Fearless for Fears by byshla

[raw]
made by byshla for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Hi everyone this is our first Ludum. We made very simple and short game by 3 people(we thought it will be better to make a short game, for you to feel all mechanics of the game in short time :).We are studying game development for 3 WEEKS, so please, don't judge too harshly). The game is top view, but also have the components of platformer (sorry there can be some bugs, cause we didn't have enough time). Hope you will enjoy, so have fun!The game have parts of action and skills!!!prev.png Game guide: -Q - first skill; -E - second skill; -C - third skill; -X - fourth skill; -Space - fifth skill; -Double Shift - sprint; -W - go up; -A - go left; -S - go down; -D - go right; || Have Fun! ||||||| P.S Right now we are working on game, making it better and more playable :) * || *P.P.S: There is a bad optimisation of player’s health(it’s going above 100), but it is the problem of engine - Construct 2. - it literally makes everything what it wants :(

Good job! Obviously it's a bit buggy and what not, but great effort and awesome that you manage to finish a small game! I really liked the animation of the boss and the shooting felt nice!

First of all, it's quite a big scope. I understand that you probably wanted to make the side view part bigger than what it is, but it's probably better to pick one camera angle and try use it through out the game. And if that angle can't do what ever you wanna do justice, maybe it's better to do it with pictures or text. I also think it might have been better to try to limit abilities to just one (or maybe even non and focus on shooting) and make that one feel great, instead of multiple but have no time to polish them.

I think that you shouldn't sleep on sound effects. As a rule of thumb you basically want a sound every time the player does any thing that affects anything. I think a shooting sound would add a lot to the game. Also a sound every time player/enemy takes damage. Even the most generic non matching sound would help to understand what's going on. And make sure to loop the game music :)

This is more of subjective opinion. I don't like game jam games to be very wordy. Usually the game itself won't be engaging enough for me to care about the story, and I think it's more bang for the buck focusing on gameplay. If you write something great and but the game doesn't match I feel like the writing doesn't really matter, and if it's not something great then it's just a delay to get to the game. I'm sure many people disagree with me on this though, so do with that whatever you want.

Anyways, you finished a game! Well done, and I hope you'll join the next one :D

I liked the multiple options for attacks and the boss animation! I was not expecting the platforming level at the end, nice art :)
Congratulation for the finished game and keep up the good work!

I finished it. the bull is trapped at the corner and just shot till die. great concept. the bullet need to be bigger, can't see we're shooting something. at the platformer stage it is for changing skill ya?

I had to laugh a bit at how much you can ignore a ‘go here’ text when you see a blue fire.
I really enjoyed the game, after the music in the intro I was looking forward to some great music in the game, unfortunately there wasn't any. Good job for the first jam, see you next time!

Congratulations on your first Ludum game! It's impressive to see what a team of four can accomplish in just three weeks of studying game development. The blend of top-down view and platformer elements is creative and shows great potential. Don't worry about the bugs; every game has room to grow. I'm sure players will enjoy the action and skill components. Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see what you create next!"

It was a bit too easy to cheese the game and just shoot in the direction the boss is (offscreen) without ever being attacked. I also found that the different scales of pixel art and the other more high resolution objects (menus and the bullets) just didn't seem to fit together; but overall, nice concept and animations.

Wow! Honestly, for your first time participating in Ludum, this is really impressive! I finished the game, and even though it’s short, I had a great time and was left wanting more. I wanted to go through that door and keep playing! I would suggest improving the consistency of the graphics a bit (for example, I noticed some larger and smaller pixels), and when playing on the web, I had to zoom out in my browser. I really enjoyed the intensity of the game, the choice of music, and the pacing—it’s definitely one of the game's strongest points. Congratulations, and I look forward to seeing more games from you. Great game!

Very nicely done! An ambitious first title to replicate some of the mmo/moba behavior, but good job keeping the scope small with the single boss. Had fun, and loved seeing all the art.

Wow another Construct 2 user! I think we're like the only 2 in existence!
I really like the visual effect when clicking the > continue button!
The music was good, albeit quite loud. I like what you were aiming to do here!

I have not yet used Construct 2... O__O! Good job on this! I really liked the mood and the lil' guy fighting against the larger than life boss. =)

THE BEST MOMENT OF THIS GAME IS WHEN YOU THROW A STUN AND THE BOSS DOES A BREAKDANCE AT THE BORDER ANYWAY

Welcome to the LudumDare community
It seems you wanted to use a lot of features of your engine and maybe therefor there wasn't enough time to polish some parts but this is a great way to learn stuff. Look forward to your next Jam, then you already know all this stuff and you can simply use it and build even cooler games
I'm looking forward to see more of you in future Jams

First ludum dare! welcome! Very impressed with your art and implementation of twin stick shooter mechanics, the cooldown abilities were a great addition. The audio could have been... less intense, but it didn't take away from the game.

very nice game and a great start for game jamming! I looks like you wanted to do a bit more than you had time for, and an important thing to take away from this is to cut, cut, cut out features and ideas. This is the hardest part, and I know I never learned i completetly ;-)
Looking forward to see your next Jam game!

The visuals were great—I’m a big fan of pixel art. The variety of attacks was impressive. I had a great time playing. Excellent work!

Cool short game! Loved to see something made with Construct once in a while. The skills and characters looked great, even though it was a bit funny to see the boss rotating all the time

@jeffez, Yes, there are some bugs :(, and the Construct 2 also make sometimes everything what it wants, but, thank you for your feedback!

@renier , thank you a lot for your feedback. Yes the boss movement is bad( , but there is a bad optimisation of enemy AI in our engine, but we will try to fix it in future. :)

For beginners you did a great job! I liked the gameplay and different abilities. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but the heal only worked once for me. Otherwise I really enjoyed this. Nice work!

22. Oct 2024 · 18:58 UTC
@pres2300 , thank you for your opinion! Yes the heal is bad optimised, because our engine is also not so good( It's just a construct of blocks, so it's not so good for this game, because everything with heal and player hp works every other time :) But we are working on it.
