Death Harbor by f1tzy

Death Harbor

Deranged, cute tiny creatures have taken the harbor and one seal will clean it out. In a world where turtles explode, octopi carry Glocks, and game developers have way to much fun with the mic. Sealvester Seallone will righten the ship in Death Harbor.

3rd Party Sounds

Our gun shots and only our gunshot sounds came from Ben Jaszczak from https://opengameart.org/content/the-free-firearm-sound-library as a CC0 asset. Thanks Ben for the great FX library.

Whats in the Sausage

We created the game in 72 hours using Monogame and Opensource tooling. No prebuilt engine was used and the code is nearly 100% written in the 72 hours. No AI or prebuilt assets where used other than the sounds listed above.

Tools Used:

  • Krita / Paint.net - Images
  • Pencil 2D - Animations
  • VS Code - IDE
  • C# / Monogame - Language and Framework
  • Audacity - Audio
  • Gitea / Git - Source Code Management
  • Sibelius / NotePerformer - Music Composition
  • Microsoft Clip - Video Editing

Thanks

As always thanks to our Family and Friends for sparing us for 72 hours to do what we love. Thanks to the LD community for putting on this event and always being supportive and thank you to anyone who takes the time to play our little jam game. We truly so hope it bring you some joy.

wild and creative game! Just hilarious voice acting that really brings the experience to life! I love the unique mix of humor and action and the graphics are just perfect for the unusual setting. The controls are smooth making it easy to get into the fun. 💥 You all did an amazing job✨

Great game! It took me a few tries to beat but it was a good level of difficulty that kept me coming back to try again and again. The little bunnies were a bit OP the way they dodge you and it was quite tricky to figure out how to cheese them, but I had a fun time nontheless! Hilarious theme and great music, very good job, super impressive result!

@sviborg We usually go for a more serious tone for our jams but just could not help or self's when we came up with the death harbor concept. We had a few debits on the controls but I think we landed on the right balance. Thanks for the positive feedback and we are really grateful for you taking the time to play.

huge respect for not using any engine, writing the code yourself and using opensource tools!

@david-huculak The bunnies where a really late add, we did not have much time to balance them. Glad you loved the music we had to remove the audio from voting due to the creative commons asset we used so thanks for the shout out on the tunes. Really glad you played and thanks for the feedback.

@aerloth Thanks, we are huge fans doing games from near scratch. Tools like Monogame and Krita are huge boons to us game devs. We try to promote them when we can and use opensource tooling if possible.

@gelst Thanks

@sted I'm really glad people got it and did not just wonder what we were doing. :)

@kaspjej Thank you

@alxje I'm glad you liked the art, it made me wonder at times while putting it together if it would all work

@sviborg Thanks for your kind words, we all worked really hard on this and I think it all came together in a nice way

@david-huculak Those evil bunnies I added at the very end to make it more fun. I am glad you figured out how to out smart the rabbits. Thanks for playing and enjoying the game.

@darefus we do not want to distract him from his work :)

@aerloth We tend to just want the control of it really. Less is more to our team, plus we just like to torture ourselves I think. Thank you.

@kseniya Thank you, glad you liked the visuals. :)

Awesome soundtrack! Though at first I started to wander around the complex because the sights of that many enemies was just too frightening ^^ Maybe it's just me, but the level seem a bit too hard considering that we can only aim every 45 degrees. Or is it just a bug on my machine? Anyway, good entry, respect the hair! :smile:

@tudvari Yeah the firing arch was a design choice. We were not sure if that was the right choice but as with all jams once you make a choice like that you roll with it. The enemy count was high, balance was something we did not have a lot of time to fine tune. I had the same reaction after one of the other devs did a balance pass. Our next jam I hope we have a bit more time for finer tweaks. Thanks for the feedback.

I like the art. It's cute. Very Hambo. The gameplay feels off, especially the shooting. Is it 8 directional? Also there's no feedback when you get hit or a clear indicator of player health.

Thank you everyone for all the comments and feedback! Honestly one of my favorite parts of this event is the constructive feedback. We can't improve if we don't know what we did wrong and what we did right, so every comment about things people loved and things people didn't love is so incredibly appreciated! Y'all are awesome!

The artwork for this is inspired. I mean, that octopus with 8 guns? Brilliant!

Working from scratch, this is impressive! I feel like it's a great start, and with a little bit of polish, this would be even smoother! I definitely don't feel like it is missing any core content, but here are some examples of small improvements:
* A health bar would be a lot easier to keep track of than a number. At least, make the text larger so my eyes don't have to move so far :D
* Being able to shoot radially rather than just in eight directions would make the gameplay a lot more flexible.
* Balancing is always tough. One example is that the rabbits seemed to fire much too quickly. It just became a bit of a chore to sneak in a shot.

I eventually realized that bullets blocked bullets. You could implement a filter to ignore like-objects, but also I appreciated having a way to block the bunny shots XD

Hilarious concept with intuitive fun gameplay and timeless quips. Only thing I would ask for would be a damage indicator when seallone takes hits (also another opportunity for abundant one liners). Luring the turtles to pop off next to the rabbits so they did my dirty work for me!

@hawkin

We really love making these games from scratch and always aim to get a complete moment to moment and full play loop in. We usually make it but sometimes by the skin of our teeth.

The health bar was an early skip for us, one of the cuts we tend to put in the nice to have section of the design. The radial shooting was a debit early on, but once were working we stuck with the eight way. Still world love to see how a smoother set of directions would impact the game, maybe after the jam. The rabbits where a late add so the AI is a little too simple and aggressive.

Blocking the bullets was a bug that we just never removed, when we caught it we just sort of left it in. :) Thanks for playing and leaving really awesome feedback.

This turned out to be a lot of fun! True, it's hindered by too high complexity: turtles have a lot of hp, it's hard to hit mice with this control, there are stops when shooting while moving. Otherwise it turned out to be a really witty and fun game =)

tbh this was so fun the only thing i would change is the shooting to have 360 directions instead of just 8, maybe for the rabbits too, other than that this was a great game!
