Survive The Night by Dan Davis
Survive The Night!
It’s 1986, you’re 10 years old; out with your friends on Halloween trick or treating when suddenly you trip and fall into a hole. You awake to find yourself in a strange land.. The Land of Tiny Creatures! Your Halloween Costume, the infamous magical laser sword-wielding hero known as Sam Stardancer thankfully means you’re not totally unarmed because right away you find yourself under attack by aggressive (but cute?) monsters!
In front of you, you notice a large obelisk with words etched on it. “The night is dark, the beasts are many. To make your mark, you’ll need to be savvy. Survive till dawn and you’ll go free, but if you die, you must join me.” -Scary Larry, The Dark Wizard
Will you make it out alive?
Survive The Night is a fast-paced survival game where the objective is to avoid death until the sun rises. The game is a side scroll platform combat style game. The entire game is played on a single, giant level with several types of terrain and obstacles. The player can move throughout the level in any direction available. During gameplay, enemies will spawn from off-screen and the amount and frequency increases over time. The player has 100 health, and each hit from an enemy causes 2 damage, so it is in the player’s best interest to fight to survive!

Also is there a win condition? Wasn't very clear to me...
Once again though, the art and atmosphere are great!
The gameplay, well. The combat doesn't feel very good. Probably just the lack of animation, it could really benefit from damage impact, and also the attack preparation. Also it's too easy to just ignore enemies and runaway, and then you start questioning, what's the actual goal?
The intro says you need to survive the night, but it doesn't look like that is actually a game mechanic. The game clearly needs some goal, whether it is to get somewhere (the goal could be to get out of that place and not die in the process) or, like it was said, to survive some timer. Both would need it to make enemies harder to avoid and funnier to fight.
Background music is nice and doesn't get annoying.
I like the vibe.
Cute lil monsters, just maybe a bit out of overall game style. Maybe making them bigger would work.
It's a great game, I liked playing it
The only thing that was a little annoying was the music, but that's very subjective. And I really missed the impact of the sword strike on the enemies (audio and/or visual).
Desktop version just wouldn't agree with my PC (and crash my graphics driver).
Is there any change of Itch (or similar) upload?
Like other commenters said, it would be nice if there was an effect when hitting an enemy.
I went all out, killing everything in sight. And I ended up dying.
During the next runs, I made sure to hide, and I managed to survive. At least I showed those monsters who's the boss (when I wasn't hiding). It was fun!
@kadokta The highest score? Not for long. It's mine now. That church is definitely a nice place...
