Chirpy's Adventure by DJTequila

[raw]
made by DJTequila for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Bugs have been squashed under society's heel since the dawn of time. Now is the time to rise up! Free the forest's inhabitants from the King Frog and his newly-enlisted fly army. Let your chirping songs guide you on your journey. The fate of every insect is in your hands... err... legs...

Controls

  • WASD - move
  • Space - jump (hold to hover)
  • LClick - red attack
  • RClick - yellow attack
  • LShift - blue attack

I encourage you to try the puzzles on your own first, but here's an explanation if you'd like:

Each door is associated with a set of switches. The current color is shown as a ball on top, and is an average of all of its associated switches. Think of painting. e.g. Yellow + Blue = Green. The door opens when the ball's color matches the door's color.

Nice game :) Pretty hard to control the camera though, maybe I'm just bad, haha!

Best cricket-based game I have ever played! I thoroughly enjoyed the music and overall ambiance. The flies are too hard to fight. I need some sort of attack out the rear.

I think the camera might be messed up in the web build. Once my cursor reaches the edge of the screen I can't turn anymore so I can only see about 180 degrees. I'll save my rating for now and try again later

@nickhellquist @erik-tate I think it's an issue with the web build. As a workaround, hit the escape key and click resume. I'll work on a proper fix soon though

@nickhellquist @erik-tate I added a button to begin the game, and that seems to have fixed the issue. Feel free to give it a try

I clipped through the first try under the little elevating platforms haha just my luck. Cool unique game. I like the mood and it being at night time.

I might need some button prompts to tell me which color attack corresponds to which button... It's a tough battle, but I really love the idea!

Cool game, only complaint I would have that attacking stops your momentum. Thought the animations were good as well

This was a pretty cute game. I should have read the controls a little more carefully before I started, but when I finally realized there were THREE color changes then I got going better haha. The platforming almost reminded me of playing Roblox with my son. I didn't experience camera issues like the user above, but my last run unfortunately ended with a raising/lowering platform coming down on my head and then shoving me under the map when I tried to jump. Also, my life became much easier once I realized I could kill the other baddies (I think I was just missing a lot at first). My main suggestion would be that the center/pivot point of the cricket seems like it's focused around its back/tail section, which seems kind of off. Controlling it might be a bit easier if it's in the center more. Great job!

I really liked the hover/fly mechanic, but it works a bit awkward with attacks... otherwise was cool. Not really sure why the grasshopper has 3 different colored attacks, took me a while to figure out what was going on (my bad too that I hadn't read the instructions beforehand), but overall nice submission. Congrats!

Nice game, sadly I had a problem with mouse not being locked to the game so I couldn't turn the camera properly.

@thereddevil I thought I fixed this, but I just pushed another fix, so hopefully it works now. The windows build also never had this issue.

I like a good puzzle, tried to get past this one for a while but no idea what i was doing wrong :/

The jump mechanic was satisfying!

Nice one, though battle feels kind of clunky and unforgiving in terms of timing. Like the idea, but battle definitely needs some more work.

Love the concept and the jump controls are fun. Nice work.

I can see what you were going for. It's a little hard to aim at enemies and attack them. The pivot point of the cricket somehow feels off. By the time I turned around, it was in a totally different place from where I intended to go. It's got potential!

First of all, cool and unique game! Love the idea.
I agree with the others though, that the fighting is awkward and unforgiving. I kept misjumping, missing hit and thus getting killed. It doesn't help that there are no way to see the hp or to heal (restore health in the end of the puzzle would be nice.
The movement also doesn't feel very comfortable, is to easy to overjump or underjump, so the part with three platforms and the lamp on the third one was painful even without that part when it burried me under terrain. Understandable for a jam, surely.
Also.. you really really should have make the restart button, the page reload is quite painfull.
I stuck with the same door slay a stone mentions, I believe I tried all reasonable combinations of the four lamps... Is it broken or do I do it wrong? I would like to finish it actually, if it possible.

The platforms take you across the map, but the colour scheme is nice.

nice entry to the game jam! attacking stopping momentum made movement feel not very fluid, and I got pushed out of bounds by a lowering platform, lol, but I like the idea for the game with a mix of platforming and puzzle solving. I like where everything was heading, well done

@slay-a-stone That door is linked to three switches. Ignore the switch on the high platform, set the others to blue+red+white. I'd like to tweak the colour mixing though, that door should look light purple instead of light magenta

@vkonstantin @blazerker @heiden-bzr @jonathan-vinesar I agree with the momentum stop and rotation being clunky. Definitely wanted to improve the character controller, but just ran out of time. I'm hoping to release a post-LD version soon. I've been playing around with some improvements that I think feel smoother. I want to do something about the "platform squashing" as well. Thanks for playing!

Nice game, cool mechanic! A bit laggy, had spike lags, and collisions feel a bit clanky. The color thing is really cool, maybe would be cool if taught in-game somehow. And a respawn button would be nice. Anyway a pretty good job nonetheless!
