ANGLER
Ludum Dare 57 JAM contribution, theme: Depths
In the depths of the sea, a creature lurks for its prey... Its luminous photophore fishing lure attracts other fish and is just waiting to snap at the right moment.
Increase the luminosity of your lure or let it fade away. Too much light will spook the prey fish and they will swim away. Catch as many fish as you can until the time is up!
How to play
- SPACE to increase the light
ENTER to snap after fish
Round fish are faster and easier to scare, they score 200 points.
Long fish are slower and score 100 points.
Prey fish will first be interested in your lure (?)
- ... then become suspicious (!)
- ... and then flee (!!!)

Behind the scenes
We are a couple from Germany (Team Garnelio) who like to develop computer games at the weekend when the kids are at grandma's house. This is our third Ludum Dare contribution and we spend approx. 2 x 6 hours.
It's a very simple gameplay, the (stationary!) anglerfish can snap and glow. The look and feel of the game is hand-drawn and sketchy, we wanted to achieve a loose and watercolor-like effect. Our test sound made it into the final game - so don't expect any fancy background music, just “Oh!”, “Wargh!” and “Blubb blubb blubb”.

I would like to know how your game background is implemented with shader? It looks cool !
Really cool and refreshing entry!
I like how you gotta smash the Spacebar, but cant just blindly hit in the whole time. You actually have to lure your pray. Graphics are top notch aswell as the animations. I haven't heard any sound effects so I'm wondering if I missed smth.
But other than that kewl little game ^^
Our highscore is 1600 btw (so only one fish more!)
We thought a lot about using this kind of "watercolor" art style - or using a clean comic look and size down all objects, which would allow to add movement and a level design to the game.
I honestly feel very bad that I drew the "idle" animation of our main character with only three sprites or so, whereas I spend a lot more of sprites for the animation of the prey fish. I tried to do justice by animating the "snap" animation of the angler fish with a lavish 12 (?) sprites. XD
Loved the art style and mouth-made SFX :)

Thanks for dropping your link in my stream the other time. finally got around to playing. Liked the sound effects a lot, and the Handdrawn style.
But in this jam, I definately learned that it makes a lot of difference, having sound effects and music, since it sets the mood and rounds up the overall look and feel. We will do our homework next time, and prepare a more professional setup and make more use of it! Thank you for the feedback.
I'm personally not very good at button mashing and it hurts my hand a bit so another input method would've been nice. Just holding the key might've been too easy but then again the main challenge was timing so I think it could work :)
Overall short but sweet, with lots of personality!
It's worth putting more thought into this.
I think “hold key” also fits better for lurking... it doesn't make so much noise :D.
