Azulina's Night of Sprites and Fright by ryusui

[raw]
made by ryusui for Ludum Dare 56 (JAM)

A child's bedroom stocked with toys - where better for a flock of wayward magical sprites to gather whimsy to feed off of? Unfortunately for these sprites, they've chosen a bedroom haunted by lurking horrors that come out in the dead of night, and it's only a matter of time before they end up devoured!

The fairy Azulina has managed to track them down, and she aims to rescue them before such a horrible thing happens. However, the sprites are clever, and have found various places to hide from the monsters - and her! She'll have her work cut out for her finding them all and making her escape...especially since the monsters are just as eager to take a bite out of her as well!

Find the sprites, use your magic to stay hidden, and fly as high as you dare to explore the shadowy corners of the bedroom. Watch out for tiny predators lurking on the ground, and the flocks of winged things that claim the ceiling as their domain - a magical being like Azulina is practically immortal, but the injuries they can inflict on her will complicate matters nonetheless! And above all, beware the towering creature that patrols the bedroom - if it spots you, your only option is to run and hide!

Keyboard controls: WASD/arrow keys to move, Space/Z to jump/fly, X/Enter to turn invisible, mouse to move camera.

Gamepad controls: D-pad/left analog stick to move, bottom face button (Nintendo B/PlayStation X/Xbox A) to jump, left face button (Nintendo Y/PlayStation Square/Xbox X) to turn invisible, right analog stick to move camera.

UPDATED 10/12/2024: Version 1.1 is now available with a number of tweaks!

  • The "under the bed" space now has a new visual effect and fixed collisions (plus an additional knockback effect to suggest you are not supposed to go down there!)

  • The sprites' random spawn locations have been adjusted so that a single one will spawn in each vicinity (e.g. you will no longer find two near the entrance, or at the pillow fort)

  • Flight is now accelerated when flying straight upward (watch out for low-flying murder birds!)

  • Flight and invisibility now recharge faster (but have a higher minimum energy requirement)

  • The "shrug" animation when you try to cast a spell but can't now always faces the camera.

  • The game can be paused with ESC on keyboard and Start (Nintendo Start/Playstation Options/Xbox Menu) on gamepad.

UPDATED 10/13/2024: Version 1.1a fixes a bug with the altered sprite randomization (sprites were spawning in the same five locations each run).

Please rate based on the original 1.0 release. Enjoy!

Nice entry ! The game feels nice and smooth. I especially loved the side effect of hustling with the tiny black critters ;) Very nice experience overall, though it is quite difficult. I did not manage to gather the first five sprites.

Creepy bug!

I was still able to move and fly like that, but got stuck under the bed so restarted the game. It was interesting

Impressive amount of work in a weekend! Pretty gruesome health loss consequences, but fitting with the theme. I managed to rescue a couple sprites but died quickly afterwards. In the next games, the sprites were no longer there. Are they intentionally in different spots or was that a bug? Also, I fell into an under the bed area and couldn't get out so I think there might be a collision bug in there somewhere.

Nice atmosphere and neat concepts of having to juggle a couple different powers!

@machwerx The sprite spawns are randomized each playthrough. There are fixed positions where they appear, but which locations they appear at is randomly chosen.

The area under the bed is a known collision issue. It's been fixed and overhauled in 1.1.

Love this one! Good job on the mood, as other reviewers mentioned.

The main issue I encountered while playing was that I seemed to get stuck inside the monster sometimes and the camera would go all crazy with it moving around... but other than that, solid little game :)

Oh my God! I beat this game! At first it was unclear what and where to look, so I just explored the location and died... But, after finding the first one under the pillow I understood what to look for.

not sure what the point of losing half your body is, but good otherwise

@dosmike The idea was to add an element of risk to flying too high for too long. (You might note that you can run faster and jump higher while in that state - didn't want to make a run instantly unwinnable if that happened, just harder!) Also, picking up a sprite restores any damage done, so you're not stuck flightless (or magic-less) if the enemies chomp you.

I liked the scary ambience of the game and the character movement felt good. I was however a bit confused on whenever I was successfully hiding from the monster or not, seemed like it always saw me.

@tete It has two sets of eyes, one up top, one on the bottom! It has a *long* forward visibility "cone" (it's more like a straight line, really), but if its line of sight is blocked, it can't see you. You can also use invisibility magic to avoid being detected, or break line of sight when spotted.

Cool horror atmosphere. Losing my head scared me and was unexpected. In the web version, one fell under the texture next to the bed. And by the end of the game, when all the spirits were collected, it began to freeze. I really liked the models, animations and visual style.

Surprisingly spooky! Still not sure what invisibility is suppose to do, didn't feel like it did anything. Anyways, good job!

Got quite a few jump scares! Was challenging to get them all but I managed eventually. Got stuck in the pillow before I could get to the door though. I like the N64 esthetics and the music made the overall mood really creepy in a good way.

Great atmosphere, spooky vibe! Azulina's design and controls are great. The flight mechanic stood out. Gj!

It gives me big memories of the old Toy Story games on Playstation, both in terms of setting and visuals. The flight mechanic feels nice especially with the timing and distance between obstacles in the room. I feel like the invisibility could use a little more feedback, such as when you first activate it and when the time is about to run out. After aggro'ing the patrolling giant and 'losing it' by hiding, the music continued to play as if I was still being chased, so I couldn't tell if I was safe to exit the hiding place, though that could be a bug. All things considered, a really great entry. Would collect sprites again, nice work!

Very spooky! The cute character and homey furniture made it all the more shocking when my head was bitten off! Well done.

Lots of props on the atmosphere for this, it was appropriately creepy and unsettling (and fit well with the low-poly look of everything). Had a few times I fell into the level geo and got stuck and man is the monster aggressive, wish there was a little more leeway in terms of it noticing you.
