Deep Space Misfortunes by DazyLude

[raw]
made by DazyLude for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

A roguelike strategy game about an adventure through the Hyperspace.

Use your mouse to drag card-like tokens to control the game flow, and press the big CONTINUE button to confirm your choices.

There is no music in this game, nor sounds. For the best experience, however, I recommend putting Space Rangers OST (Fly Theme 12) on repeat while playing it.

You're a space pirate. And you have a cargo of 10 adamantine ingots. And you want to sell them, but not here, here you will get jailed for having contraband adamantine. So, you gather your trusty crew, and set sail through the deep space. Traveling through the ordinary space will take a while, so it would be a good idea to submerge yourself in the waters of the Hyperspace... However, be careful, the deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes!!

Very well thought out events. I thought the game was over as the strip above filled up, but the game kept surprising me. Also the cards seemed too small to me. Thank you for the game!

Nice, clean mechanic, good connection to the theme, well done!

Not sure if it was ever safe to get to depth level 4 or below, for me it was mostly a loop of "go deeper - get broken - resurface - repair - repeat"

Quite a unique idea and very addictive. You always want to know what new event will happen.

Very much liked the idea and the drag-and-drop controls, I haven't figured out everything just yet (I played without the tutorial), but I look forward to giving it another try later!

Yay, i won with a score of 19 at the second try!
I love this game! And I am stunned by how polished it is. Even thought the gameplay has so much depth (:D) its easy to understand and to play! Small details like that you use the drag and drop mechanic to navigate through the UIs work well to make the player understand how to play. I really don't like a lot of text and mostly clicked through it but i still managed to play and have fun! Also i love the Art and general Vibe of the Game!

Reminds me of FTL, I love the graphics!
I loved the fact that you integrated a tutorial part, as a UX designer I find it really cool because it can be super time consuming in a gamejam ! Well done !

Pretty fun and unique strategic "novel" (kinda novel? not sure what category to put it into). Really nice and fun ^^

There sure is a lot of depth(s) to the gameplay :D

Unfortunate that you couldn't include music, it would really add a lot to this type of game I think

BTW the tutorial was very appreciated

Overall very cool game, well done :D

Interesting game! The only thing is that the crew number seems too few for some events even at the second depth level, so I don't really dare getting deeper.

Hi there! wow, interesting and unique game, I really liked the graphics and how the background changed during descent, and the vibe was very great with your music suggestion playing in the background. Overall nice work! :)

This is a really interesting approach to menu navigation. It definitely caught me off guard at first, but once I figured it out, I thought it was a clever touch.
The combination of a text adventure and card mechanics is a cool one. There’s definitely potential here, and with a bit more polish and clarity, it could become something really engaging.
Nice work!

I like the drag and drop controls, feels like a natural way to place people around the ship and it's nice to carry that over to the decision making. The idea of going deeper to take more risk is cool, but the curve felt pretty steep, maybe would be interesting to have a wider range of levels that are survivable at so that it feels lik
e the player has more option about how to play.

There's a great balance of events being unpredictable and taking you by surprise and not feeling like you're being constantly overwhelmed by everything. The sort of choosing your level of hyperspace I think helps a lot with that as it gives you a bit more control over how risky you're willing to be at a given moment. Art's really nice and clean and sci-fi-y as well, brings the whole thing together!

What a cool submission. I love how detailed the systems are, and the risk/reward of going up and down hyperspace levels.

Some feedback:
- I couldn't see the "max HP" of systems which made it hard to know how damaged they were.
- It kept saying "you can't change levels if your bridge is broken" but there was no "bridge" system to fix, so I never figured out how to do that. (Perhaps "navigation" is bridge?) Also "I guess I'll fix it" is misleading since it implies that choosing that option will fix it, but it's really just saying the player should fix ... I think "navigation" but I'm still not sure.
- I don't think there's a way to get more ingots, which means once you've spent your two extra ones you have no way to bribe cops or aliens. That is kind of frustrating, I would expect if there's a resource I can use to bribe that I could obtain more of it somehow.

Still, I managed to win on the first try so it was enjoyable and not too hard.
