Subnet is a minimalist descent game set in a digital underworld. You control a Data Fragment shifting through infinite layers of a corrupted cyberspace, collecting Bits to accelerate your movement and extend your journey.

Each layer grows more unstable, costing more Bits to progress forward, forcing you to choose whether to stay and 'cash in', or keep moving and try to grab more Bits.

Final Score = Bits * Layers Reached

Controls

  • Move: Left Mouse
  • Shift Layers: Right Mouse

This costs an increasing number of Bits every time

Instructions

  • Quickly explore to collect as many Bits as you can.
  • Before time expires, shift down to the next Layer.
  • On each subsequent Layer, the timer is shorter, shifting Layers costs more Bits, and there are less Bits to collect.

Very relax game! Looking from top to bottom through the layers is really gorgeous

I liked the idea of changing layers too! While playing, I kept thinking it would be awesome if it were a rhythm game, where collecting the dots in the right pattern and switching layers at the right time would trigger a cool sound.

It's a pretty and relaxing! It's quick and intuitive, but I personally think this kind of movement goes better with mouse. Nice work!

I liked the balance between collecting more bits and deciding when to shift layers, and the way the trail following the ball looks when switching layers.

Fun game, plays nicely, looks good, easy to pick up. Would be fun to see it developed with upgrades or enemies.

@majomirez You can use mouse too! Glad you liked it though. Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

@platonenko Switching layers already has a rhythmic feel to it so that could be a cool concept! Thanks for playing and for posting your score -- that's solid!

@finlal @thristhart Thank you so much for the feedback!

This was a fun arcade game. I like the push your luck aspect in that you have to pick your quitting time for a high score. I can't help but wonder what other "modes" with powerups and enemies might be like. I get slight Pacman vibes from this.

Also: Eat it JTS! Whoever you are.

@tsaot Thanks for the detailed feedback I really appreciate it! Would love to expand on this with more features and modes, and yes the little pellets in Pacman were definitely an inspiration!

Also: JTS is ME!! Haha. Great score man, looks like I have some work to do!! Thanks for playing so long I really appreciate it. :)

Great game, super cool style and fun mechanic! I really liked being able to see a small preview of the level below you. I think there is a bug or two in your score code, as I was able to collect a single orb on floor 1, let the time run out, then have a score of 49. I tried it a couple more times to see if it was because floors weren't changing when I hit retry, but they were still 49 per. Then when I did another run after, there were an insanely large amount of orbs to pick up on the first like 10 levels, almost like they didn't reset. That allowed me to get an insanely high score. Just figured I'd let you know. Really had fun with this one, super good arcade-style game!

Very nice! I feel like mouse pointer move like this is super underrated, felt really nice to play! The visuals and vibe fit the simple concept nicely and the layer jump effect complements everything.

@t-c Thanks for the kind words TC and for the detailed feedback about the bugs. There is definitely a reset issue happening, but I wasn't aware of the '49' points bug. Thanks so much for pointing that out! Glad you enjoyed, and once again I really appreciate the kind words!

@shp Thank you! Yes the mouse move with a little smoothed camera movement can feel really good. Simple and effective! Glad you enjoyed, thanks for the feedback!!

Top marks for graphics and mood here. Looking at your past entries you have a really clean and wonderfully minimal visual style that works very well for these types of games. Very nice stuff!

Got the hang of it on the third try — but that’s the thrill!!! A unique take on the theme, definitely a super cool project!!! The sound effects are perfectly chosen, but I missed some background music

@designernap I really appreciate you checking out my other work, that means alot, and thanks for the kind words. I do strive for minimalism when I can, it's fun to try to do more with less!

@ammonit Thanks for giving it a few tries to give it a fair chance! I wanted to do something a little weird. Glad you dug the SFX but definitely agree some chill beats would add to the vibe here. I appreciate the feedback very much!!

I like that you implemented the theme into a unique gameplay mechanic that is also really fun. And the game looks amazing for a compo entry, it’s simple, but it has style. Well done!

I got the highscore for this build of the game but someone in these comments got like 62k so I assume the leaderboard resets every time you guys update, either way I'm considering myself the king of this game. We played in on stream and had a great time with it. Love the way it looks and plays, overall very impressive

@holyblackcat Thank you, the parallax layering was really the core idea, glad you dug it!

@she-wrote I really was striving for a minimal style so I appreciate you noticing that. I had a lot of fun experimenting with the layers. Thanks for the kind words!

Gameplay! A timer!! What more could you want right?? haha. I really appreciate you guys playing this on stream on posting the link -- It absolutely made my Ludum Dare. Thank you!!

Was thrilled to watch you guys play this, hear you both talk about and figure out the rules, and then gradually got really good at the game to where you topped the leaderboard. I'm glad the game is reasonably easy to pick up but still fun, that was tricky.

Sorry for the confusion about the leaderboards, there are two versions of the game and thus two leaderboards. You were playing the Post-Compo version and not many people had played that one yet, hence the low number of scores on there.

Also thank you for the very generous ratings man, and the super kind words. Very much appreciated!!!

Very cool Tron-like aesthetic. I don't know what I'm doing or why, but it was very easy to get started, and it's quite fun to play. The online leaderboards are always a nice touch. Very polished, bravo!
