Cardboard Kitty by DylanBrowne

[raw]
made by DylanBrowne for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

Cardboard Kitty is a simple and playful adventure platformer game made by myself and my daughter Alyx (She’s 8). Embark on a cute adventure in a world of cardboard and authentic drawn characters.

Cardboard Kitty was created in Unreal Engine 5.6 (UE5-Main) and makes extensive use of the new MegaLights feature set along with Lumen, Nanite etc.

Alyx Drew all the sprites and designed the quests, I did all the 3D art & logic.

Other Programs used: Houdini, Audacity.

Requires a GPU that supports Shader Model 6

Controls:

Move - A, D

Jump - Space

Interact - E

Menu - M

I opted out of the Audio category as the background music I grabbed from here: https://freesound.org/people/nomiqbomi/sounds/579523/

All other sounds though were recorded by us this weekend.

I'm blown away! It starts, and I'm all... "ha, little cut out cardboard animations, very cute" then suddenly it's incredible moving platforms and beautiful lighting and talking spiders. What an experience!

This is one of the coolest looking games I've seen in a long time. How did you manage to make it so hyperrealistic but also stylized!? Very cool game, I think this has a good chance of getting #1 on graphics!

Wow! This is probably the most beatiful Jam Game I've ever played :D I know its unreal engine but the models and the lighting makes this look sooo good. The Gameplay itself is a simple Platformer but very well executed. Great Job to you and your daughter!

OMG 1.3 GB!

Great idea of making a cardboard theater! A shocking experience to see this in an LD jam.

Lovely little game! I adore the "miniature" look of everything, great use of lighting to create scenic variety in a world made entirely out of cardboard

Really nice art and game design. sadly i wasn't able to enjoy it to full extend beacause for me at least it was rather laggy. But all in all a cool game

I loved this game!
It was so cute & so well made.
The cardboard setting, hand drawn pictures and death sounds were definitely my favorite.
Also, I'm not very good at platformers so saving my spot was a nice touch!
Great job!

Super cute from the drawings to the cardboard world! Almost feels like it was actually made by real cardboard.

I'm thrilled! You are an absolute genius! Applause for the art and level design, and for the unique idea of a cardboard world. I have to show this to my fellow participants. It was my first experience in jam, and I never expected to see such unique projects here. Your game has won my heart! Brilliant work!

Nice and cute, it's cool to see a father and his daughter collaborating for a Ludum Dare entry.
I don't know Unreal Engine and I would like know more about the process to create all the the cardboard decor. Is it prefab or have you created it from photos ?
Keep up the good work to you two ❤️❤️❤️

@patbgames thanks!
The cardboard meshes are all procedural created in Houdini, I spat out a bunch of variations for each shape from there.

Cheers!

Backlit with handdrawn art? This deserves a lot of attention - well done indeed! :)

I collected three webs and after closing the spider quest the camera broke and my kitten got stuck in the right part of the screen. the third sphere could not find, but I was able to jump out of the map into the darkness under the music beautifully. this game very successfully combines simplicity and fascination of all aspects. thank you!
