about the madness, feel free to check us out here: Twitch.tv/ElStormeo. We promise you’ll witness at least some chaos.

Future Plans

But wait, there’s more! We’ve got big plans in the works. Think deck-building, a shiny store where you can unlock packs of awesome new cards, and even multiplayer (because crushing your friends is half the fun). If Colony Clash feels like the kind of chaos you’d love to see more of, let us know! We’d love to keep building it into something truly epic.

So cool man! It's always great to find card games in a JAM. I can imagine this game in the future with other decks and new strategies using the effects of the cards. Really cool!

Beautiful art! Took me few tries to figured out how to stack cards, but once I did, it was quite fun! I love the sounds, it's obvious that they too were made by mouth, like in my case, haha. Well done, nice game!

Very fun game. Though was hard in the beginning, especially since its hard to read what cards do, maybe having a bigger zoom on a card would help. But still ended up playing a few rounds to try and get more wins

This is a really cool card game! 🎮 The graphics look amazing and the sound effects add to the atmosphere. The mechanics of the cards were a bit hard to figure out at first, but once I did, the game was really fun. I wish there was an option to see the details of the cards before playing. Great work for the jam and it will be interesting to see how the project develops! 👏

Nice game! Like that we can try to build combo over more round, I would have liked to see more of that, with maybe the enemies doing the same. The art is nice and fit well, the audio is funny too. Only complain is that it is a bit hard to read the effects on the card (also the full screen and tool tip on placed units did not work for me).

Good game little. Great art. Enjoyed as the game as a board gamer. However it was difficult to know what the powers of the card I was playing being new to the game... If I put someone in line, then I could read the power on mouse-over, but then couldn't retract the card. Also, improved ability to order my attackers. Once I filled up all attackers, then I couldn't move them around at all.

Fun game. I skipped the tutorial then played a few rounds to try out different things. Keeping your living army from round to round is weird, but works pretty well. The music and sound effects are great (ant). I think there might have been a bug with on-death effects not triggering.

I really like the card game idea, it works really well!

I do have a few minor comments, though: it's hard to see the cards, and it would have been nice to have them displayed large on the left-hand side so that you could read them properly! (Especially as the full-screen mode doesn't work itch io :') )
The balancing at the start is perhaps a little odd, on one game I end up with just one enemy, on another with 4, including one with 2 attacks and 4 hearts, which can be very frustrating.

But there's a lot of potential here!

Really fun Super Auto Pets style game!
The sound effects are 10/10 and a lot of content for 1 dev.
Really enjoyed playing it and did not encounter any bugs (besides the odd screen ration when playing in Browser).

Cool! Very similar to Super auto pets! Can't wait to see how the heartstone + super auto pets combo will end up creating something new and fresh to the genre! Would've love to see the carts a bit better, right now they are a bit hard to read and the font was a bit small to! Would be nice for the card to over to the center or come to the foreground :)

The cards were not always playable, and I'm not sure why, maybe I was confused about a mechanic? The art was fresh and the music was energetic, and that helped make this game as charming as it was. Well done!

I loved the vibe and I can't wait to see a multiplayer update to challenge friends! Visuals are fun, sounds effects are working super well to setup the vibe.

UPDATE: I checked your stream replay and I'm a bit curious about the art being so different from saturday afternoon to sunday morning and done off-stream. Did you use AI to generate it, or was it done by someone else?
If it's AI it would be better to be upfront about it.

The game looks great and cute! Making a card battler for jam is a very risky business in my opinion, but you did it, that's so cool. Plus for the art style, sounds and music (which often stuttered, but still made me happy). The minus for me was the fact that I can't see in advance what my opponent will be doing. Mostly in such games it is visible, that's the whole point; then you can prepare properly. In this case, I was just preparing for random events. But maybe that was the idea?

Very high-quality and pleasant graphics. I want to endlessly look at atmospheric backgrounds and cute little characters. It seems to me that you have a great future with such beautiful graphics. There wasn't enough UI, but you didn't have much time. I like the idea of the game, it's simple and fun, it's not boring and I want to play it. The sound effects are funny. I hope you will have cool projects in the future, good luck to you!

A cool game, very much similar to something like an auto battler.
I'm not sure if all the cards were working as intended? After the ant died it was meant to give health? but i don't feel like it ever worked.
Some of the battles felt a bit overly random, i didn't really have much chance to strategize and i would make a build for it to totally fail because of random chance.
Overall though, really nice presentation, the card designs and graphics really came together very nice. The audio was great and with a bit more polish i could picture this being a very fun game.

Pretty cool! It's very hard to see what the cards do before you play them. I'm impressed you managed to make this while streaming! That requires the kind of multi-track brain I simply do not have.

Edit: I hope you added an invisible button over the hyperlink in your menu *simply* to track how many people tried to click it without actually opening the web page.

The music and art is dope. The heart of the cards is flawed. They are not readable when they are in your hand. When you pick them up, the text blurs, so I had no idea what i was doing. For reference on how to display the relevant info well, take a look at Slay The Spire (best card game I've ever played).

Really nice game. Unfortunately it was very difficult to read the text on the cards and fullscreen didn't work for me. I had to learn some of the specials by trial and error. Also, knowing what the opponent will play may give some more strategy around what you want to do or cards you may want to save for later.

Great start! The concept is strong, but I agree with others that it’s tough to see what some of the cards do before you play them. The music and visuals were really well done, though. With a few adjustments to readability, this could become a favorite!

Fun game! Great foundation to an autobattler, looking forward to see what you add to it! Biggest complaint I have after 5 matches is just that the text on the cards is really small, it'd be nice if when you hovered over then, the card would get bigger (kinda like hearthstone)! Great game overall

13. Oct 2024 · 13:21 UTC
The cards are quite difficult to read on the bottom, figuring out the text is near impossible. I also had problems spawning the pets, it seems like there is only a very small area where the card must be dragged to successfully turn into an animal.

Also, joining others here, the graphics partially look very AI-ish

Looks very pretty. Gameplay was engaging, but my favorite part was the voice acting during attacks. Checked your stream out a bit but didn't see where you made the background, just the critters - if you made it I would have loved to watch that. I see some comments about the AI background and start screen, is that true? AI "art" makes me upset so I guess I'm just hopeful its not.

I had fun beating the game. Some parts had a nice polish to it, like the "moving" cards for example.

But unfortunately I also think the graphics are not "self-made". Either you used an AI or premade assets. I actually watched parts of your stream and all big graphic changes happened off-stream (the background and the animals). If someone here asked you about "the visuals weren't made by you", you ignored the message. Why not just say you did it? I have no evidence against you, it just feels overall very fishy regarding the visuals.

In this screenshot of your stream there are assets, which you used for the game like the hearts, crystals and swords. Why are there so many of them, which weren't required like the calender for example? There was not a lot of time, so why making elaborate assets, which won't be in the game?

![Screenshot_Colony Clash.png](///raw/797/53/z/68f44.png)

Then you're LD-title screen, which is also very elaborate doesn't really fit with your In-Game-visuals (the style of your critters are not coherent).
![Colonist Clash.jpg](///raw/797/53/z/68f4e.jpg)

I hope you can put light into this situation, because right now I can't rate your game properly.
