A Bug's Maze by Linky439

[raw]
made by Linky439 for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

screen1.png

Find your way through the maze by finding all your insect friends! Switch between creatures to get to the end of the maze and collect the golden cup!

Instructions: screen2.png

Use the "P" key to also pause the game if you need a breather!

To be fair, we found some glitches with the timer mechanic 15 minutes before the deadline, so if you feel like taking your time, know that you can deactivate the timer in the options menu! screen3.png

Made in 72h using libGDX.

Credits - Game by Mad Rain and Linky439, - Music made by Rick Hoppmann, Beau Buckley, Matthew Pablo.

Known issues - Title screen and menus not properly aligning, especially after already playing through the maze once, - Visual tearing on the tileset whenever the game is stretched (fullscreen included).

Nice job on the maze! I thought it was cool how you got new abilities as you progressed through the maze and saved your friends.

The game looks nice and the game play works well. Music fits well. I feel like the ant could have been a bit faster as the pacing felt quite slow for my liking but that might just be me. Good job on the game!

Great maze! The different abilities added a nice factor of making you try to remember where you saw certain things to come back to when those abilities unlocked. I really liked the pixel art for the insects as well - the artwork overall was good, but the insects particularly stood out to me.

this game surprised me. i was not expecting to like it but gave it a try. i was instantly taken back more than 20 years to playing simple, early windows games. like a mini ratatouille moment. whether intentional or not, thank you for the undeniable feeling of nostalgia, which is one of the best things an older gamer like myself can experience

Fun Maze Game!
At first I felt the maze was huge, but makes up for a great challenge.
finding first the rhinobeetle, strider and grass cutter bug.
the spaced out obstacles leading into a dead-end were mean :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Missed an end screen or it didnt showed me one (blank green Background)

Loved the Ant portrait with the little explorer hat!

Fun maze, balanced well mechanically with the different character unlocks. Also, very cute insect portraits!

@kuggenhoffen Thanks! The ant is amongt the fastests of the character, but I see your point, it could get a little faster. Thanks for the feedback!

@firuti Well, we're glad it had this effect on you! ^^

@eric-shaun Yeah, it seems there is an issue with the menu as you are supposed to be taken back to it after completing the maze (an end screen was planned but we were running out of time!)
And yep, some obstacles are a bit mean :D And thanks for the little ant, I do like the hat as well!

@jhax Thanks! I had a great time making the pixel art, it has been some time since I made some portraits so it was good fun.

I liked the game, it is simple and fun. I think I've found a small bug (hehe). I think the order of the bugs is fixed and maybe I got them in a different order, so my main bug rotation was out of order. The bugs were in the found order at the top, but rotating through them followed a different order (1-2-4-3, if I'm not mistaken).

Fun little game, though, I enjoyed it! Keep it up!

I liked this a lot. The maze was pretty difficult, but well thought out - and I felt like I was making progress most of the time.

I only had two issues:
Firstly, the timer felt unnecessary. I'd have happily continued to work my way through for as long as it took to find the solution, but I had the added pressue of knowing that if I took too long to find the next path, I risked having to start again. And that's exactly what happened. I eventually gave up as the timer was running out on my second run through, so I never got to see the end.
Then... Then I read the instructions and realised I could turn the timer off!! Wish I'd seen that earlier.

Second, I felt that moving around corners was a bit too unforgiving. I had to be exactly over the correct tile to initiate a turn, while I wanted to move at speed. I could have done with being able to hold keys diagonally and having it register the turn when a space was available... similar to pacman.

Other than that, this was a solid and enjoyable game. Nicely done.

that was fun! I am really bad with mazes and found myself running out of time, but I did want to keep running it to try and get more of my ant buddies!

I enjoyed the audio and the artwork, and puzzle games like this do really well for siphoning away a lot of time from folks! good work!

Ah, what a lovely little game! I have to say I was rather frustrated with the timer. This would be such a relaxing puzzler without it! The game is rather slow paced, and the maze is large, so losing 3-4+ minutes of progress deep into the maze is not a very fun experience. Nonetheless, the puzzles are very well designed (I especially like that backtracking is necessary), and the characters fit both the puzzle mechanics and the jam theme very well.

Congrats!
