Daredevil Ant by unloosed

[raw]
made by unloosed for Ludum Dare 56 (COMPO)

Daredevil Ant is a game where you play as a thrill-seeking ant. It is currently raining, and you want to see how close you can get to the raindrops without getting hit!

How to Play:

Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to move your ant and dodge raindrops. Gain points by standing directly underneath raindrops. The closer they are, the faster you will gain points. There is a 60-second timer, so to maximize your score you will have to take risks. Make sure not to get hit, though! You can find the GitHub page here.

As of now, I have some more ideas for what I can add such as movement abilities, but I will be quite busy tomorrow and so they are not likely to be implemented before the end of the game jam. Enjoy!

Changelog: - v1.0.3 - I had to learn how to use the Microsoft New-SelfSignedCertificate and the Windows SDK to sign main.exe since apparently adjusting the collision made my game a virus??? I don't understand anything anymore. - Anyway, try using this in case v1.0.2 gets flagged by Windows Defender - v1.0.2 - Adjusted collision for ant and raindrops - v1.0.1 - Fixed error when closing game! cover_art.png

The colliders/movement speed don't quite feel forgiving enough, so I often found myself dying when I felt like I should have lived. I'm impressed with the BG art & multiple music tracks, but something to spice up the gameplay besides just moving side to side would've been awesome.

I do like the premise of trying to get close to raindrops though; it gives the ant a lot of personality.

Great ant game! It's like playing Chicken with raindrops. The music's pretty neat, as well!

@ember44 I totally agree with you on the collision for the ant being not forgiving enough. Specifically, the ant's collision is a square that protrudes diagonally out from the actual sprite, so you need to start moving sooner than it appears. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to implement more movement options. I was thinking a dash with a cooldown would have been good to reach more raindrops, but oh well...

Anyways, thanks a lot for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed the aesthetic :)

I agree with Ember44 same thing appeared to me. I thought I just should have survived but I died :) So indeed game coudl be a git more foregiving in that sense. Nice game though - the speed of the ant felt good though and the pixel graphics were cute.

It was unsatisfying when you die without being hit. Especially in a game where being close is the objective. With a more precise collision detection, I think this could be a fun little game. :)

Music, SFX and graphics tie well into each other. It may just be me, but the ant feels a bit sluggish. I think the ant would also greatly benefit from a cute walking animation.

I also agree that the colliders could've been more forgiving. The gameplay loop is simple but sweet, and it's a fun game to play.

There is some dissonance between the visuals, the bg looks awesome but it doesn't seem to match the character/raindrops/ui of the game. It's a nice arcade game though. Good job!

@hotaloca @bitluderrb7804fr @conradoclark I have submitted an update to the collision detection. For some reason v1.0.2 (changes to the collision) made the `main.exe` get flagged and prevents you from downloading the `.zip`, so I signed it with the Microsoft SDK and uploaded it as `v1.0.3`. If you're interested in trying out the changes, let me know how it feels!

First of all, congrats on your first LDjam entry! The game is a bit basic but it's complete. The background image and music is very nice. However, if you did not create the art or music you must opt out of these sections for the ratings. I found the background image here on Reddit from a year ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/wallpaper/comments/16e2q3j/enchanting_overgrowth_a_pixel_dream_5120x2880/

# As per the ludum dare rules, you MUST opt-out of the categories where you did not make the assets!

Hey, a fellow Python dev! You did a killer job with the background artwork. It was actually so well done that it was kinda hard to pay attention to the action! Overall a pretty simple game, but it was nice to switch up the expected mechanics by earning more points for playing dangerously.

Good job on finishing your first game!

Nice little twist on getting points from staying under the threat not evading it.

What lovely background art. And great music. Awarding points for thrill-seeking is such a clever game mechanic!

Nice graphics, easy to play. It was funny to try to have better score by tacking risk !

The idea of staying close to raindrops for points is really clever! The art and music work nicely together and create a cool vibe. If the collisions were a bit more forgiving, it’d feel even smoother. Nice job, and the pixel art is lovely!

I really like the core idea of playing "Chicken" to increase your score!

My main bit of feedback would be around the hitboxes - it feels like I will die even if a raindrop isn't quite hitting me some of the time.

The idea of barely dodging the raindrops is a nice new spin! I definitely was way too thrill-seeking, never lasted longer than ten seconds haha. I also join previous comments here, the hitboxes / feedback could be clearer.

This is a really simple but fun game. The risk-taking aspect makes it a lot of fun to try to get as close as possible to getting hit. The ant was a little hard to see on the background, maybe having it in brighter colors or with a border would help. Also some vertical movement might spice things up a little. Really fun and simple concept with lots of polish. Well done.

The game started very suddenly and I immediately game over'd  I agree with some of the other comments in that the hitboxes felt a little harsh, causing a fail if the ant hadn't actually touched the water droplet. I do like the scoring system being based on time spent under the droplets, rather than just a basic 'don't get hit' challenge. Great work!
