Doodley Descent by LarsieVL

The game can look wierd in the viewport since it is a set size. Try the itch.io version: https://larsievl.itch.io/doodley-descent

A game inspired by Doodle Jump, but instead of climbing to the clouds you descend into the depths. Use the arrow keys or A and D to move left and right. Use S or arrow Down to dash downwards. Dashing downwards costs energy (shown by the bar on the left). Dashing through a platform gives 3 extra points. How deep can you descend?

Pretty fun! I can tell there was a substantial amount of playtesting - the character felt great to move, nice and weighty. The color choices were a little strange, although the graphics generally serve the game well. I don't suspect anybody will have a high score greater than 105 or so.

Never knew that flipping the plattformer concept on its head would result in such fun creation; It really fits the theme. As a fellow apprichiator of triangular characters i can relate to the plattforms.

Cute game, it could be a cool mobile game from the gameplay and verticality. I didn't like how you lost charges when hit at first but it's actually a pretty good idea that forces you to be smart about using the dash.

There might have been a bug when I played though, when I hit around 120 points I got hit by a huge wall of lines that I couldn't go through even with all my charges

it never gets any harder, so once you're good enough to survive, it never ends

Nice little game. My personal preference would to have a clearer visual indication built into the energy bar to show when you can no longer dash (e.g change in colouring as levels decrease). I also was able to dash off the bottom, which made seeing the platforms a littttlle more challenging!

Pretty neat little game that I really enjoyed playing and mastering haha! Feels like it would be a very good mobile game to casually play. Great work!

Great music! The game is quite nice, you can feel the control of the character, more dynamics would be nice

Neat little game. Difficulty didn't seem to ramp up, so the lack of challenge became boring after a while. A great entry, well done! <3

Nice game. I enjoyed the concept of a dash bar having an energy cooldown, it was really neat. For a simple game, you found a good balance of being easy enough to play, without it being easy to beat. Good job :)

Character feels good, addictive one more run kind of gameplay, good balance of being challenging yet not too difficult early on.

Great work!

I couldn't fit it into a laptop screen. Your hard-coded resolution is too big

Simple and good fun. Interesting idea that dashing moves you down so you have more leeway before falling off the top of the screen. Player movement is a little slow, sometimes the platforms are difficult to avoid even with quick reactions.

I liked the gentle momentum feeling of sliding left and right. That is well-tuned! Your LD embed isn't working but it worked on itchio!

Feels very relaxing! The mix of the graphics, audio, color palette, the smoothness of the movement... Something about this sweet little game is super chill. I like the main character a lot, it's a cutie! I do agree with the other comments that say that once you get used to the game, it becomes quite easy. With more time, it would've been great to see different types of obstacles, and the difficulty ramp up a bit as you descend. But for a game jam, this is a great achievement!

Great game. Seems simple at first but there is some depth (hehe) in managing your vertical position and taking some hit on purpose to go back up and get some visibility. I was about to say that the difficulty doesn't ramp up but all of a sudden the screen was filled with platform and I died with a high score of 115 lol

Well done !

Nice and simple game! I liked how I had to save my dashes for when you really needed it. If given more time, it would be nice to have some sort of labeling in the game itself about the bar on the left - That you can now dash because there's enough energy. Otherwise, this was a fun short game. Though I died in the end when suddenly the whole screen was littered with obstacles - so I guess that's where it was supposed to end. Great work on your submission!

Very simple gameplay, but immersive. Could work more on the UI and sound effects. But overall solid work for a jam game!

Hey Lars, fun little game you've made.

The controls felt good and I like the visual feedback you get, when you hit an obstacle.

I think it would be great, if the left bar (dash bar) would change its colour, if you are able to make the first dash. Because now it is hard to keep track over the dash ability.

Apart from that the UI was very clear. I like the "starting screen", it was nicely implemented. Greetings from another Lars. ;)

Interesting! The simple graphics and gameplay and the background music reminded me of the kinds of flash games that I spent a lot of time playing as a kid. :)

I think the fact that hitting an obstacle both reduces your jump bar _and_ pushes you backwards makes it a little too punishing, since your jump bar is also what allows you to recover from being pushed backwards. It feels like it's a little easy to get trapped in an unwinnable situation. I wonder if just making the jump bar recover over time and only get used up when you actually jump, might make it feel a little more balanced. Or maybe I'm just bad at the game, who knows, lol.

Overall, I liked it and it's an interesting mechanical idea. Well done!
