Gunpoint Sojourners by llikdowk

[raw]
made by llikdowk for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

With the ukraine war and the palestinian genocide I’ve been thinking a lot about war lately. Now there’s the expansion of the conflict into Lebanon and it doesn’t look like things are going to stop anytime soon.

There is a lot of media out there that covers these events in a completely dehumanising way. It feels normal. The stories are cold. The data is just numbers.

So I’ve crystallized my emotions into this tiny experience. It’s about normal people.

I hope you like it.

«You see the shadow of a hitchhiker ahead. He looks tired. You decide to stop.

You open the door. He looks at the gun you have at the dashboard. He hesitates.

With his tired eyes he tells you he wants to cross the border. He means no harm.

You take him in.»

I made this game on my own in 48h but I used some CC-licensed models & audio. This is the first time I make a game all on my own, that I do it in 48h instead of in 72h and it's the first time I use godot.

Thank you.

Love the music and style. Are there different endings depending on choices?

@krabban thank you so much for playing. There's only one ending so the flavour of the journey will change but it'll always reach the same conclusion.

I played this game before reading your post, and understand you completely. Everything going on right now is devastating, and real people get lost in the chaos. This game made me feel lost and hopeless and stressed and confused. I love that you took the time to present that feeling to us all. Thank you for making this

Played it and only then read the post also. Totally get you and... Feel the game, honestly. Game looks nice, it gets inside and... I feel a bit lost in the end

Thank you for experience

My only complain - put text closer to screen center

@julester thank you for raising the issue and sorry you couldn't play properly :( I've tried it in 5 different machines and that hasn't happen in any of them. I'll let you know if I manage to reproduce/find the issue.

Great music in this, needed a track of the dialogue perhaps as skips could happen at sudden intervals

The best interpretation of the game jam theme

I love the way you interpreted the theme. It's always good to know that there are still people on this world that have compassion for all these bad things that are happening. I liked the music and the aesthetics of the graphics, as well. Very nice job my friend!

It's refreshing see game that due with heavier themes this jam. Also unique interpretation of the theme.

Holy wow. So simple, yet surprisingly impactful! I feel like the way the jam's theme was handled could be viewed as cheeky, but I thought it was brilliant. Well done, bravo.

Theme that you raised and how you match it with a jam theme... No word.

Now about the game. I want to feel more feedback from the decisions that I make (mb sound or smt, not only text).
Atmosphere is great at first look. But when you look at these colors and read the text for a longer time, it starts to get a little annoying.

Anyway 5* by me. Great work.

I think you did well on what you intended on, with the usage of asset and shaders, music, and narrative, and it was really moving.

congratulations on your 1st solo entry and game with godot

I was blown away by the art! It's so beautiful!

I love 1-bit pixel art. Is there a special reason for choosing red?

The story kept me focused and quite tense. Great storytelling!

Even though the gameplay isn't very exciting, it was a good experience.

I like your idea.

Congratulations!

@euler-moises thank you so much for the positive feedback, glad you liked it! Regarding why I used red, it was mainly to increase the visual tension. I wanted something high-contrast that portrayed the internal tension of the characters inside the car against a more calming, darker, uknown colour outside the car that represented the unknowns of the journey ahead. I tried several combinations and red worked great visually with the bugs splatters on the windshield, reinforcing the theme of the constant presence death (so constant that you end up fogetting about it).
thanks!
