Echo Diver by cyndereN
Echo Diver
Game Overview
Echo Diver is a minimalist 2D side-scrolling exploration game set in the depths of underwater caverns. Players navigate complete darkness using echolocation pulses that briefly illuminate their surroundings, creating a tense balance between visibility and safety. The objective is to explore as deeply as possible, discover hidden artifacts, and avoid lurking dangers - all while managing limited echolocation resources.
Core Experience
Sense of exploration and tension discovering deeper sea cave
Core Gameplay
Core Gameplay Loop
Pulse: Use echolocation to map the darkness (strategically).
Explore: Discover paths, artifacts, and hidden dangers.
Evade: Avoid creatures attracted by your pulses.
Escape: Find the exit—or push deeper for greater rewards.
Camera & Perspective
- 2D Side-scrolling view with left-to-right up-to-down progression
- Darkness system: 90% of screen is pure black at all times
- Echolocation reveals temporary silhouettes of environment
Movement & Controls
Simple directional controls (WASD/Arrow keys or joystick).Space to release echo.
Movement is intentionally slow, emphasizing caution and exploration.
Players drift slightly due to water currents, requiring gentle corrections.
Mechanics
Dynamic Cave System
- Different depth zones with distinct challenges:
- Shallows (wide passages, few threats)
- Mid-depths (narrow tunnels, basic predators (slower, follows player))
- Abyss (maze-like, advanced AI behaviors (eels, Chase after multiple pulses, hide in caves))
- Depths + 1 when level uped
Echolocation Strategy
- Pulse energy meter (recharges slowly)
- Environmental feedback:
- Hard surfaces return clean echoes (show edge and danger)
- Voids return no echo (potential paths or pits)
Risk/Reward Systems
Artifact Collection
- Ancient relics (Branching Path Rewards)
BlackSheepWall
- Glow faintly in darkness, will react to echo - shoot a larger once that would light the map.
Creature AI (Always showing the hostile fish?)
| Type | Behavior | Feature |
|----------|-------------|----------------|
| Passive Fish | Swim in predictable patterns | Can be used as "landmarks" |
| Curious Jellyfish (Could be integrated with Passive FIsh?) | Follow pulses but don’t attack | Distract predators |
| Slow Triggerfish | Slowly Chase all the time (once met?) | Patrolling |
| Aggressive Eels(TBD) | Chase after pulse, fast but periodically | Hide in narrow caves |
Traps
- Slow the player
Can be a way to eleminate enemy
Hot water (boils fish but allows diver through)
- Collapsing Tunnel (Collapse after pulses)
- Tangleweed (kill both)
Visual & Audio Design
Art Style
- High-contrast silhouettes during pulses
- Minimalist UI with only essential information
- Bio-luminescent accents on creatures/artifacts
Sound Design
- Directional audio cues for threats/rewards
- Echo simulation (pitch shifts based on distance)
- Creature vocalizations warn of nearby danger
Note
Due to time limit this is only a demo. Complete game would contain multiple levels, and more mechanics.

Reminds me of duskers for some reason.
I got killed a couple times, then like others just found an endless void where I sank for a few minutes straight before giving up. It has a lot of potential though, good job!
