Squirrel Family by CamComDuck

[raw]
made by CamComDuck for Ludum Dare 56 (COMPO)

Summary

  • 2D Survival Horror
  • Play as a squirrel being hunted by an owl. Keep your family alive to win!

Instructions

  1. Dodge the hunting Owl
  2. Move Fish from the dirty pond to the clean pond
  3. Return Snake to its favorite rock - Snake will bite you if you hold it for too long!
  4. Keep Rabbit safe in any tree - Rabbit will escape the tree if left alone for too long!

Controls

  • WASD or ARROWS to move and jump
  • SPACE to interact with animals and trees

Background

This is my first time submitting to Ludum Dare, and only my 3rd game jam I've completed. I had a lot of fun working on this theme, and I was especially excited because it was my favorite theme I saw across the theme voting days. I streamed the entire 48 hour duration on my Twitch, which you can see linked below. I hope to continue making more games in the future for Ludum Dares because I really enjoyed this one!

Tools

  • Godot Engine 4.3
  • Audacity
  • Procreate
  • Paint.net

Fun game! I like the concept I did fail to actually win the game though lol Nice graphics and good job making your own sounds

It's too hard to dodge the owl, so i couldn't beat the game. I liked the sound design

This is pretty fun, but the only things that were annoying was that you don't know when the owl might come down, and the rabbit keeps moving around and blocking the way even after I placed it onto a tree!

GG on first LD! Art is cute. Sound effects are everything I want in a jam game. My general nitpicks are due to the limited time frame you probably already know about, hit boxes are unforgiving (It's nice to give the player some wiggle room to make things seem close but still survive as opposed to seeing a big gap and still dying), an audio queue to go along with the owls decent could be useful as it both adds stress and gives the player feedback as to what's going on. I really struggled with spacebar as the action key, I kept trying to jump with it. Adding key bindings for arrow keys along with WASD is always a nice touch for left handers and is usually just a quick add on. I did have to restart several times due to ponds being underground. Good job with button feedback and in game tutorial info, two things often left undone on jam games.

It's super cute and totally on-theme! A really solid effort for your first LD, though I did run into a bug where the fish ponds showed up at the bottom of the screen and I couldn't save the little guy!

Cool, but I would add more dynamics to the game))

@dingbat @plasmapuffs @xsil Sorry the game was a bit too difficult - the owl and rabbit are supposed to be challenging and "scary", but I may have leaned too hard into the annoying rather the scary. Thanks for playing and leaving feedback, and I hope you enjoyed it!

@thebooksnail thanks for finding me on here too and leaving super nice feedback! I really wish I thought of the idea for a sound effect for when the owl starts hunting, that would have been really helpful. and yeah that darn spawn logic still has the bug for not spawning all the required items...

I remembered for colliders you were either supposed to make them much bigger or much smaller than you think to help with player. unfortunately I remembered wrong and made them too big, so thanks for the reminder on that as well!

This game was a real discovery for me! 🎉 The concept with the owl and the rabbit is very interesting, and I liked its difficulty! 🦉🐇 The graphics are cute, and the sound design is just gorgeous - it gives the game an atmosphere. 🎶 Although sometimes the owl seems too persistent, it only adds interest! 😅 Great job for the first Ludum Dare! 👏

Awaiting a shotgun DLC for taking out that owl...

Simple, well-designed, and well-implemented! The same button being used to interact with trees and creatures was an issue. If those interactions had different buttons, it would have been more enjoyable.

The cute graphics and hilarious sound effects really make this game fun! The owl is tricky, but it adds to the challenge. Gj for your first Ludum Dare!

Very cute but also quite difficult.

I had some troubles with the rabbit: at some point it was on a tree and rotated by 180° and then I could not understand its moves.

Oh, the art is so cute! I love it! Its simplicity has its own charm. Well done!

I still can't get used to the owl.

@nimbushead I tried for too long to bug fix that, but seemingly I didn't think about just separating the buttons... that would have been so much easier, thanks for the idea for next time!

@loig I thought I fixed the rabbit rotating bug, thanks for bringing that to my attention that it isn't fixed quite yet. I'm sorry you encountered that one! I still have no idea what causes it :(

Well done! That darn owl is really persistent, sometimes it feels a bit too unforgiving! Also the random generation is a nice touch, but sometimes it makes it pretty much impossible to bring the snake to the rock in time.. Nice job nonetheless!
