Getting Bugger by RizeDovah
'Getting Bugger' answers the question: What if Snake was a bullet heaven? The answer: messy carnage. Use your parasitic powers to take over other tiny creatures, puppeting them to help you escape the attic. 'Getting Bugger' is our entry into the 56th Ludum Dare tackling the 'Tiny Creatures' theme.
Content warning, the game contains pixel art gore, spiders, and gory sound effects.

Use WASD to control the game, and your mouse to click through menus.

Reach the correct length to leave the room and progress through the attic.

I think the first thing is that I don't know if there was something wrong with my machine but the game was stuttering a lot and this led to a lot of frustrating deaths I also walked into a spider instantly upon entering the big room quite a few times!
the next issue I ran into was the movement I do not know if it was because I just have adhd or ran into a bug or something but I think something like an input buffer would make everything feel way smoother, I also ran into some interesting movement issues like moving backwards by pressing two movements at once and moving diagonally when pressing more than 2 movement keys at a time(you can even move multiple squares at once)
lastly, this may be an issue with my eyes as I have extreme nearsightedness but it's really really difficult for me to see spiders on the tiles from farther away for me at least the spiders blend right in and I can't really see them until I start painting the floor red with their blood.
I think this game would be awesome on a mobile device and I could totally see playing something like that on the bus or just to fill some time!
The game is pretty fun once you get into the big room, I would have liked if it was quicker to leave the starting room as it is a bit long and less interesting.
The movement feels a bit weird I think the bugs move either too fast or there is not enough inputs buffering.
I don't think that we can predict spider movements? Sometimes I got killed because they moved onto me, but maybe I am just bad.
I would love to have seen this game without the tiling/grid system you used, it makes the movement a bit too jerky , I think smoother movements would benefit this game.
However like I said, I really like the idea of a snake game meets roguelike, where you upgrade your snake with weapons, or in this case the dead bodies of whatever you kill, really cool integration of the theme great job !
@rodney-fan Thank you for the thorough feedback, in terms of the bugs we have noticed on other systems issues like stuttering and not playing the initial animation for the main menu are popping up and are looking at very small potential fixes to these bugs at the moment. Also the floor issue is on me as right before the deadline is saw an issue with the floors and went in and fully remade them and implemented them without much testing or feedback and looking back it is very hard to see. + ↓
@leo-leo On the topic of the input buffer we had talked a lot between us about implementing this but after about 5 hours of struggling during the jam decided we should get back to other things, although I would like to add this, in the spirit of the game jam I don't want to change something too fundamental after the deadline. We also heard that the first room was too long and did shorten it but I think we were stuck between it being too easy or too boring and wanted to find a middle ground but it does feel like we missed slightly and made it all feel too tedious in that first room.
@frogcula I'm glad you like the implementation of the theme and as I am working on a 2 person release for a bullet heaven game at the moment it seemed fitting when the idea of snake but bullet heaven came up. I do think the grid based movement feels limiting too as there would be much more possibility without it, however we really tried to stick to the idea of almost "Snake+" and the grid based movement felt like it had to stay to create that feeling.
@mdsalomon We really appreciate the feedback, and the concise feedback makes it very easy to know how you felt and what we can do to improve. We know the game has flaws but appreciate that you stuck through and experienced the game and seemingly enjoyed it too so thank you !
@sharky3188 Our best guess is that you might have different screen bounds which may have misaligned the placement of the button on the screen without showing it, I'm currently making a fix to this as people seem to agree a game breaking bug is okay to fix after the time as long as you mention that you did. I will send a message when I have and you can feel free to come back and give the game a try, or not if you think this is out of the bounds of the jam which is completely fair too, either way thank you for bringing up this issue so we can hopefully fix it for others!
I found the instant respawn to be good for getting back into the action quickly, but I felt like I was dying a lot more than I expected.
